how should I cite published obituaries which  document the death of a relative but which I know contain  deliberate diplomatic errors of

omission and commission on the descent list?

I find  obituaries interesting and helpful, and the deliberate errors just add to that.  I usually have a ===Death === section where I document not just the sources for date and place of death, but also things like wills and obituaries (I did something like that here).  So, I would copy the entire obituary into the biography, and then immediately put in a discussion of the errors.

If it is a name that is surely mistakin, I just put the proper name in parentheses next too it. I had too do that too this profile, and also cut in reference tags (Which is part of "wiki style")<ref>any first hand sources</ref>To back up the claims and in accordance to the person or subject. You can also add ''foot notes''(×2sigle quotation marks '')
too explain a fault in a source with a ''in the link below''.

Like birth and death certificates, obituaries are only as good as the source, the person providing the information, ie. writing the obituary. Even today, obituaries are often written by family friends or cousins because the immediate family is too bereft.

I usually handle discrepancies in two ways prescribed by WikiTree. Either in a comment with the source citation, or in a discrepancy section.

When the data doesn't match what we know, we have to explain the reasons for our assumptions, this is part of the standards of genealogy.

If you are unsure of a source, you can always add a research section, also with your comments and what you are researching.
