You can ask to be added to the trusted list. You would then be able to see it on your watchlist.

Umm, that's the purpose of a watchlist, it's a list of the profiles and free space pages that you manage. If you are looking to find the profiles of your ancestors you can do that from the Family Tree & Tools tab on your profile.

For a profile to be on your watchlist, you do have to be on the Trusted List. Some of us have ancestors whose profiles aren't on our watchlists, and (as Lynda indicates) getting added to the Trusted List requires making a Trusted List request (and getting a response from the profile manager).

It is frustrating.  Usually my trusted list requests for my ancestors are approved, but not when all the PMs are inactive, or when the PM tells me I don't "need" to be on the trusted list to edit an open profile.

If the profile is open, why do I "need" the approval of anybody to get notified of edits to it in a feed?

Edits to open profiles should be available as a feed on an opt-in basis regardless of a PM's "approval", for purposes of fostering real-time collaboration between researchers with similar interests.

Some profile managers don’t understand that in order to watch a profile you need to be on the TL. (Something I didn’t understand in my early days here.) So I always include that in my TL request.
