I posted a family favorite photo of my grandmother, Ellen Gaddis McDonald for week 2! It is of a time when she was much younger and was not afflicted with Alzheimers. This is the way we remember her...walking in grace and beauty! Here is the link to her profile.

There is no photo on her profile or here, Yes my dad's brother's wife has it and my dad has vascular demetia.  Which is like and similar to Alzheimers. and you are right Laura about how hard it is on the family. It is very hard and difficult on the family and also watching them through this before they die is very hard also. When you watch it every day and deal with it every day. So I know what you are going through Hen and as Laura said hugs and prayers coming your way.

WEEK 52 FAVORITE ANCESTOR PHOTO,

One of my favorite ancestor's is [[Chesterman-24|Maria Harriett Chesterman Apted]] who married Henry Edmund Apted.  I actually communicated through the mail with Emma G. (Fritz) Parker  Maria's great-grandchildren years ago, which is how I came into possession of the picture of Maria. Emma and her siblings loved Maria and called her "Minnie."  The photo makes her look so stern, yet she was so gentle in person.

It's actually interesting, my fathers, father is Ronald Chesterman Fritz. Ronald's parent's were Jesse Perry Fritz Jr and Caroline Jean Apted.

Jesse Jr's parents are Jesse Perry Fritz Sr and Dorothy Jane Cheney.  Their parents are: Jesse parents  Henry Fritz and Mary Polly Clark , Dorothy parents are: Moses Cheney  and Jane Burton (Frankland) Cheney.

On Caroline Jean Apted side: her parents are Henry E. Apted amd Maria Harriett Apted.

I'll start off again. I have uploaded 2 photos of my grandmother, Lily Burrow. I personally do not remember her at all. She died in 1969 when I was still young, before I had even started school. Her name was Lily Burrow. She was born in 1897.

The first photo is dated 1915 and shows 18 year old Lily chopping or sawing wood at the family home in the Catlins district of Southern Otago. If you look at in the background of this photo, you can see a steep hill and lots of tree stumps and rocks. The family would have had to chop down those trees and move the rocks in order to clear a level space to build their house when they first moved down to this district around 1890.

The second photo shows my grandparents, Lily and Roy Thompson all dressed up for an evening out. The location is their home in Mornington, Dunedin, New Zealand. This photo is undated but would have been taken in the early to mid 1960s, before Lily died in 1969.

This is my Great Uncle,  Ben Fullinghim. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Fullingim-5 ​This is actually a post card that read:

"Famed 'Old Ben Fullingim' from Tuolumne County, California, with his donkey 'Nugget' near Tuolumne City, above Turnback Creek.'Old Ben' is a familiar sight in parades throughout Central California."  

He was the archetypical 49er of the modern day.  For many years, he lived alone in a sagging shack he hand-built in the early 1950s on gold claims atop Mt. Eaton Road behind Tuolumne, Ca. 

 

My Mom had an original copy of it.  This is one that I found on the internet in years past.  Once upon a time if you googled old Ben this would popup as number 1.  Now I cannot even find it anymore.

 

I remember going to visit him on his mountain and riding his donkey.  He would take us into his mines show us around.  He had a really cool museum of old stuff too.  When his health failed and he had to move into town looters took everything that wasn't nailed down.

 

He was 99 years old when he died in 2003.

Thanks y'all, she was definitely a hoot. And a bookworm - she gave me a love of mysteries (a favorite author of hers was Agatha Christie) and so much more.

One of my favorite stories is when my Aunt Ann wrote home from Europe during WWII (she was a WAC), she signed her letter "Anne". Her next letter from home was signed "Mothere".

I really shouldn't laugh but the idea of being called Nanny and being compared to a goat is hilarious. I never thought of that before!!

I called my grandmother Nana. I'm pretty sure that is not a goat!! LOL

My sister name is Nancy our immediate family which is my parents, me and my brother would call her Nanny goat because of her name was Nancy. She didn't really like that nickname. But that was my family nickname for her when we were kids.

This is a photo taken around 1933, of my mother pushing her big brother Willis in the wagon. He had been pulling her around in the wagon, and then he told her to get out, and he got in, and said "Push me!" Lois was really surprised and delighted that she was able to.

My mother was a mistake--and the baby in the family. Her brother was 11 years older than her, and her sister 14 years older than her. My mother was very close to her brother. Her mother was not the greatest, and her brother helped to raise her.

This is a photo of my Grandma, Antonietta Maria Costa Zana Smith (farthest left). It was taken  in Houghton County, which is in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan about 1917. She and her friends came from Italy and other places all over the world. They were the first generation that learned English and usually translated for the parents. They were also among the first group of women to have the freedom to be in public spaces unaccompanied by men. Despite their household chores or work, they were able to find time for outdoor recreation—including, not only fishing, but skiing and snow shoeing and hiking through the woods. It is a favorite simply because not many photos during this time period show women enjoying outdoor-leisure activities.

This is my Uncle Al, my great-grandmother's 2nd husband, in the picture the American Red Cross took when he went into the service in 1942. What always gets me about this is that he wasn't even Scottish, lol. The story as my mom remembers being told is that he and his buddies went out drinking the night before they were to get their pictures and he was dared to get his picture taken wearing a kilt. Well come morning Uncle Al arrives for the picture dressed like this =D

I might have a little Scottish in my line Maggie but not a lot. Funny thing is there is no evidence of any Scottish in his line at all. His dad was from Austria and though his mom was born in Minnesota both of her parents were born in Austria. In a way knowing that makes this picture even better to me. =D

When Charles Henry Crofutt and Hattie Belle West were thinking about retirement, in the 1930s, they visited their son Kenneth (stationed in California) with the thought that sunny California might be a good place to retire. They must have adventured into the mountains to get this photo. I wonder who got the photos that Charles took with his camera? I think I have an original, it was in my parents collection and had been passed down by my grandparents. I believe that son Kenneth must have taken the photo.

While I was working in Newhall, CA (above LA), a friend said he was going skiing that weekend. Since we were equidistant between Ventura and Big Bear, I asked if he was going water skiing or snow skiing. Since he was a Minnesotan, it really amused him.

This photo is probably the most recent one on all of WikiTree, but it is one of my greatest treasures.  It documents the first time I met my second cousin, Dick Orkin.  He discovered his grandfather's profile here after I had made the thrilling discovery that my grandmother had siblings - lots of them, too!  Dicks's grandfather was one of them and he contacted me.  We rapidly bonded and, although 2,500 miles apart, we met twice in the thirteen months we knew each other, with a third visit planned for this spring ... but that was before Dick suddenly died on Christmas Eve.  I just added this photo to Dick's profile.

My mom has the original and her sister which is dead scanned it in to her tree and made a Leonard Family book for all the women and children of the Leonards. She even made me one to have. The title is Elcanah and Catherine Jane Hays Leonard family in front of someone house. You will see that the family is a big one. There is some in this we do not know or recognize. I think this was a family gathering and decided to have a family photo taking in front of their house.

After a lot of thought I have sorted out  a picture that I wanted to share. Its not the most exciting photograph, and will only be interesting to family members. Its a photograph of my father and four of my uncles. It was probably taken at a family wedding some time in the 1970s. Its special to me because its the only photograph that I have of three on my uncles. I have added it to the profiles of all the five people who are on it and done a bit of work tidying up their profiles.

I have many favorite photos, of which one favorite is a portrait image of my great-grandfather who immigrated from Helgeroa in Norway in the late 1880s.  He first settled in Chicago where he worked in a foundry, and later moved to Wisconsin where he farmed, and had dairy cattle.

My grandfather, Ole's eldest son, had begun this genealogy journey in the 1950s.  A few years after Grandpa's death, I asked my Grandmother if I could have the work that he had done, and she gave it to me including the photos.

At present, it's not clear if this photo was taken in Wisconsin, which is the more likely as he is clearly older in the photo, or if in Chicago, as even in his later years, he had gone back to Chicago working in the foundries for extra money while his sons remained to work on the farm.

What with the eclipse of the sun this past summer, which I went to Oregon to see, I thought I'd post a photo of my grandfather watching the 1923 (or maybe '25) solar eclipse in San Diego, through smoked glass.

My grandfather lived in Pasadena, and was the head of the mathematics and physical sciences depts. at Pasadena City College. He had minored in Astronomy at UC Berkeley. I imagine that those with him are probably family or possibly from the school, but the photo does not show faces well enough for me to be sure of anyone other than my grandfather. This photo was sent to me by a cousin, who has taken it upon herself to digitize and disperse to family all the old family photos.

There was a partial eclipse that my mother got to see as a child, and her father smoked the glass for her to watch it through, over a candle. He warned her never to trust just anyone to smoke the glass--that it had to be smoked until it appeared completely dark, and you couldn't see through it. That many people damaged their vision from using glass that wasn't smoked well enough. (Yes, I knew it was a second, and hoped it was okay.)

My nan Catherine Louisa Phillpott nee Bremner.

I love this profile as it has a picture of my nan with me as a baby, and with me as a young child. It also has a picture of her at the beach hut on holiday at Seasalter in the 1950s. I can't quite work out which picture is my favourite ...probably https://www.wikitree.com/photo/png/Bremner-458 

as it depicts a typical Sunday roast dinner...a tradition that still continues!
