Looking for ancestry of John Anderson Coats born in AL in 1820.

John Anderson Coats, born in AL around 1820, living in Sullivan County, TN at time of 1850 census, in Hawkins County, TN in 1870 and died in Hawkins County, TN in 1891.  In 1841 he married Susanna Carroll in Sullivan County.  They had 6 children, William, Mary Amanda, Sarah Ann, John Anderson, Nathan B., and Marcus Lafayette.  According to Ancestry.com, John served in the Union Army during the Civil War from Hawkins County. I have been unable to find any prior ancestors.  He may have come from a group of Coats (later Coates) that were Quakers who moved from Newberry, SC to AL.  Any help would be appreciated.

Do you know the county or city in Alabama where he was born? There was a John Anderson Coats born in 1877 who registered for the draft 1917-1918 in Sullivan Co., TN. Would he have been a grandson?

Thanks for the info.  The John Anderson Coats that registered for the draft in WW1 was very likely my Great, Great Grandfather's grandson.  He was likely John Anderson Coats, Junior's son.  I had not followed any of the original John Anderson Coats' siblings or their families.  Based on some other research of the Quakers, I am guessing that the original John Anderson Coats was from Clark County, AL.  I do not know if that was where he was born.  I have not determined any connection to his parents or other family members in AL although there were several Coats families in south AL around the early to mid 1800's.

Marcus Lafayette Coates 1859- 1933 married a Sarah Catherine Gregg -1858-1928;

I could not find or locate John Anderson Coats parents; however on the genealogies in FamilySearch.org it did list her parents. And they are; Sterlin Carroll -1805-1881 Wife; Elizabeth R. Moore -b.1811- 1850 . They had 11 children which I won't name here, but if you need help then please let me know. I will go back and get them for you.

This is all I have for you so I do hope it helps. If you need more help then please let me know.   Nancy
