Like birth and death certificates, obituaries are only as good as the source, the person providing the information, ie. writing the obituary. Even today, obituaries are often written by family friends or cousins because the immediate family is too bereft.
I usually handle discrepancies in two ways prescribed by WikiTree. Either in a comment with the source citation, or in a discrepancy section.
When the data doesn't match what we know, we have to explain the reasons for our assumptions, this is part of the standards of genealogy.
If you are unsure of a source, you can always add a research section, also with your comments and what you are researching.
