David thanks for hosting the chat. Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
I've done that...  it is easy to grab the wrong one.
Chris I see you used the Relationship option from the Find drop down menu as mentions in the Tips.   Nice going!
Yeah, I use it from time to time. I like it. Only thing is sometimes it doesn't match up with what geni has for paths. Probably multiple paths, right?
David I have been remiss in not thanking you for hosting this week!

You do it so often and so well, it is so easy to just forget to say a heartfelt Thank You!
Just think of how many e-mail notifications he's getting!
Thank you, Laura!
Chris I am going to set it up and forward all of the chat emails to you and it is a lot!! Not counting the other project emails and questions from new members of WikiTree I get. On a normal day, I get from 75 to over a hundred emails from WikiTree and members, double that on Weekend Chat days.
NOOOOOOOO!

Eh, it's okay. I can mark wikitree as spam and G-mail will do my bidding. >=)

I just get the odd pm from people on wikitree and post notification. Though, it would be nice to talk to some of ya on Skype.

Tell us about your hobby or hobbies other than WikiTree and Genealogy!!

My favourite hobby/sport is fishing for Black Bass.

by David Selman G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
I agree Eddie, catfish as well as both species of crappie are the best eating. My wife makes a casserole of grits with cheese, butter, onion and bacon that is great. I really like fresh french fries and hush puppies with my fish. The black bass (largemouth bass) we only catch for sport or in a catch and release tournament and only keep one if it injured and will not survive releasing.
If your grits tasted like cream of wheat, they weren't cooked right. Chef GORDON RAMSAY was once on a cooking show, maybe 5 years ago with PAULA DEEN and said he couldn't understand the American Southerners love of grits because they were so bland. Paula showed him how to cook them right. Now each MASTERCHEF season, one of the competitions is GRITS, and many of GORDON'S  restaurants have them on the menu
I don't know why but now I want to see a screaming match between Gordon Ramsey, Paula Deen and that weird lady from Amy's Baking Company....
Best eating are Walleye Pike, fresh caught and of course fried in bacon grease.
Way ahead of ya, buddy.
David ! David ! Try Paula's recipe for tomato grits and as a special treat put them in a portabellla mushroom and bake at 350 maybe 10/15 minutes til mushroom is slightly cooked but not gone soft. OHMYGAWWWWDDDD GOOD
I used to go fishing with my grandparents and my Dad.  They were big catfish lovers.  I was around 8 (yeah ancient history) and managed to snag a 9 pound Channel Catfish.  My Grandpa was tickled that the small fry caught the big fish of the day.
I enjoy woodworking, I like to make and modify electric guitars, and i like jigsaw puzzles
My grandson is hard to fit in clothes, so i have all ways made his costumes for Halloween and cos-play.  Since he  joined our Community Theater, I now make his costumes for all productions he is in.  That has evolved into me helping with the costume committee for the theater.  I enjoy researching ,for each era the productions are set in, and we try to come as close as possible in our costuming.

Tips

We have been walking through the available menus at the top right of most WikiTree Screens.  This weekend we will walk through the Find Menu.  I use this group of options quite a bit.  They help with research, communications and with some classifications.

  1. Categories takes you to a help page with prompts that take you to existing created categories.  These are use to classify profiles and are generally added to the biography section of the profile.  The page takes you to the top level of English Language categories created.  You would drill down to the lowest level and the lowest level is what you add to a profile.
  2. Connections and Relationships are ways of finding how you might be connected to other members of WikiTree.  Connections include those made through marriages.  The people must be connected to the Global Tree to make a connection.  This is the same as the link at the bottom of profiles connected on the Global Tree that allow you to check your Connection to The Queen of England, Kevin Bacon, etc.   Relationships on the other hand, only check for “blood line” connections and will hopefully help you determine common ancestors.
  3. E-Cards This is a fun way to send greetings.  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:E-Cards There are pre-created graphics or you can upload your own family photos.  See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Postcards  for more information.
  4. WikiTree and Family Search Matches.  You will need to sign in to both WikiTree and Family Search.  Then you will need to agree to share your WikiTree data with LDS according to their policies.  If that does not stop you, then you will be shown possible matches between the two systems.
  5. Orphaned Profiles.  This is where you can adopt profiles with no PMs.  Some people look for profiles with a specific surname or location.  What ever you decide to do, adopting any of these and making sure the profiles are well researched and complete really helps WikiTree.
  6. Pending Merges.  You can view this just for your watchlist or across all of WikiTree.  You can limit to:

All of WikiTree | My Watchlist

All Pending Merges | Pending Merges Initiated by Me

All Pending Merges Waiting for Action | Pending Merges Waiting for Action by Me

All Unmerged Matches | Unmerged Matches Initiated by Me

All Rejected Matches | Rejected Matches Initiated by Me

  1. Projects.  This is the list I word from in creating many of the Weekend Chat Puzzles (hint).  It lists all of the active Projects you might want to join, who to contact, how to join and also some interesting information about each of them.
  2. Search.  Has a variety of filters to allow you to narrow the search by surname, dates, and general text which might be a location or an occupation.  You can also search for name variants.
  3. Social Media.  The page says:  WikiTree is a friendly community, here on the website and elsewhere on the social web. If you use any of the following, please join us there!  A list of social media sites and methods are listed.
  4. Surnames.  This is a search page that lets you find specific surnames and all the people on WikiTree attached to that surname.  It is specific to one surname at a time. This is a good place to go to find other people who with a little work you might be able to connect to your family.
  5. Unconnected People.  Those working on Connector Challenges find this useful.  You can search by surname across WikiTree.  Any unconnected people on your watchlist will automatically display.
  6. Unsourced Profiles.  This is very helpful for those working the Sorcerers Challenges.  You can search by surname initial or by century.  Profiles are placed in this category with the {{Unsourced}} Research Note Box tag. If you find a source for a profile, remove the {{Unsourced}} tag (or the [[Category:Unsourced_Profiles]] categorization tag if it's been used instead).  If you can't find a source, add a Research Notes section or comment saying where you looked.
  7. Volunteers Needed.  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Volunteers_Needed  these are things you can do now to help WiliTree.  Take a minute please and look them over.  Volunteering is a great way to meet others and to help WikiTree be strong.
  8. Watched Profiles.  Another way to get to your Watchlist.
  9. WikiTree Matches.  This is where you can find possible matches to people on your watchlist.  You can filter the list by surname, dates, variants and more.  Please do some of these each week.  Every little bit helps!

Thanks for all the great tips, Laura!
Yes thank you a lot for those great tips you give every week Laura.Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
Thank you Laura for the great tips
Thanks Laura! Its amazing how many of these we don't ever try out. So its really useful to have a run through. I tried the 'add a thing' during last week. It went well.
Everyone is welcome to add to the tips.  Lord knows, I am not the Wizard of WikiTree!  I use some of the links a lot.  And honestly have not done all of them because some of the features I do not use.  (I have over 100k in my gedcom and it is not set up to be compatible with WT style guides and no I do not want to change it because it is set up to be compatible with 2 other international organization's style guides so I have no plans to every upload my gedcom.  Instead I am slowly adding them manually)...  I have a long way to go....
Again, Laura thanks for adding these tips each week during the weekly chat sessions.

Eddie, my youngest son (the one you remind me of) helped a HMRBand called A Lesser Hope get started.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlyONgv1-tI
Hi Isabelle ! Hi Laura !

Now, this confession of mine will probably get you to thinking Eddie King is fit for committal. I love Heavy Metal. But my very favorite of all time band is CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL.

Okay, here's where the crazeeee comes in. I own everything DEVO ever released.  Those dudes are over the top.
Really? Sir, I am afraid I am going to have to ask you for your '80s child badge.

Kidding. Maybe. My dad likes that band. And the Beach Boys. So many road trips where my brother and I would hear those songs. So many....

On repeat.
Eddie, I have you beat with diversity. My musical tastes range from Bach to Led Zepplin along with Garth Brooks and AC/DC. I have records, yes the  LP's, for a very wide range of music covering everything except Opera.
Greet choice this weekend Eddie...Heavy Metal is a great way to start and finish the weekend.
Dale, I married what is called an audiophile or something like that.  I did not have a normal childhood and was introduced to what you would call folk and rock by my husband.  He still shakes his head when I come home from driving and tell him about some "new" song I heard on the car radio... of course he will look at me and say something like, welcome to the 80s ....

Classical and Jazz and Classical Guitar are my thing but I have never had a taste for Opera either but Ron, my husband, does.  I have always thought Country and Opera had a lot in common as they are both very emotional in how they sound to my ear.  (Yes I know, don't shudder it is just how I hear them).

Ron is a film and video producer and does a lot of soundtracks in his work.  One of the studios here that he uses a lot has a composer on staff and they have collaborated on various soundtracks over the years used for "sweetening" which is when you lock music to visuals.

So while my music education is not my strong suite, my husband on the other hand is very well versed and over the past 41+ years of marriage and 4 years of dating has tried to educate me.  My sons take after my husband.
Hi Dale

Hope you're feeling okay after last weekend's toxic horror. I'd hate to lose a good friend. God bless and keep you safe.

I got into all kinds of music for my degree but you know I work with juvenile delinquents and after a day of near combat conditions, I crank the music loud LOL
After stuff like that, you deserve to make it loud, Eddie. Rock on. \m/
Laura, My best friend in High School and College went on to be a recording engineer and owns his own Studio today. He had recorded a wide range of music, he actually worked on the Grand Funk album "E Pluribus Funk", but today he is doing mostly classical. He has also won several Grammys for best surround sound and is in fact one of the pioneers of surround sound starting back in the 1970's. We both spent a lot of time at Cleveland Recording Company in the early 70's but I went more into radio work.

Eddie the clean up was not the greatest and in fact you can still smell the oil. It can affect the groundwater but we do not drink tap water ourselves, we have a cooler and use bottled water. I know from past experience that the grass may not grow where the oil contaminated the ground for the next few years, but it is not my yard.
Eddie, I know it is past the weekend but I thought you would like to know that when we came home from the doctors, just a regular checkup no problems, this morning the clean up crew was back again next door. They pumped some more waste away and put down a lot more  material to absorb the oil. It looks like it is going to be a very long job.

 Norway

Jan 21 flag day and Princess Ingrid Alexandra's day

For WikiTree members interested in Norway.  The regional, Counties and Municipalities have been set up. There is discussion on whether to establish Parish categories; please discuss ideas with the Project Coordinator. See: Categorizing Norwegian Parishes

G2G Tag: NORWAY

Leader: Doug Straiton and Lena Svensson  The Project Coordinator is Jarl Mosand

The Parishes are the key to research for Norway.  This website has a good explanation of the parishes and shows what counties they are in.  http://www.borgos.nndata.no/register.htm

Our Puzzle today is to find parishes or counties by solving some clues.

  1.  Oldest parish?
  2. There are more than 360 parishes in how many Counties?
  3. What two parishes were the most recently formed in the 1900s?
  4. County with the most parishes?
  5. County with the fewest parishes?
  6. County that includes Bergen?
  7. Which county has no parishes with data from 1600s, its earliest is 1705?
  8. Which county has no parishes with data from 1600s, its earliest is 1709?
  9. Which county has the largest number of parishes from the 1600s?
  10. Which county only has one parish from the 1600s?
  11. Which 2counties have the most parishes from the 1700s?
  12. Besides Oslo with 2 parishes, which county has the fewest parishes from the 1700s?
  13. Which county has the most parishes from the 1800s?
  14. 6 Counties have only 1 parish starting in the 1800s.  Which ones are they?

Question: How many of you eat a snack while WikiTreeing... I do!! So today let's eat popcorn because.....

Today is

This time-honored treat can be sweet or savory, caramelized, buttered or plain, molded into a candied ball or tossed with nuts and chocolate. However, it is enjoyed, enjoy it on National Popcorn Day, January 19th.

The word “corn” in Old English meant “grain” or more specifically the most prominent grain grown in a region. As maize was the most common grain in early America, the word “corn” was aptly applied.

As early as the 16th century, popcorn was used in headdresses worn during Aztec ceremonies honoring Tlaloc, their god of maize and fertility. Early Spanish explorers were fascinated by the corn that burst into what looked like a white flower.

Popcorn started becoming popular in the United States in the middle 1800s. It wasn’t until Charles Cretors, a candy-store owner, developed a machine for popping corn with steam that the tasty treat became more abundantly poppable. By 1900 he had horse-drawn popcorn wagons going through the streets of Chicago.

About the same time, Louise Ruckheim added peanuts and molasses to popcorn to bring Cracker Jack to the world.  The national anthem of baseball was born in 1908 when Jack Norworth and Albert Von Tilzer wrote Take Me out to the Ballgame. From that point onward, popcorn, specifically Cracker Jack, became forever married to the game.

Popcorn has another romance that may have had a slow start but eventually took off. Today, who can image going to the movies without getting a box of buttered popcorn. While popcorn itself was an economical choice for a snack food, the expense of installing a machine and venting the building properly didn’t seem worth the effort.  If it weren’t for Glen W. Dickson, we would be purchasing our popcorn from a vendor on the street before taking in the show. Dickson put in the effort and expense of placing machines inside his theaters. After realizing how quickly he recouped his costs, other theater owners followed suit.

The next significant advancement for popcorn was the invention of the microwave. Magnetrons, a technology produced by Raytheon Manufacturing Corporation for the military during World War II, were later used to develop microwave ovens. Percy Spencer was the man who made it happen. Popcorn was one of his primary experiments during the microwave’s development.

Today, Americans consume 13 billion quarts of popcorn a year, more than any other country in the world. A majority of the popcorn produced in the world is grown in the United States. Nebraska leads the corn belt in popcorn production.

Yum!  Now I'm hungry.... glad I got some bags of it yesterday!
We often have popcorn as part of our late evening snack! Lots of butter, please.
What an interesting story.

Isn't it amazing how the smell just makes you want some popcorn.

Or....how to torture your office mates!
Snacks mess up the keyboard, or screen if you do it on a smartphone. Also when you go tramping in cemeteries photographing headstones and find a sticky thumbprint on the lens . . . Not good.
I have this little tool that is a sticky roller and it picks up all the crumbs (from cookies yum), finger prints (from melted chocolate) and other stuff that happens to land on my keyboard.  Getting ready for supper now! (Roast, new potatoes made with the roast, salad, and I have to see what fun veggie I can make fast....)

Hmmm ... I wonder if anyone ever tried dipping popcorn in chocolate ... that is always an improvement, no matter how good something might be to begin with.

Look yummy could you please e mail me some, hope you enjoy them
Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat. I do.

My main Hobby is Radio, as in Amateur Radio. I belong to several groups including but not limited to Geauga Amateur Radio Association (GARA). American Radio Relay League (ARRL), Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES), Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network (SATERN) and soon hope to join the Kent State Alumni Radio Club. In my spare time I also dabble in Photography and repair/refurbish computers. I have been still reducing my watchlist but recently started improving the biography for Joe Walsh of the Eagles and James Gang. It is nowhere near done but I have added a lot so far, see Fidler-306 if you wish just be aware that I am still adding and rewriting things as well as adding more sources as time allows.

What a great idea, Dale. How many notable amateur radio operators have WikiTree profiles? Walter Cronkite, Garry Shandling, Barry Goldwater and Burl Ives have profiles. Godfrey-2320 could use some work. There is no profile for Dick Rutan and I couldn't tell if JY1 had a profile.

Here's a list: http://www.qsl.net/w5www/famous.html
Kay there are thousands of Ham's who are Notable. I do not have the time to work on all of them and my watchlist is still over 4000 but there is a freespace project for them, check out [[Category: Ham Radio Operators]] .

Another week of snow and ice!!

This week kept me indoors again for the most part as we continued to have snow issues. A Winter Storm Warning was in effect all week just about, where 4 to 6 inches of snow was expected with locally higher amounts. An a Winter Weather Advisory was in effect for central Middle Tennessee with a  Wind Chill Advisory for all of Middle Tennessee. Dangerous wind chills tonight will range between minus 5 and minus 10 degrees.

The winter storm created big problems for drivers as road conditions deteriorated across Middle Tennessee. Multiple cars were involved in an accident on the ramp from Interstate 65 to Briley Parkway that closed the ramp for more than an hour. Two people were injured in a crash on I-40 near Stewarts Ferry Pike, and two trucks jack-knifed on the ramp from I-65 North to I-24 West.

On I-65 South  a tractor-trailer appeared to have slid off the interstate at the Highway 76 overpass. Traffic was diverted off the interstate while the interstate was cleared. So many roads were impossible to travel along or over.

by Dorothy Barry G2G Astronaut (2.7m points)
Is that you and Lexie in the photo on the left? Lots of snow and ice in your area, here we had 11 degree temps, wind chill of just below 0 with just a dusting of sleet and snow. It was upper 20's last night and now it has warmed up to low 50's.

That would be me Joey, and Lexie. Today it was a whole lot warmer. It actually got up to 45 degrees and soon the snow and ice will soon disappear! I need to go shopping, I ate all my snacks... lol.

Oh and Lexie and the neighborhood dogs said Wednesday:

Yesterday here it reached a balmy 43 F and today 53 F  Loving the heat wave!  Odd since we are North of you!
Hahaha! After figuring out which of you were using Fahrenheit and who was using Celsius... Heat wave? Lol come down my end of the planet, we've getting high 80's/low 90's most days (yes that's using Fahrenheit for you lot!)... bearing in mind we've got summer as you enjoy your winter
Yes but after weeks of snow and ice and below freezing temps. These above freezing temps are like a heat wave!   During the summer here it gets into the 80s and 90s and often low 100s F so we do know what you are experiencing!  Never thought I'd be excited about  temps no more than 10 degrees above freezing but I was this week!
HA! Not sure about over there, but here we get a lot of goldilocks people in regards to the weather... can't be too wet, hot, cold, windy, cloudy, etc
I am in the middle of the US.  We are surrounded by 3 large rivers so often the "river effect" kind of lifts weather patterns off and over us.  We have accidents when it rains here let alone snow or ice!  So yes, we probably have our share of Goldilocks!
Wow Dorothy you really have so much snow is that normal you get so much snow. Must be very cold.

Susan that area of Tennessee that is the normal that Dorothy and them get that much snow. Yes it was very cold. It is now as she said That would be me Joey, and Lexie. Today it was a whole lot warmer. It actually got up to 45 degrees and soon the snow and ice will soon disappear! I need to go shopping, I ate all my snacks... lol My area which is East Tennesse we only got about 3 inches this time and last time we only got a dusting to 1 inch of snow. Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.

Hi Dorothy. Keep safe in all that snow. Its a little too hot here! So we are stuck inside with the aircon too.

Hmm. In the chat this weekend I've already pimped my comic and videos. I posted my bit for Eddie's challenge. Now it's time for a general post because these things come in threes!

Weather here has been weird. That's normal for New England. I did discover a 7th cousin here on Wikitree. She's nearby. That's even scarier! She's Claire Smith. I am connected to her via the Smith family. What are the odds? There's like a million Smiths out there. Researching that name is a pain. She knows it. I know it. The WORLD knows it. Still pretty cool.

Just funny that she's local. Is she watching the chat? Is she....Is she across the street?! Is she behind me?!

Eh she seems nice. I did post tips for how to best contact a commune office. The founder of wikitree saw the post, I guess and did something to it. https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/541796/tips-for-writing-to-a-commune-office

What does it mean when a thread is "Reshown"? He noticed me. This means I gotta behave. Aw, man. I was gonna put kitten pictures all over Selman's profiles.....
by Chris Ferraiolo G2G6 Pilot (764k points)
Chris, You and I are distant cousins and my mothers LNAB was Smith, but the relationship is thru my fathers Boone line. And yes I am very aware of the problems researching the Smith surname.  to make things even worse for me my great grandfather was a John Smith.
Trying to find our connection. Do you mind sending it to me in a private message? That would be great. =)

My Smiths start here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Smith-134996
Please, no kitten pictures for my profile, Chris, dogs of all kinds or fish if you like!!
I make no promises. *Edits profile to Fishy McFisherson....*

I was made for lovin' you, baby

My profile of choice is for the Drummer - Peter Criss!!
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Criscuola-2

Since Peter is of Italian origin, I could only go back as far as Italy and that was to his grandfather. Peter was married 3 times and so far I have 2 wives linked to him, but I have yet to complete their families.

And no, Peter is NOT connected to the tree at all - not yet.

PS - ONE of Peter's wives was a Playboy bunny!! I even found a link to her playboy magazine cover if you males want to see it. It is actually quite nicely done. Very suggestive, but nicely done!!

I will be back after my family chat which starts in like 10 minutes!!  LOL

Ciao!!

Hope that everyone had a good week. We had a bit more snow (unusual for our area), but it is getting warmer now. We are looking forward to spending some time in a warmer area for a few weeks, although with poor internet, I may suffer from WikiTreeWithdrawal.

On WikiTree, I've sourced some random profiles and done some data doctoring. Other than that I've focused on open profiles with a single letter last name. Most don't have an unsourced tag but have few if any sources. It is very rewarding when you can find that maiden name. I've been able to fix a dozen or so, either via adoption or leaving the PM a message on the profile.

Hi Kay, have a safe trip in your travels, thank you for your work sourcing and Data Doctoring.
Ditto to what David said Kay. Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.

I noticed a post about heavy-metal earlier in the week.

Here is a quick little story about my favorite metal band, although I can't tell you their name because I don't remember.

....it must've been 1989 or 1990, in Amsterdam.  I saw this contraption moving down the street.  I say contraption because what is was was a cherry-picker, one of those crane-type devices used to work on traffic lights or such things where a normal ladder just doesn't work.  A cherry-picker normally has a bucket for a person to ride in and from where the machine is controlled; raised, extended, left, right, back and forth, etc.

This cherry-picker was missing that bucket.  Instead, it had a gas-burner from a hot-air balloon in that place.  Then mounted down the shaft of the crane were several positions where something like tractor-seats were welded into place and were perched these characters making noise several different ways.  It seems like they were banging on pipes of various sizes, maybe an anvil and definitely some sheet metal.  I think two or three of them had welders torches and I think maybe a jackhammer.  They were quite a spectacle.  Bang, bang, whing, hiss, bang, bang, whing, hiss.  And for the refrain, Whoosh (that was the big sound coming from the gas burner of the hot-air balloon - accompanied by a column of blue flame about fifty feet into the air).  Needless to say it put a smile on my face.

Then I heard a similar group was to play in Paradiso, which is (or was) a sort of avant-garde music venue in Amsterdam

I went.  This group came to play.  The drum kit was wheels from automobiles, (no tires, just the wheels mounted on iron poles).  Large monkey wrenches were used to bang on the wheels instead of drumsticks.  One musician played a grinder on sheet metal, there was at least one welder's torch (I think two).  It seems like there was a sort of zylophone, only it was made of iron pipes getting banged-on with a ball-pin hammer if I remember correctly.  There was more but at the moment I don't recall.

Sounds crazy but it was really quite good and exceptionally clever.  Sort of a cross between African music and the noise of a busy junkyard.

I've looked on You Tube but I haven't had any luck finding the name of this band or even the genre.  I think it was some form of industrial noise.  I also think it was an English band that worked in Berlin in the 1980s.

That's heavy metal.  None of that 1970s boys that dress like girls and have big hair like the mainstream girls ended up looking like in the 1980s.  :D

I would like it well if someone could tell me the name of this group and what sort of music that was.  Remember, there were no conventional musical instruments used.  Thanks.

Vincent, On the Grand Funk song "I Can Feel Him in the Morning" They "interviewed" some kids playing in the alley behind Cleveland Recording Company and paid some call girls to sing the background music. The sirens on the Bloodrock song DOA were recorded by hanging a microphone out the window of the studio, again Cleveland Recording Company and recording the sounds coming from the street. A lot of groups used those tricks back then. Heck they even recorded my voice "singing" la la la la la when they wanted the background music to sound like thousands of voices, it was everyone except the engineer out into the studio and sing while he recorded us on many tracks that were later remixed and added to the background track. here is the vid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3O6yp6lk6I
Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
I can't imagine how the way Grand Funk Railroad was recorded has anything to do with this band I saw.  Maybe that was just a side comment?

Weather in Australia.

Hot. Followed by more Hot. The states of South Australia and Victoria are having temperatures up to 47 deg Celsius, while New South Wales is battling a significant bushfire. There's a big argument going on about electricity supply because no one wants a power blackout when it's this hot, but luckily I live in the state that got the WORLD'S BIGGEST TESLA BATTERY !!!!!, so here in South Australia we're just fine!

We need a WikiTree delivery system where we can ship you snow and ice and you can ship us warm or hot air (and not the spoken kind).
Hi Anne, thank you for dropping in on the chat. Maybe we need a Big Tesla Battery to run a Big Heater here on days when it is below freezing.
Jump the ditch if you like, we're about 10 degrees cooler here in New Zealand!
And quite a bit saner too, Richard. It has passed through my mind.
we have plus 6 degree in Denmark, still waiting for some nice warm weather. But will probably take a while.
Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat. Ditto to what everyone said Anne.
For our Fahrenheit friends 47 Celsius is 116.6 F.  I still don't know if it is easier to get warm when cold or to get cool when it's hot?

Yikes!  That is hot!

Note: Just for Eddie...

Saturday is ....

National Disc Jockey Day, or for purposes of this weekend's chat....."Eddie King" Day.

A disc jockey, or DJ for short, is a person who plays recorded music either on the radio or at a club or event.

The first disc jockey was an experiment on the airwaves. In 1909, sixteen-year-old Ray Newby was a student under the supervision of Charles “Doc” Herrold at Herrold College of Engineering and Wireless. He played the first records over the airwaves before the word disc jockey even existed.

What started as an experiment from the Garden City Bank Building where the college was located in San Fernando, California was soon being replicated by radio broadcasters across the country. Before Newby’s broadcasts, news, music and entertainment were primarily broadcast live.

It wasn’t until 25 years later that radio commentator Walter Winchell coined the term disc jockey.

Today, contemporary DJs play music from vinyl to digital. Regardless of the medium they use, the term disc jockey still applies.

Hip-hop DJs became popular in the late 70s and 80s using multiple turntables and using the turntables themselves as an instrument to alter the music. Mobile DJs often act as the master of ceremonies at events or parties directing the evening’s activities.

HISTORY

National Disc Jockey Day is celebrated in remembrance of the death of Albert James Freed.  Freed, also known as Moondog, was an influential disc jockey in the 1950s.  He is credited with introducing the term “rock ‘n’ roll” to the world.

So, for the WikiTree challenges posted by our own Eddie King, earlier in the week, let the music begin!!

Yaaay Eddie!!  Congrats, *Applause*

Thanks Dorothy!!!

Pity there was no Music or DJ award in the Awards Nominations!!
Not sure Eddie is old enough to know about wax/vinyl records and turntables. I have a lot of the old records but no longer have a record player/turntable to play them on.

Lets vote Eddie WikiTree DJ of the year!!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DJ_Awards    Yes they exist.   Wonder if we can get a category under the genre of "family music"?
Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
I'm sure Eddie knows about Vinyl. If I know about it, he does. I'm two years older than him. We '80s kids grew up with vinyl copies of the Star Wars movies and read-along books. THOSE were cool.

And my brother collects vinyls.

Eddie for DJ? Sure. Get him into the recording studio and I can be his manager. =)
