Hi, I'm Rachel, a very new member to WikiTree still figuring things out. I'm interested in the names Buist, ter Mors, Weber, Witten and Bootsma/n.

Unfortunately I live in Australia and don't speak Dutch, so I'm a bit hindered in what I can research, but I have some pre-existing family trees I'm putting up.

Hi Rachel,

I see you also added an answer thank you and I'll answer that one eeh thanks for joining and welcome to WIkiTree and the Dutch Roots Project ! :)

Hi Rachel, welcome! I thought I'd reply because I'm also a new member (a few months back) and I'm also from Australia and do not know Dutch. However, it's not usually a problem because a lot of the Dutch sites can be used in English. There are some wonderful Dutch search sites such as WieWasWie where you will see a choice for English at the top. The other wonderful thing is that the Dutch records show a lot more information than some of (my) the English ones.

There are also many helpful people in the Dutch Roots project and you only have to ask a question and someone will help. Bea who replied to you before me is wonderful! Have a scan of asked questions to see what has already been asked.

I have to fit in my family history research between heavy periods of work but am always online so if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. I don't have time and sometimes don't understand all the projects WikiTree have but one day I might, and in the meantime I just work on what I have time fo.

Have fun and good luck

Judy

Hello everyone, My name is Rob Arzoni, clearly of Dutch origin wink, and I started to map my Italian roots. That led me deep into the Middle Ages and very beautiful stories. In the meantime I have started to map my ancestors on the Dutch side. I hope I can contribute to the family tree that connects us all.

Have fun. Rob

Hi! My family research has been hosted on RootsWeb WorldConnect for 20 years. That site is currently "frozen"; which prevents updates. I'm looking at copying parts of it to WikiTree.

by Frank Bax G2G6 Mach 1 (11.1k points)

Welcome to the team Frank, looks good to me, for us the actual records and links to the sources are most important and you probably already noticed there are a lot of Bax (Baks etc.) profiles present already, but we sure would love some help getting them all sourced and improved. If you have questions just ask we all are happy to help !

For now happy hunting and have fun :)

Hi, my name is Louis and I am researching my surname (Van Helden) and some other Dutch names in my family: Van Leeuwen, Bergmans, Glas, Kortekaas, Miedema and Buma.  I currently live in Colorado, USA, but I have lived in the Netherlands 25+ years ago and I still occasionally visit there.  Whenever I am there, I use my time to visit genealogy sources that cannot be researched online, such as physical archives, graveyards, churches and such. In the past, due to inexperience, I have failed to include sources in my information on WikiTree and I am now trying to make up for that.
by Louis Van Helden G2G Crew (810 points)

Welcome to the team Louis ! Wonderful to see you here as well and don't worry you're really not the only one who, due to inexperience (or due to a Gedcom import) failed to include sources in the past, but...better late then never eeh wink Sources are important so it's great you are trying to source and improve them all now, many thanks in advance !

If you have questions and or need a hand, just ask we all are happy to help !

Happy hunting and have fun :)

Hi, I'm researching Kuipers and Dikland. I've started adding known info to my wiki tree and have already made a connection to a member here (via tree and dna).
by Jonathan Kuipers G2G Crew (470 points)
That's wonderful Jonathan,  and of course if you have questions or would like some help just ask ! WikiTree is quite different from other sites so it sometimes takes a bit of time to get used to how everything works, but the main goal is to have all profiles sourced and improved and to have just one profile for each person that ever lived.

On behalf of all of us welcome to WikiTree and the Dutch Roots Project team and wishing you a lot of fun !

I have followed my ancestry to find that I have deep Dutch roots many from Groningen.  My paternal grandmother was a Belinfante and I am most interested in that line going through the Netherlands, but any information or help that I can give to others would be great.
by Jenelle Bartholomew G2G Crew (810 points)

Welcome to the Dutch Roots Project Jenelle, and, you probably already found them, there's already a pretty huge Belinfante familytree present at WIkiTree, unfortunately it looks like the majority is pretty much unsourced, so it looks like  your help really is needed, and it would be wonderful if you have some time and could add some info or sources to their profiles.

Of course if you would like some help or have questions feel free to ask  we have a lot of wonderful members who all love to help and work together !

Welcome to the team happy hunting and have fun  :)

Hello I'm Caitlin and I am interested in the surnames Debruin, Verstegen and Coenen and would love to join this project and find more reliable sources. I'm still pretty knew to Wikitree so i'll help out the best I can.

Thanks
by Caitlin Gerarden G2G4 (4.2k points)

Welcome to WikiTree and the Dutch Roots Project Caitlin, one thing I can explain already that's important and probably the most different from profiles/people from other parts of the world is the Dutch naming convention

In the Netherlands we for example don't have what we call, the 'pasted together' last names or last names with capitalized prepositions, so a last name like 'Debruin', if someone was born in the Netherlands, would not be 'Debruin' but 'de Bruin', and sometimes especially before 1811, people only were known by the patronymics, so the earliest original records where a person is mentioned are very important especially if someone was born before 1811.

In Dutch archives if you are looking for a person or family, you only have to add the last name without the preposition to the last name search field, so if you are looking for someone with the last name 'de Bruin' in any of the Dutch archives, you only add 'Bruin' to the last name field to get all the results. See also the Dutch Glossary for a little bit more explanation in short about the name fields and how to use them.

And of course if you need a hand or would like some help just ask, we have a wonderful group of members who all love to help !

For now just take your time to get used to how everything works around here at WikiTree and happy hunting, have fun !

Groeten aan mijn Nederlandse vrienden en familiegeschiedenis:
I hope that gets me off to a good start with all of you! I am a new WikiTree member. I have had a lifelong interest in family history which my fater instilled in me. On his Dutch side of the family, I am a third generation American. On my mother's English/Swiss/Irish blah blah blah, that side has been on this continent since the 17th Century.
Back to my Dutch roots, my 2X great grandfather Corstiaan Sederel came to the US in the 1850's as a part of the group that came to Pella Iowa. Over the next 20 years, the dePrengers, the vanHeukeloms, in'tVelds, Vrooms, all came to the Pella area.
I have connected with Sederels in the Netherlands and hope to travel there and visit. Some of them (Wim and Harda) visited our family in 2016 in Iowa.
Dutch history is fascinating and we hope to learn more and contribute and give a "Pella" angle to the Dutch project.
My daughter's married name is deJong, her husband being very Dutch American. His family settled in the Holland Michigan area, about 750km from Pella.

Welcome to WikiTree and the Dutch Roots Project Rick (Rijk)!

And I think just like for Caitlin (see the explanations and links above ;) ), one thing I can explain a bit already that's important and probably the most different from profiles/people from other parts of the world is the Dutch naming convention

Dutch for example don't have what we call, the 'pasted together' last names or last names with capitalized prepositions, so a last name like 'In'tVeld', if someone was born in the Netherlands, originally would not be 'In'tVeld' but 'in 't Veld'.

We of course understand that you are new and have to get used to everything so it's not meant as critic, many members have to get used to the Dutch names, so don't worry you're not the only one. Your Dutch is great and I loved your Dutch introduction !

Welcome to the team and if you need a hand or would like some help, just ask, we have a wonderful group of members who all love to help !

Wonderful Rick (Rijk!).

Welcome to the DRP. Happy it did work in the end.

Don't worry too much about being new, we were all once new WT-ers with hundreds of questions. I learned I only will have answers if I share my questions. smiley You know were to find me.

H E R E you find the  transcription of the marriage document  of 1823 of Corstiaan Sederel and Ariaantje Jabaaij with their parents named!

Thank you again for the images of the "de Prengers"!

Looking forward to work with you Rick!

Kind regards,

A.

Maternal great grandfather was a van Alen and maternal great grandmother was a Bult.  The Bult/Haveman lineage is easier to research since few came to America.

van Alen lineage is filled with hundreds of names that all trace back to the Netherlands.
by Wendy Hoffman G2G6 (6.7k points)
Hi Wendy, good to see that you want to join the Dutch Roots project. I know for sure that Beaour leader will grant you the badge asap. If there are any questions, please feel free to ask anything you want.

Regards, Margreet

Welcome to the Dutch Roots Project Wendy and thanks Margreet for the reminder I indeed forgot because things for the Clean-a-Thon also had to be prepared already ...lol..and no internet today...pfff

We are working a lot together with the NNS Project Wendy and the name van Alen sounded very familiar and I remembered we were struggling quite some time with all those different branches and van Alen families, Ellen (leading the NNS project) noticed some van Aken's actually were van Alen's as well, so there already are a lot of early van Alen's  present at WikiTree  and you probably would like to join the NNS project as well  ? wink

Have fun and happy hunting and of course, as Margreet also mentioned already, if you would like some help you know where to find us eeh, we have a lot of great members that all are happy to assist or help find sources or to connect your family to the main tree etc.

Greets from the Netherlands and welcome to the team !

Hallo allemaal,

Mijn naam is Petra Goedegebuure.

Hi, my name is Annamarie Jonker Welman, and I am researching the Oosthuizen family whom imigrated to South Africab.  Johannes Oosthuizen born 1672 and his wife Johanna Jannetie Maartens born 1679.
by Annamarie Jonker G2G Crew (800 points)
Hi Annamaria,

Welcome to the Dutch Roots project. I've seen you are allready Pre 1700 certified, so as soon as Bea (our leader) has some time (it's Easter in the Netherlands) she will give you the DR badge.

Just one question, because your name intriges me. Are you familiar with the Jonker Welman Family in Heerhugowaard?

Regards, Margreet

Welcome to the Dutch Roots Project Annamarie!

You probably would be interested in joining the South African Roots Project as well and I think you will find there already are profiles for a lot of the early (and later) Oosthuizen family members, so you can just attache or connect your branche if that's still missing to the already present families, or ask to be added to the trusted list for them if they already are present :)

If you still have questions feel free to ask, we all are happy to help !

For now good luck and have fun and thanks for joining

Greetings, I would like to join this group and I have a line of Van Cats, coming from Ilse of Cats in Zuid Holland. My 7th Ggrandfather is Claes (Cornellison) Van Cats b. 1641 in Schoonhoven, Zuid Holland, d. 1692 in Bushwick, New Amsterdam. He was married to Catalyn Jans b. 1641 in Amsterdam, d. after 1700, Bushwick.
by John Quigley G2G5 (5.9k points)

Welcome to the Dutch Roots Project John,we're happy to have you as a member of our team ! And looking at the info...you might be interested in joining the New Netherland Settler Project as well, we all work together a lot, and it's possible there's a profiles for a Claes Cornelis van Cats somewhere already, there were more people named Claes Cornelis that emigrated to New Netherland, so sources are important, here you can find what projects consider reliable sources  ..  if he was born in the Netherlands and with for example not just a patronymic but a last name already...it would be '''van Cats''' not '''Van Cats''', one of the things that's very important and probably the most different from profiles/people from other parts of the world is the Dutch naming convention, prepositions from last names for example are never capitalized and we don't have the pasted together last names and no middle names. (for example VanderBerg or VanDerBerg = van der Berg if he was born in the Netherlands).

If you have any questions feel free to ask we all are happy to help, for now wishing you happy hunting and a lot of fun ! ;)

thank you for the reply, I am glad to be a part of this group. I had forgotten to drop the cap on the van, in this country it is Van. I was brought up in Staten Island NYC and one of the streets was named Vanduzer, it was much later when I learned it should have been van Duzer. Anyway thank you for the reminder, and for the welcome to the group.

My pleasure John we're very happy to have you as a member of our team as well ! It's a worldwide tree and we all have our differences eeh, so it's totally understandable and no problem really wink

Welcome to the team Stephen, it looks like you already were able to connect some of your family members to the already present deeper ancestors eeh, so that's wonderful..if you have questions or need some help, just ask we all are happy to help ! :)
Yes, in fact I did a DNA test and a woman from the Pijlman (Pylman in the USA) family contacted me. She lives in the Netherlands and we have corresponded by email some and figured out how we're related.

Hi,

I'm Chantelle de Lange and I'm interested in the Family names, Kotzé (Kotze, Coetzee there are many different spellings recorded); Bol; van Gaalen aka van Galen, van Gale amongst many others. Excited to learn more about the name conventions (as many names changed and shaped after settling in S.A) as well as how to improve my profiles.

Thanks in advance!
by Chantelle de Lange G2G1 (1.3k points)
Hi Chantelle,

Welcome to the Dutch Roots project. And maybe you already know but your last name is a name that's very common in the Netherlands. I hope we can help you find your roots. Bea will give you the Dutch Roots Badge as soon as she has the time. In the meantime if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks Margreet! That's great news, since my paternal line is pretty undeveloped so far.

Did you find our Project Page where you can also learn something about the Naming Convention in the Netherlands?

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Netherlands

Welcome to the team Chantelle and you might be interested in joining the South Africa Project as well ? One of the leaders is Susanna, she also is named Coetsee so the name sounds really familiar and so did the other last names van Galen, Bol and yes not much consistency in how people wrote those days, they all wrote phonetically and there were no rules like we have them nowadays in how things should be spelled or written, so that's there are so many different spellings if you look at the records of th deeper ancestors. wink

Have fun and happy hunting Chantelle !

Hi! My 3rd Great Grandparents came from Belgium in 1849.  In the 1850 census they appear as Leo Demey and Sophie Demey and if I’m correct, the 1849 New York arrival documents have them as Leon De Mey his wife Sophie.  Every document (and headstone) from there on our has them as Leo and Sophie Demi.  According to research my grandfather, Leo Alexander Demi, (my 3GGF’s apparent namesake) found out that Leo was from Brussels and Sophie Millmaster (Americanized version of possibly Meulemeester?) was from Antwerp. His father owned many farm lands and hers a fisherman.  My grandfather wrote a book based on his findings but near mentions the names of my 4th GGPs. I’ve hit a brick wall and would appreciate any help finding my ancestors.  Thanks! Martha
by Martha Houston G2G2 (2.0k points)
Hi Martha,

Welcome to the Dutch Roots Project. The Belgium Archives are maybe not that well documented as the Dutch Archives, but I'm sure all together we can maybe crack that brick wall. If there's anything we can do feel free to ask.

Welcome to the team Martha and there's also a Belgian Roots Project with members that are really great in finding sources/records as well, so perhaps they also can help ?

And as Margreet already said, if you need some help, feel free to ask or you can also just start a G2G and add tags: netherlands  dutch-roots and for example belgian_ roots to the question + the ID of the profile you started the question for/would like some help with (brickwall solved), this way our members and others, following these tags all are notified and will help you.

And of course happy hunting and have fun !wink

Hi Bea,

Thanks for pointing out the Dutch Roots Project. An introduction. I am 45 years old and live near Haarlem, the Netherlands. I started researching my surname about 25 years ago, just wanting to know where it came from and what it meant. Over the years a spent a lot of time in paper archives only to find out I was barking up the wrong tree because.... a few years ago I did a DNA test through MyHeritage and found out that my fathers stepfather is actually his biological father. A few years down the line and I have managed to confirm around 100 ancestors through DNA matching but also finding some more surprises. Having used MyHeritage for a long time now I have become a bit disappointed with it..... a lot of money for a lot of false information and not a lot of community feeling. I like wikitree because of the fact we are all working on one tree. My list of surnames is too long to mention here but include a lot of names form Groningen/Friesland (my maternal line) and Delft/Westland (my paternal line). I saw we even share some ancestors (Scholte Nicolai) and really liked the spitkeet photo. I know my way around the Dutch and British archives and am pleased to help anyone. One of my current brick walls is finding the biological father of my grandfather Heerko Batema (born Zijlstra). So far not enough DNA-matches have turned up to triangulate...
by Remko Stift G2G6 Mach 2 (24.9k points)
Hi Remko,

Good to see that you've joined our Dutch Roots Project. I've read your story and I'm glad that such an experienced guy joined our team.

Hi and welcome to WikiTree and the Dutch Roots Project Remko !

Really happy with your help and yes we seem to be related eeh :) We also have a family tree at My Heritage but as soon as I dicovered WikiTree (in 2013) moved here and for the same reason, loved the idea and it's soo much more fun to work on one big world wide tree together with members from all over the world and with just one profile for every person, you are going to love it as well I'm sure !

And I'm not sure if it's possible for you already, because you just arrived, but to make it official and give you the badge, we ask if ou members first can take the Pre-1700 Self-Certificatie quiz, if you can and succeed you will automatically receive the Pre-1700 badge which will enable you to also work on sourcing and improving or adding early (Pre-1700) profiles.

We have this quiz now because in the past a lot of members started by adding/or importing a lot of unsourced and often duplicate  Pre-1700 profielen and duplicates can't be deleted and all have to be merged, anyway, to prevent members are making all the same mistakes we made in the past (I also imported a Gedcom in 2013 and still regret it, because it was a mess and still strugling with trying to get all my early 'rubish' sourced and improved)

As soon as you have the Pre-1700 badge just let me know and I'll award you the project badge, and just concider yourself a member already, so welcome to the team and if you have questions or need some help just ask, we all are happy to help ! wink

Hello, I would love to join the project. I have been researching and sourcing my dutch roots on Ancestry and family tree and would be willing to help where I can. I am mostly researching Nix, van de Wal, Jansen aka van Lonkhuizen, Pothoven and Brouwers.
by Alan Pendleton G2G6 Mach 2 (20.5k points)

Sorry for the late response A and welcome to the Netherlands and the Dutch Roots Project !

If you are lucky and perhaps you already did, you will be able to connect your family to some of the already present profiles of these families, and help to get them all sourced and improved is of course what we are all about, working together on this is what makes WikiTree so much more fun eeh wink Here you can find what we all consider reliable sources and if these are found, added and cited (preferred with a direct link) it's great.

If you have any questions feel free to ask, we all are happy to help ! Have fun, happy hunting and welcome to the team ! laugh

I saw an addition to my tree by the dutch roots project - I was so pleased - Thank you.

Welcome to the Dutch Roots Project Corina, both names sound familiar, so I think for both families you will find there are profiles of familymembers or deeper ancestors of them present already at WikiTree and happy we could add some to your family !

If you have questions just ask, we all are happy to help :)

I would like to join Dutch Roots Project. I have many Dutch ancestors who came to America in the 1600's. They include the families of Tunison, Van Steenburgh, van Vechten, de Vries, van der Veer, Bogaert, van Wesel and many others.

I am presently interested in creating profiles for Rochus Govertsz van Wesel and Margareta de Vries, parents to Cornelia van Wesel.

I am pre-1700 certified. Thank you.

Hi Tina,

Welcome to our Dutch Roots Project. I hope you find your way around the Dutch Archives. Sometimes this can be difficult and according to the names you will be searching in the province of Friesland I guess and that's even worse. Please feel free to ask any help you want to one of our teammembers. Our teamlead Bea is on Holiday, so your badge will be granted in the upcoming period.

Have fun in the Dutch Archives and don't forget our Dutch Naming convention ;-). (No middle name, but multiple FNAB)
