My grandfather, Robert Coltrane, saved newspaper clippings from an infamous courthouse shooting in Hillsville, VA in 1912. His uncle, Ira Blair Coltrane built the courthouse and Robert also served in the search posse after the shooting. I found this photo of Bess Allison who was a passenger on the Titanic, on the backside of one of the clippings. It's interesting that the most well-known event in Hillsville's history took precedence in the newspaper over the tragedy of the Titanic.
I wanted to share this family photo of Bess Allison with the community. Location: Milwaukee. Date: .May 2, 1912
Click here for the image details page or here for the full-sized version (3024 x 4032). The caption reads: Mrs. Allison, with her husband, two children and sister, were passengers on the Titanic. Mrs. Allison and her family were bound for their home in Milwaukee after a happy European trip. She refused to leave her husband, and after passing her baby boy to her sister, Miss Sadie Daniels, ran to her husband's side with her nine-year old daughter in her arms. The three met death in one last loving embrace."
