That is a very early time for a European to be in Ternate (part of the Maluku Islands in Indonesia). He would, almost certainly be a member of the Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie) and he would have been in the Maluku Islands (known as the Moluccas) because of the all important spices grown there, in particular, nutmeg. To find out information on him, you would have to access the records of the VOC, which will be in Dutch, of course. However, UNESCO, with its Silk Road Project, is working on the archives. There is information here: http://www.unesco.org/new/fileadmin/MULTIMEDIA/HQ/CI/CI/pdf/mow/nomination_forms/netherlands+voc+archives.pdf
