William Buckner and his wife (Catherine Siller) were both from Germany.

Their daughter Othelia (on a form she filled out) stated they were from Prussia.

Othelia married Peyton Grant Smythe on may 6, 1856 in San Antonio, Texas

Have not been able to trace Othelia's brother's or sisters, or past her parents.

Would appreciate any help.

Do you know what year William Buckner was born in Europe? Did he marry Catherine in Europe and what year did they marry?

Do you know what year Othelia was born and in what country, county and or city?
Frank, Othelia Peotelia Buckner was born September 17, 1837. Her birthplace according to two (2) records she filled out are: 1) Alsace Lorraine, Bremen, Germany 2) Bayern She married Peton Grant Smythe on may 6, 1956 in San Antonio, Texas and they had 11 children. her parents are: William Buckner born in Germany and Catherine Siler Buckner born in Germany. I assume that they were married in Germany as I can find no records relating to them in Texas or USA (so far!) I have checked all importation records in Galveston, but don't find them; therefore, I'm assuming that they came through Indianola, Texas (major gateway for German settlers). Indianola was wiped out totally by two hurricanes and all records there were destroyed.

Could the surname "Buckner" have been changed?  What about spelling of the name?

These my have been some possibility why you weren't able to find them.  How about census records from 1860 on?

Mary,

Thank you for the response.  Yes I have looked at census records.  Patricia Clawson also found some info on Othelia.  I have spent hours pouring over ship records in Galveston and never found the family.  Patricia did!!!
I'm happy that at least you have found an answer to your question.  Make sure you check the sources though to confirm that the records are true.

Sincerely,

Mary

I did some prelimary searching in Ancestry.com and found a family tree, which you probably already know about, but just in case here are a couple of things which may be interest (1) mother's maiden name is spelled differently-Siler (2) Othelia has a middle name of Paetelia. (3) Othelia's death certificate lists her place of birth as Alsace, Loraine; the Family tree says Deutschland, you say Prussia. While these all add up to essentially the same thing, remember when doing your research to be flexible in your terms with the geography. Along those lines when looking for her parents, remember that if they spoke German he may have gone by Wilhelm rather than William, as my forefather from the same area did. Othelia was born 17 Sep 1827 and died 14 Oct 1925 in Houston, TX, according to her death certificate. Her children with Peyton Grant Smythe on 17 May 1856 (Bexar, Texas Marriages 1851-1900). They had the following children according to the Ancestry.com family tree, which you should look at, Allen, Eleanor, Mary Matha, Peyton Grant, Herff Clarence, Tom, Gertrude, Earl, Ray, Regina, and Howard. Othelia Came to the US Via a Ship called the Audacia Valley. Port of Embarkation was Antwerp, Germany with destination being Texas. Country of Origin was Germany. Port of Arrival: Galveston. Date of Arrival 27 Mar 1846. Othelia was 6 years old and her occupation was "daughter". (Atlantic Ports, Gulf Coats & Great Lakes Passenger Lists, Roll 3: Galveston Texas 184601871 Catherine Buckner).  I hope that's a start for you. Maybe Galveston is a place to start? Good luck with your search! Patti

Patricia,

Thank you!!!!   I have spent days and lots of hours pouring over ship manifests in Galveston, but never found the family.  this helps so much!!!!!
You are so welcome John! To be honest, I never even saw it myself, just the reference when I did a quick search using Ancestry.com and it came up with all this information. Sometimes just luck in timing is everything and I must have hit it just right. Good luck in your search! Patti
