Have you ever heard of a town named Ponornitsai anywhere in the Russian Empire?

Ponornitsai, Russia is listed as someone's birthplace in a World War II draft registration record.  I suspect the person was born in Lithuania or possibly Latvia - all birthplaces of immigrants from anywhere in the Russian Empire tend to be shown as "Russia" on US records.

I have not been able to find that name anywhere.  Perhaps it's only close to the name of the town or village ... I will be very grateful if anyone can identify this place.  THANX!

PS  Handwriting and transcription error are not issues - the handwriting is very clear - here's the record if you want to see it with your own eyes:

So, this is a complete guess on my part ... and Google Earth! ... there's a Ponornytsya in the Ukraine.  Like in the North/Central region.  About 130 miles NE of Kiev ... Hope this helps.

Thank you so very, very much Bob!  That is close enough for certainty as far as I'm concerned.

Here's an interesting bit of info on the holocaust in surrounding areas.

Thank you very much, too, Summer.  Both responses - from you and from Bob - came faster than I would ever have believed possible.  I've been wandering around cyberspace for quite a while pulling my hair out over this.  I wish I could give 2 best answer stars since you both came up with the same - and obviously correct answer.  The only way I can think of to break the tie is that Bob was 3 minutes faster.

Really not sure if this is related, but everywhere I've searched PORNICA pops us as both a LOST river [sinking stream] and a geological landform and sink hole.

Sometimes places and people are named after or vise versa natural phenomena?

reference.\ on the Bulkan peninsula.
