Is there a standard glossary of abbreviations?

Just about all of the documents that I have in my posession that relate to genealogy have a set of abbreviations, things like b. for born, d. for died, m. for married.

Does WikiTree have something similar, that we could link to in our Profiles, and possibly add to?

WikiTree does have a set of Glossaries in English as well as several other languages. Here is the link to WikiTree Acronyms & Abbreviations. Link to a page with Glossaries in other languages.

Roy, that is a really great idea - congratulations for thinking of it!

To my knowledge WikiTree does not have a glossary page for abbreviations, but it could be done as a free space page and added to as new ones are identified.

You can get the ball rolling by starting it - after all, you are a part of WikiTree!

I was hoping it was there already... <g>

now a programming issue - how do you link to each of the abbreviations so they come up as a link in the Profile?
I'm not the be-all, end-all of knowledge about what's here - there is so much that is here that it is impossible for any one person to know for sure, although there are many who know far more than I do about that.

I can speak authoritatively about the programming issue, though.  It would require major development effort, plus if it is implemented then there would be substantial impact on resources which would add to the processing time to deliver profile pages - both view and edit ones.  As nice as it would be to have this capability, I wouldn't hold my breath in anticipation of it ever happening.

What would be wonderful would be a Glossary page with just WikiTree's unique terms.  Badges.  Stickers.  Project Boxes.  WikiTree trusts me with pre-1500 profiles, but WikiTree should not trust me for a moment to use these words correctly -- I just can't keep them straight in my head.

I desperately wish for a page which has (a) the word -- badges, stickers, project boxes, and there are a number of others as well;  (b) a description of what it is and what it is used for, in words -- and then (c) most important, a screen shot or other picture of what we are talking about.  A picture for something like this really is worth a thousand words.

WikiTree is by design a community.  Communities develop their own culture, and cultures develop their own language.  This should not surprise us.  But we will suffer the fate of the Tower of Babel if we don't provide some way for people to learn our language and get it right!

I just looked at the existing glossaries, which are useful.  But some things need pictures, too.  Add "tags" and "templates" to my list of words.  The glossary definition of tags tells you what it's used for -- but I haven't the remotest idea what a tag is.  A picture would be wonderful!

For TAG, look at the bottom of the first post above.  Those green boxes around the words profiles, profile_improvement, abbreviations  - those are tags.  They're used in G2G and on your own profile for what you follow, but not on profile pages.

Templates show as surrounded by {{ }} on the edit page of a profile, but are replaced by a box or link when the page is viewed.

Categories use [[Category: ]].

And links are [[ ]] for an internal link, usually to a profile page; and [ ] for external links to other sites.
Mikey, thanks -- but what I am hoping someone with the capabiity can create is a page with a PICTURE of each of these things.  I use these things all the time, I just get confused as to what to call them.  Then when we get to badges and stickers, I really need a picture of what we're talking about.  And yes, when a good soul like yourself volunteers to tutor me and teach me these things one at a time, using a thousand words where a picture would do better, that's nice -- but I don't think I'm the only one with the problem.  Hence my request for something that would help everyone, not just me.
