You may be related to me.  My G Grandmother was a Nicol but her mother was Isabella Shand b in 1850's.  This grandmother married a Herd/Hird.  Both he & my g. grnadmother came to Canada.  Isobella died young & her husband a Nicol remasrried but she did have 4 children.  As her father - a Joseph Shand - was put in a Poor Home - feel the family left the area.  The father was aged & apparently had a stroke.  Could this be your family??
