Still trying to figure out Marshall heritage.

I am trying to figure out who my William Marshall is.  I know he was born around 1817 or so. Some sources say PA, some say KY and some say Germany. All I do know is I find no records of a William I can confirm to be my William. He married Ann Botts in 1856 and all records I find for her and her son David are 1870 and beyond and none of them mention William. She is always listed as "widow of William". He has one son I know of, David C Marshall whose death certificate is how I finally confirmed that his father's name was for sure William. I have been told he owned a plantation in KY and a hotel in KY, but do not find anything to prove any of this. Any help is appreciated. I have found tax records for a William that owned a hotel in Louisville, KY in 1863-1865, but do not have an address or any other information.

I am contacting you from Newfoundland Canada. My great great grandmother was Mahala Marshall who married my gg grandfather S Tulk in 1855. She had a brother David. The name Marshall appears in Newfoundland in the mid 1700's. There was a William born here in 1821. There was a Thomas who moved to the US and had a son William die in Boston in 1832 at age 10. Thomas wife was named Selina. It was not uncommon for many families to move from Newfoundland to the US in the 1800's. Google the following site Newfoundland Grand Banks Genelogy and type Marshall in the search page. It may give you some potential leads..... Other common Marshall names here is George, Philip, Elizabeth, Mary, Ameila, Amy, etc. Good Luck,

Thank you.  I am ready to check anything out at this point. This doesn't fit with any facts I have ever been told, but then again, I have already disproved a few things I was told growing up.  Thanks again. I will check this out.
