Hi WikiTreers!

imageJoin in on this week's 24-hour Saturday Sourcing Sprint!

It's basically a casual mini Source-a-Thon.

When it's Saturday where you are, get sourcing!
(And quit when it's Sunday :D )

If you want to compete for the Weekly Winners badge, click answer at the bottom of this post, and let us know. Please include your time zone (GMT standard) and any teams in which you are a member (not required). If you just want to join us but not compete, click comment and let us know you here, then feel free to cheer the others on.

We have decided to use the Challenge Tracker to record the profiles we sources. You can continue commenting in your answer regarding successes, discrepancies, stories that tug at your heart strings, and new amazing sources. We also have a Google Hangout if you'd like to join us. It will be as busy or quiet as we make it.

  • All profiles improved must come from the Unsourced categories or be already present on WikiTree and unsourced - you cannot create new profiles and add sources just to up your tally. The hope and goal is to improve the profiles already on WikiTree which need sources. Other great ways to find unsourced profiles are to check out orphaned profiles and use the Unsourced by Country lists which Aleš prepares for us.
  • If the only source is a link to a profile is a profile or search results page from another genealogy website or the words "Ancestry tree," "Geni.com," "Pedigree Resource Files" from FamilySearch, and the like, the profile is considered unsourced. If you add better sources to the profiles, use the Challenge Tracker to include it in your tally.
  • If you find a source listed on a profile page at another genealogy website or at tertiary website sources such as Wikipedia, ThePeerage.com, Rootsweb, etc., track down the real source, add it, and include it in your tally. If you don't have time or know how, see the next point.
  • If you attempt to add sources to a profile and just cannot find any, please add a note under a == Research Notes == section giving where you tried to find records. Adding four tildes to the end of your note will add your name and date to the end (you won't see it until you save). That way the next researcher knows where to start. Do not remove the Unsourced Template and do no count in your tally. Examples:
    • "Looked for John in the US Census records for 1900-1940 and couldn't find him on FamilySearch or Ancestry"
    • "Searched Google for an obituary and didn't find one."
    • "FamilySearch's Pedigree Resource File has a record for this person but no sources are included" and give the link
    • "An Ancestry profile has sources attached but I couldn't find citations for the individual sources" and give the profile link
    • "Has a Wikipedia entry that (does/does not) include sources" and give the link
  • Remember, your sources need to be as full and specific as possible, so others find them useful. That means, if the source is online, you should link to it. If it is a page from a book, the page number should be included so others can easily see where you found the reference.
  • The tally is of profiles improved, not sources added. That said, if you can add a number of sources to a profile, all the better.
  • If you find a match and can merge a profile into an already sourced profile, that counts too. You still found a source, plus you eliminated a duplicate. To get to the Challenge Tracker for these, clean up the merged profile and then click the Challenge Tracker.

When you save the profile, a green bar will appear at the top. Click the Challenge Tracker button, add or verify your WikiTreeID, select a pre-defined comment or add your own to indicate which type(s) of source(s) you added, put a check mark in the "Saturday Sourcing Sprint" box, and click "Add Action." If you participate in the Monthly Sourcerers' Challenge you can click both boxes.

The Sprint tracking page will be updated after the sprint is over. Once that is done, a best answer will be awarded to the Sprinter who sources the most profiles and, if it is the first time winning, the Saturday Sourcing Sprints Winner badge will be awarded. You can track your progress on the Challenge Tracker report.

Thanks Joan :) great to collaborate!
Is there a G2G feed for this week's Saturday Sprint?

Thanks.

Linda G.
I'm in, working on my own onsourced profiles so far.
There is now, Linda. Sorry for the delay

The 13 Jan Sprint thread is open and ready to go.

So I spent the entire day researching one individual including a trip to the library to order an interlibrary loan of material and now my brain is fried.  My tally at the moment is a big, fat, 1 profile. However, it's nicely done I think so hopefully that makes up for my measly contribution to Saturday Sourcing. I'll see if I can pump out some more stuff in a bit.
Anne, thanks for all the hard work you put in to that one. Every single one that gets sourced improves the tree so please don't ever feel bad about that. Truthfully, one is usually my goal because I like to add ALL the sources.
Thanks Debi.  I should have walked away that afternoon after the initial work I did.  Instead, I also worked on a merge and managed to unintentionally and seriously offend one of the profile managers. When stepping back and reading it from another's perspective, it really could appear that I was being a condescending jerk though that wasn't even remotely my intention. Lessons learned, lessons learned.
I am so sorry it turned out that way when your only intent was the good of the tree. It's happened to me too and I remember looking at it from their perspective after being called out and thinking "oh seriously, how could I have been so insensitive." The PM and I had a long email conversation and came to an understanding but it took me a long time to work on profiles with managers again.
That was so thoughtful and kind of you to write and share that experience. And indeed, it freaked me out a bit regarding working on other profiles.  I did learn though and hopefully will be able to avoid my tendency toward bluntness in the future.
