Jan Janse - or Jansen or Janz or Jans or Ryckman? New Netherland Settler born about 1590, father of Anneke Jans [closed]

I had a request to protect profile Janse-10 under the New Netherland Settlers project. As far as I can tell, there's no consensus as to what name to use as the basis for a WikiTree ID.

I ran across a robust profile for one of his daughters that makes me think Jans is the better choice?

Comments greatly appreciated!
WikiTree profile: Jan Ryckman

As a double-line descendant through two of the sons, Harmen Janse Ryckman and Albert Janse Ryckman, I'm partial to the use of the surname Janse for their father, Jan. I'm also the current profile manager for this profile.

My understanding is that the addition of "se" to the name means "son of." Therefore "Janse" would mean son of Jan.

Anneke's surname would be different because she was a daughter. Her surname should mean "daughter of."

your understanding's correct about se (assuming mine is :D ). I think just "s" and "sn" are sometimes used too, all of which are abbreviations of the spoken name, which is sometimes written out in full as "sen" or "son" (and I really  wish I could remember where I read that!).

You might be interested in a page I just found that had a bit more on naming conventions (naming sons/daughters for grandparents): http://www.columbia.edu/cu/lweb/digital/collections/cul/texts/ldpd_5684818_000/pages/ldpd_5684818_000_00000222.html

In searching that collection, I also read (but didn't copy link or statement) that Anneke's use of "Jans" was the polite abbreviation of her first husband's name (which they had as Jansen - the transcription of her will has Janse for both her and her first husband - at http://www.columbia.edu/cu/lweb/digital/collections/cul/texts/ldpd_5800727_006/pages/ldpd_5800727_006_00000241.html ).

I just posted the proposal to the New Netherland Settlers project page that we use Janse for him.  If Jans and Ryckman profile managers are ok with that, let me know & I'll make the change once I hear from everyone. Please discuss here in G2G if discussion's needed no later than Saturday, Dec. 14 (I'll make the change Sunday at the latest).

Cheers, Liz
