Christmas took a bad turn

We were about to sit down to the fancy dinner I made for just the two of us, since we don't have family nearby enough to be with today when the phone rang.  The most terrible news imaginable - my second cousin, Dick, died today.

I have no siblings and on my father's side all I ever had was father, his bachelor brother, and their mother - none alive now.  That is, until Dick wrote to me 14 months ago when he found his mother's profile on WikiTree.  We bonded - maybe 2nd cousin doesn't sound all that close, but we grew very close very fast.  Even though we're 2,500 miles apart, we've visited twice since then and, of course, have been in constant contact by email and phone.  I'm devastated now.

I am so sorry Gaile, that is just awful. My heart goes out to you.  But try to remember that the memories you were able to make, and exchanges made back and forth those months will never be lost.

I am so glad you have those to fall back on, even though there will be a terrible void in your life with his absence. Hang in there Gaile. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of grief.

I am so sorry and sad to hear your news Gaile. I know  how hard it is to lose a loved one at Christmas.

Please try hard to celebrate his life and the interaction you had with him, and try hard not to dwell on his absence. The short time you spent with him was obviously special, and I believe those memories will ease you pain if you let them.

Second cousin sounds close enough to me, Gaile. One of my favorite genealogical "pals" is a second cousin in Southern California. She sent pictures to me of family members as young'uns. So sorry for your irreparable  loss, Gaile.

I'm so sorry for your loss, at this time of year can seem so much more heartbreaking to lose those you love, and yes you may have been second cousins but family is family and sometimes you just find that instant bond with them. My second cousins are some of my most precious/closest relatives and I feel for your loss. My thoughts are with you and yours. I'm so glad you found each other and shared what you had.

Hi Gail, I just posted on Dick's profile.  What an awesome man, and his achievements, WOW!!

Thank you for keeping his memory alive here on WikiTree. It truly is a great tribute to Dick and we couldn't ask for a better profile to represent his life. His family and loved ones have a lot to be proud of!  My thoughts and prayers go out to you and everyone who will be affected by Dick's passing.
