I hit 5000 profiles...

Not sure if this is worth bragging about or even if I should, but I discovered that I had hit 5000 profiles the other day.   I thought I had a few hundred to go.

Not only that, but only 3 of them are unsourced and I put them all in, one profile at a time.  No gedcoms for me.

Took me roughly 17 months.

By my estimate I will hit 10,000 by May or June of next year.

I wonder what the record is for number of profiles managed by one person and how long it will take me to beat it, entering one profile at a time.   I think may just try and do that.

Anyway, to quote Homer Simpson.   "WOO HOO"

Sorry, I just felt the need to brag.

Hi Craig. You are entitled to your bragging rights!! You have been an asset to others trying to connect to their ancestors with your contributions!! And a special thanks for insuring they were sourced as well. Now that's the way to WikiTree!

w00t! Congratulations!

I think I'm getting close to that number myself. Though I've been better recently about removing myself from being manager of profiles that I only have a true peripheral interest in.

WikiTree recommends limiting your watchlist to 5,000 profiles, reason not clearly stated. I entered in excess of 13,800 in about 18 months, all by hand, have been reducing that number for a couple of years, I'm down to almost 7600.

You want a goal, aim for 100,000 contributions.

There are a couple of reasons that I've seen stated, but please remember that it is only a recommendation, not a requirement, to limit your watchlist to 5,000 (also remember that your watchlist includes profiles you don't manage, but are on the trusted list for).

  1. The processing time needed to perform watchlist functions increases proportionally to the number of profiles on the list.  They caution you that performance time will be noticeably slower - maybe even to the point of frequent timeouts - if your watchlist is over 5,000.
  2. There may be a concern about whether one person can adequately perform the management duties - researching/completing proposed merges, responding to questions, etc. for that many profiles.
To Gaile's point, one of the reasons it is a recommendation and not a requirement, is because in general, members tend to respect the recommendation and so an issue hasn't developed.  If many more members were to start building massive watchlists, we would probably have to consider an actual required enforced limit. Just something to keep in mind.
Even with 5000 profiles, I've found that I rarely have merge requests, questions or requests to put on the trusted list.    For the trusted list, I have had a grand total of 3 people with requests.

As far as merge requests to me, from other people, I would guess, perhaps 15-20 in total, since I've started.

Not sure why.

The one sad part is that I have connected up with a number of other people's profiles and most of the time, they never acknowledge it or even thank me.

Honestly, I feel like I'm the only one out there sometimes.....
