In addition to the paper trail, there is Y-DNA. In the case of Ireland where the paper trail is usually limited, I recommend Y-DNA as a serving line if research.

The chiefly line of the Maguire of Fermanagh are Y-DNA Haplogroup R-L513. Some good work has already been done on this line, using Y-DNA.
