Is this indicative of a Popham family rift?

I'm just beginning to research my ancestory, and searched for 'Popham'. I was told by my mother that our family was descended from the Popham family - specifically "Admiral Popham, who served at Trafalgar".

The story also goes of a daughter who fell in love with a young man considered unnacceptable to the family's social standing, so she was told by her father to renounce her sweetheart or be disowned. She married him, and the family disowned her.

My grandmother was born Rosina Harris;  'Popham Harris' therefore caught my eye.

Is this the germ of something relevant to our research?

Many thanks.

It's hard to say.

The last relative that I ever spoke to about "Mary Poham" (a pun on Mary Poppins) as they called her, passed away a few years ago.

Marie was from New Orleans and married a Mexican Admiral (Angel Ortiz Monasterio) who was serving in the Spanish navy during the Spanish-American war. Angel was the first-generation son of Spanish immigrants to the Mexican colony, so he went to Spain to become a Naval officer.

The admiral, who was famous for capturing the US ship "Virginius" and there were some executions by firing squad of the captured "pirates". That could certainly have caused a family rift.

I am not sure if Marie met Angel before-or-after this incident. Marie and Angel then settled in Mexico city.
