This is Violet Rachel Victoria Payne aged about 7, photographed in 1897. I adore her wild hair and "Don't mess with me" stance. Her father was a Lighthouse Keeper so she grew up in remote, coastal regions, which may explain her windswept hair. She was estranged from her mother and I suspect may have had a rather wild upbringing. Later she married Archie Buick, who was born on Kangaroo island, South Australia, where Violet's dad was keeper at the Cape Willoughby light for a while.
