So long folks. See ya sometime next month
Thanks for hosting us David and Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat. Eddie what do you mean so long folks. See ya sometime next month.
Linda, I can't speak for Eddie but at least he is only saying next month, and that would be next weekend. I might be AWOL until sometime in April, but I do hope to check in t least a little before then. Starting on Monday my schedule is filling up fast until mid April, correction I just got a message and I now have "plans" today! Gotta love grandchildren who don't drive.
thank you for hosting David

What is your Agenda or Plans for the Weekend??

Mine starts with having breakfast and our coffee then feeding Sarah and taking her out to play and for a walk. Then checking in or setting up the Weekend Chat. After that doing a few chores and working on WikiTree.

by David Selman G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)

Going to spend some quality time with our granddaughter (time sooo flies she is almost 5 months now) who is staying with us for the weekend and we're going to visit my mum with her, so a nice family weekend here (trying to stay away from WikiTree :P which of course isn't so hard with our sweet little pumpkin in ''da house'')

Have a great weekend everyone !

Oh what a doll!   Lots of kisses and hugs in both your futures I suspect!

Enjoy your time with her!   They grow up so amazingly fast!
Just enjoyed a celebratory breakfast at the cafe across the road after my watch list topped 2,500.   What's more, I'm almost at the end of processing the 32 page list of fully sourced family members sent to me by a DNA-discovered 4th cousin once removed in Australia, which, though extremely valuable, has been a bit of a slog.  Onwards and upwards!
Today started with coffee and oatmeal raisin cookies while reading WikiTree emails.  Nice easy way to glide into what comes next.  Have over ten people within my clans with birthdays today.  I update each profile on their birthday and started last September, so I have a few months until I have all my folks updated!!

Kay Sands, I was wondering what part of Florida you winter in?  I am in the Ocala National Forest and loving it!  Pretty day today for any number of activities!
Wow Bea she is wonderful what a beautiful little girl

I can certainly understand you enjoy spending time with your granddaughter
How do you deal with a watchlist of 2500?! Says the guy with 400 profiles on his watchlist.
After breakfast with my lovely wife, spent a hour or so working on my WikiTree, it's off to a beekeeping class.
Gorgeous Bea... she's a total cutie! I am sure you are having the most delightful weekend with her.
Preparing for genealogy course starting tomorrow. Still shell-shocked this weekend from fab stories way back 17th century, keep putting the movie in my head on repeat lol. And yes, get my sources and notes in a posh place and not backs of envelopes, then onto here. Then some merging next week with people that type IGI and nothing else in the source section. Promise to self not to get excited about place names when they are USA duplicate of here in England. But I can always take some deep breaths and re-run the seafaring swashbuckling thrillers in my head again.
Bea that is one gorgeous fairy.

Thanks, Eddie! I do like Paul Newman's movies.
My favorite Paul Newman movie has to be "Cool Hand Luke". What are your favorite's?
Favorite Paul Newman movie !

THE TOWERING INFERNO

Ya gotta love that one. The two coooooolest dudes of all time together

Paul Newman and Steve McQueen ! ! ! !
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000056/bio   includes list of his movies.
Paul Newman also did some acting as a youth at the Cleveland Playhouse.

His family had a hardware store in greater Cleveland, but he decided to be an actor instead of going into the hardware business.

He did his undergraduate work at Kenyon College and graduate work at Yale.
Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
My all time favorite is Cool Hand Luke!  Such a great movie and so many sound bytes that are so relevant in everyday life.  "we have a failure to communicate..."  Cannot believe he has been dead ten years now!
Paul Newman was and amazing actor
He was in "The Silver Chalice" but the movie that followed it for Paul, was "Somebody Up There Like's Me" based on the life of Rocky Graziano.

I liked Paul Newman's role in "The Sting."
Great stuff Eddie! My week's viewing. In terms of favourites Butch Cassidy and the Sting are oldies but goodies.

Today is.....

Peanut Brittle includes caramelized sugar or corn syrup. Nuts are added to the molten sugar and then pour onto a flat surface such as granite or marble and smoothed into a thin sheet. The candy cools into a hard, brittle treat that is broken into smaller pieces. Some of the best brittles are hand stretch into a thin, easily cracked candy that melts in the mouth.

Peanuts are rich in monounsaturated fats, the type of fat that is emphasized in the heart-healthy Mediterranean diet. Studies of diets with a special emphasis on peanuts have shown that this little legume is a big ally for a healthy heart. Peanuts are good sources of vitamin E, niacin, folate, protein and manganese.

Note: Peanut allergy is one of the most common food allergies. Peanuts are not the same as tree nuts (almonds, cashews, walnuts, etc.), which grow on trees. Peanuts grow underground and are part of a different plant family, the legumes. Other examples of legumes include beans, peas, lentils and soybeans.

The history of peanut brittle is uncertain, though one legend says it was all a mistake. The story goes that a southern woman was making taffy and instead of using cream of tartar, she used baking soda by accident.

Here is a wonderful peanut brittle that is easy to make and wows everyone! Have all the ingredients for this recipe measured out and ready. This recipe requires that you react quickly. You do not have time to measure ingredients in between steps.

Dorothy, you and your ability to find the most interesting "National Day's" is still amazing. This one is great, I really enjoy peanut brittle.
According to my DNA I have 3 times the possibility of developing a peanut allergy. I don't have one but I avoid it anyway just to be safe.  Never really ate it a lot because it would upset my stomach.  My husband and children and grandchildren on the other hand seem to love it.
Thank you, as always Dorothy, for another wonderful 'Today Is'

I think I actually drooled a little, lol - looks yummy! One of my daughters had a nut allergy, another was only allergic to Pistachios. I didn't get to keep nuts in the house often when they were younger. Now that they're all on their own - I still forget to buy them at times.
I like peanut brittle but my dental hardware no longer likes hard candy.
Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
The biggest reason for peanut allergies is waiting until after age 2 before having any peanut butter fearing possible peanut allergies. The younger you have peanut products, the less likely the allergy.
That may be so Steven, but my mom’s side seems to be full of allergies... My first daughters favorite foods age 2-3... Peanut butter sandwich, oranges, and milk n juice. They took away nuts, dairy, and citrus. Ugh... made it hard to feed her! But, if you take it all away for a year or two, they get over it. The second daughter never got over the Pistachio allergy. I still don’t understand the difference between that and peanuts! I was over forty-five before I even bought those again! Love me some Pistachios...
Mindy I think Peanuts are a bush and pistachios are a tree nut so different classifications.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pistachio

The FDA has specific allergy classifications and tree nuts is one of them.

Also there are food allergies (means you can go into shock) vs food sensitivities (means you have a reaction that makes you feel bad but it does not cause you to go into shock).  Problem is a sensitivity can become an allergy so if you have any kind of a reaction you are better off avoiding the substance unless you are working with a medical professional to try and desensitize you.  There is disagreement about if that is possible or not.
My granddaughter has a severe allergy to peanuts.   It was discovered when she was 18 months old and her day care provider cut her sandwich with the same knife as the one she used on the others child's sandwich.
Makayla had been on the allergy free diet recommendations because of her fathers allergies.  Her mother received a call a work that the child's eyes were swollen shut.  Her grandfather got some Benadryl from the drugstore and that worked.  When she was two, and old enough for allergy tests, the doctor said her reaction went right off the page.  She
avoided peanut until third grade when she was in art class.  A parent,
I still don't know why she was in the class but thank heavens she was,
asked the teacher what was wrong with Makayla.  The teacher took one
look at her and grabbed her hand and literally ran to the nurses office
with her.  She had tears running down her cheeks and she told her mother later that her mouth tingled.  She didn't know what was wrong because she had never had that reaction before.   After treatments they
looked for a cause and found out the class before had used peanut butter in a project but some was not totally removed on some surfaces.  Now Makayla had progressed to what they call "environmental" allergy.  She now has
an eppie pen that she carries in a bag to use if it happens again.  She has been hospitalized (er room) twice because of food having peanut butter when you normally don't expect it to be a content.  The rule now is
"If you can't read it, you don't eat it" if it is somewhere she can't ask or check in some way.  The doctor says she can't even try the desensitizing
shots, she is so allergic they might kill her.

Thank you everyone for the comments and especially sharing your experiences with Peanut and nut allergies. I am glad however those who had it were able to be treated immediately. More and more I see warnings about it in public cafeterias and bans concerning peanut butter sandwiches in schools and mess halls. I am glad there are eppie pens to carry just in case.

Hi Laura,

Thanks for the tips! I hope the plumbing and heating issues are being resolved :(
Thanks for all the great tips, Laura! You're a star!
Thanks Mindy!  The workmen are all gone now and the plumbing is working again (any of you who have the new water saving toilets probably have run into them stopping up.  This is one of the more expensive and better brands and this is the 4th call in a year).  With entertaining we need working facilities.  Heating and cooling all checked out but the humidifier needed a new filter.  I knew it was not right because every time we touched there were static sparks (not to be confused with the romantic ones)  So hopefully we are now back t normal.  Thanks to David too!
Ditto to what Mindy said and also David Laura. Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.

your tips lack links.

Another good place for sources and such can be found at kitty's library.

you can find that link and more on the info tab of the Data Doctor Spreadsheet

enjoy.

So glad to hear it's all better Laura!!
Yeah for some reason today the links were making the post think it was over 8000 characters and would not post until I removed all of the links... sigh...  it happened with the puzzle too.   What is weird is that when I drop it into word and do the character count including spaces it is well below the 8000 character limit so it is reading something in the code we can't see is my only guess...   Or we have Gremlins!
Excellent Laura - great work! It is so good to go through everything- after a while you forget all the menu options you haven't tried, so its great that you prompt us to explore.

Today's been a quiet week relatively. Working on a video for this weekend about a comic character I grew up reading in the '90s. Yes, I am one of the younger members here. I'm like two years older than Eddie and he doesn't let me forget it. *shakes fist*

On the genealogy front, I did a little CSI Haverhill division in g2g this week. I was looking for the deaths of a couple people. Morbid as that sounds I needed the info.

I was checking out the story of a gggrandfather, Pierre Cadron: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cadron-10

His story is a little complicated as his last name in records kept changing even though he's in Haverhill. He was in his son in law's house in 1880 with a TON of kids. I checked out the address on Google Earth. Small place. Though, I think they changed things in the last hundred years or so.

Right so he moved out and his wife passed away. Found his death record thanks to someone here and the rest is history.

My plans for this weekend is to get this video up. It's being edited now. But, I will pop back every now and then to check things out.  I might have some more questions about a couple people. I don't know.

The biggest news I have is that I ordered a DNA test for me and my dad to take. My mom doesn't really want to do it as she can kinda see where she came from thanks to my research (France and England). It was so random. My dad was talking to his cousin in TN as her mom had some heart issues. She's in her 90s so it's tough.

After he gets done with her he tells me to order the tests. I'm like "Okay." I order them and told him how much two tests were. He said he's going to pay me back. He's already my boss at the office. So it's no big deal.

Gonna be interesting to see what results I get. I have seen Youtube videos of people taking the tests. Spitting in a tube on Youtube seems to get a lot of subscribers. Hmmmm......

There may be something to that....

I WOULD make a video about it. Dunno if it would get a huge reaction. If I did, I would mention the genealogy sites I was on. =)
by Chris Ferraiolo G2G6 Pilot (764k points)
Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat. Ditto to what Mindy said Chris.
That I'm an old man? Maybe. I can still pull it off. =D
No because you had a productive week. Plus congrats on getting your dna done and good luck on the video.
I figured as much. Just havin' a bit of fun. Hope you had a good week! =D

And thanks!
Yes I did.  I have found and met a kinfolk here on WikiTree his 2nd great grandfather Jason Barnett is my third great grandfather. He just joined this year on WikiTree. His name is Brian Barnette. I was happy to locate someone. He has recently moved to Johnson City, Tennessee where my parents was born and raised in. So this week was a lot better for me. Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
Congrats! I have a few cousins like that I'd like to meet. Problem is people are busy. It happens, I guess. A couple are on Wikitree. But, they don't post in g2g.

Sounds like a great connection!

Lo and there shall be a video on the Internet:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYptkBFUhqw

Hope ya like comic reviews, wikitree.

Good luck Chris with the DNA test. Should be exciting to see the results! Are you doing Y-DNA?
Chris I saw the hard work and editing that you did to make that video.  I know that is not easy.  It took a lot of thought and research to put that review together that was also a testimony to your favorite super hero.  You shared a real link to something that has great meaning to you.  That takes courage.
Thanks, Laura! It takes a while to put the videos together. Writing the script, scanning the comic, recording etc all take time.  I don't mind putting videos online. Sometimes I get negative comments, but, that's just Youtube being Youtube. I delete the bad ones. =D

I'm all for creative criticism, but, once someone insults you all bets are off.

Though, ya know Spider-Man is my all-time favorite superhero. Darkhawk is just one of my favorites.

Gillian: I got a test for my dad so I believe that's gonna be Y-DNA. I would have my mom take one, but, her line is well documented. I checked out other tests and saw that there's a "cousin locator". I think Ancestry has that, too.

Then again I found some cousins without needing a DNA test.

Happy Weekend to All!

The weather is a roller coaster lately in southeast Virginia. However, there is a sense that spring is coming & I have been getting a lot of landscape design inquiries from folks with spring fever.

Speaking of fever, Super Bowl fever has gripped my friends and family from Philadelphia (my apologies to Patriots fans, but you must learn to share).

Wikitree just keeps getting better & better and those I meet are here are just awesome.

Wikitree ROCKS!

Have a great week.
by Doug Lockwood G2G Astronaut (2.6m points)
WikiTree DOES rock Dough :D  And the weather here in Kentucky is pretty crazy as well. It's supposed to 'warm' up a little this weekend - I'm thrilled.
I noticed the daffodils had shoots coming up last Sunday.
Hi Doug, don't let the landscape work get in the way of your WikiTree fun! The weather here has been much the same as your with it cold one day and warm the next. We need some rain really bad.
This week it reached the 60s F but they are predicting snow next week again.  Sigh...
Kay, you must post pictures of the daffodil shoots....I need a "spring is coming" fix.
Ditto to what everyone said here. Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
Sorry Doug, by the time we return from Florida the daffodils will be long gone. Maybe I can get an azalea picture here. Later I’ll try to get a picture of my unique bearded iris - it’s a dark burgundy almost black. It’s tough to grow anything near our maple trees, but they are supporting a wire ham radio antenna so won’t be coming down anytime soon. Will be interesting to see if my coreopsis survived the winter.
Hi Doug... totally agree about WikiTree and everyone amazing around here! I gather you are a landscaper. What an amazing job to do. So exciting to see a flat piece of dirt turn into a somewhere where you just love to be.
What an amazing group of people with diverse talents on the chat!  I love it!

It is a nice warm sunny day where I live but the daytime high's look like a roller coaster for the next week. I am going to be even more limited with my time on WikiTree for the next 3 months because I have to hep a family member who has a lot of medical tests coming up, I signed up for 2 genealogy programs at my local library and starting mid February I am starting a 12 week course for Amateur Radio. This is in addition to all of my other activities. I will soon be helping to teach some Amateur Radio courses, I am already a registered instructor, and I will be taking a more active roll in giving the Amateur Radio exams as well because I am a Volunteer Examiner. I am still working on improving the profiles I manage as well as reducing the size of my watchlist, the last one is slow going because I am still over 4000 profiles but I am slowly getting there.
by Dale Byers G2G Astronaut (1.7m points)
Ummmm..... Dale .... do you sleep?

Good luck with it all!
I actually got 8 hours in last night. But that is not normal, usually it is about 5 or 6 hours, I have been feeling a little under the weather recently.
Congrats on becoming a VE
Kay, I have been an ARRL VE for a couple of years but I am also registered with W5YI VE for a club in Mahoning County, Ohio and Laurel VE for for  club in Geauga County, Ohio.
Hi Dale, sounds like your way busy.
No David, just retired.
Ditto to what everyone said Dale.Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
I believe five lol...congrats on your one night of eight!
Last night, Friday, I slept for 10 hours. I might be getting sick, I don't have time to be sick!
I have my marine VHF radio licence. Still feel really nervous talking on there! But you've got to do it.

Greetings, Cousins!

Thanks for hosting, David!

I thought I should check in, since it's been a while.  For several months, my cataracts have worsened to the point where everyday tasks have become difficult, slow, and frustrating.  I had to give up driving for safety's sake.  Actually, I continued to drive far beyond the bounds of prudence, but I didn't break anything or hurt anyone (just annoyed some fellow motorists).  Genealogy loses its appeal when you can't read handwritten docs or tombstone images. Likewise origami is nearly impossible when it comes to small, precise folds. All your lovely photos look to me like impressionist paintings.  I can still play music, though, so I'm sending y'all a tune instead of a paper critter.

Surgery is Tuesday, and the other eye two weeks later.  I'll be back up to speed just in time for my seasonal work crush.  More later!

Warm regards,

Herb

Thanks Laura!
Hope you heal fast, sir. Eye issues are crazy. Even for people my age.  People wonder why I don't have contacts. I don't have the patience to get them in there.

Having had my own eye issues, I sympathize. Hope you get things resolved as fast as you can.

Cheers!
Thanks, Chris.  I never had contacts either, for the same reason.  Funny you should mention age.  At the surgeon's office, I think I was the youngest patient there, by at least a decade.  I'm 62.  Docs told me the type of cataract I have tends to start earlier (mid-40s to early 60s) and progress very rapidly.  'Rapidly' is right!  I can tell the difference from day to day.  So, Tuesday is the day.  I'm super excited to get it done.  :)
Herbert, Ditto to what everyone said here. I missed hearing from you and the origamis that you were posting. My mother had both of her eyes done and my dad has had one and when it gets warm he going to have the other one done. Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
I'm uhh....One of the youngest people here. But, I am two years older than Eddie.

Well, good luck with everything. Had more than my fair share of appointments and stuff myself.
Thanks, Linda, for your kind thoughts and for the gold star!
Hello Herbert!

I just had my cataracts removed in December and am so happy I did!  I can walk around without glasses and that was without the expensive laser version.  It was the best thing I ever did for myself.  Colors are more vibrant and the days are infinitely brighter with better vision!  Sounds like you are in for a brand new outlook on life!!  Smiles, Cindy
Thanks, Cindy, I am looking forward to a similar experience.  I waited much too long to do it.
Hi Herb. Lovely to meet you. Hope all goes well on Tuesday and life starts looking great again.
Thanks, Gillian!  Nice to meet you, too.

Being a JRP member means you’ll be linked to our ongoing conversations to keep you in the know. The biggest reward is finding your Jewish Ancestors and Living Relatives.
  • Members of Jewish Roots Project are focused on adding to our knowledge bases (genealogy and Jewish culture) and, via research, on finding Jewish ancestors or living relatives. They are logically and historically part of specific, coherent trees of Jewish, mixed-religious, or mixed-cultural families, and often fully supported by genetic testing through the appropriate DNA tests. These methods all lead to clarity within their family trees and the readiness for possible inclusion in others’ already-compiled family trees.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day, is an international memorial day on Jan 27 commemorating the tragedy of the Holocaust that occurred before and during the Second World War, which resulted in the death of an estimated 6 million Jewish people, 200,000 Romani people, 250,000 mentally and physically disabled people, and 9,000 homosexual men by edict of the Nazi regime. It was designated by the UN General Assembly Resolution 60/7 on Nov 1, 2005 during the 42nd plenary session. I'm gonna cheat. I'm gonna cheat ! ! My boss is a rabbi. I'm gonna cheat !
Thank you, Laura, for another of your great puzzles.
Thank you for the puzzle Laura! Got to keep our minds sharp...
Eddie getting someone to collaborate on the puzzle is not cheating!  My puzzles are open book, open to be worked on by teams of people, and just for fun!
Ditto to what everyone said. Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
Thanks Laura. Looking forward to checking the answers on this one.

David thanks so much for hosting again!  Sorry I was late today.  Had a plumbing problem.  It is solved now.  Waiting for the heating man now..  When it rains it pours with household issues it seems!  Soon things should be back to normal!
by Laura Bozzay G2G6 Pilot (830k points)
Hi Laura, glad your plumbing problems have been resolved and your heating guy is fixing the problem with your heating system. Last month we came home to find a green tag on the front door from the water company that sad it showed we had a leak. I checked everything including the hot water heater, toilets and found no leaks. The next day our son checked it and same results no leaks so we called the plumber and they traced the lines to the house and found no leak. Our water bill was over double last month so we are waiting to see if the leaks fixed there self or we still have a hidden leak. The city, of course, was of no help with either the bill or the leak.
Interesting.  The water bills here have seemingly also doubled for our subdivision plus some.  Local govt officials have been contacted.  So far the answers don't make a lot of sense...
Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
Thanks Laura for all your contributions to the chat in between all your water dramas. Its really appreciated!

I'm writing a novel. RAPHAEL DESCENDING. In January 2034, they discover that on August 8 2035 an asteroid RAPHAEL will impact Earth. This isn't an Armageddon or Deep Impact clone. My Earth takes an extinction level hit. 10.0 earthquakes worldwide, massive volcanic eruptions, super tsunamis, hurricanes, a volcanic winter that starts a new ice age. World leaders build bunkers to save their selected elite. These bunkers for a variety of reasons will fail.
General Broderick Radcliffe, Brody, as head of the US Army Corps of Engineers is in charge of the US bunker building. The General's wife Ronnie is director of an "abandoned children's" home. The Radcliffe's never had children of their own but they have a sort of surrogate daughter Emma. When the president tells Brody he and his wife can have a spot in the bunkers but not Emma and the orphans, Brody goes rogue and disappears. He knows of an abandoned army missile base at Silver Lake Idaho and goes there with his "family" Ronnie, Emma, the kids, and four long time Army friends, 2 men, 2 women. They plan to live in some of the empty
silos and grow food crops in the others. Two days before Impact, Emma has to go into a town about a hundred miles away to get some needed final supplies. The city is in riot. Troops are there. Captain Keith Stone catches Emma looting. She convinces him to talk to the general on her cell phone. Brody convinces Keith to help Emma and guarantees him sanctuary at Silver Lake. On the way back to Silver Lake Keith and Emma are ambushed by bandits. Keith kills the bandits but is seriously wounded.
The general doesn't trust Keith but he's stuck with him. But as problems arise, Keith solves them. While the well-stocked elaborate bunkers fail, the simple colony at Silver Lake survives and thrives. Keith says they have a guardian angel looking after them. A combination of circumstances leads Ronnie to believe that Keith is the angel. A real angel who's taken mortal form.
Raphael is the Archangel of healing and family. RAPHAEL DESCENDING. Does that mean the asteroid or the Archangel? Is Keith just a decent, very talented man or a Celestial?

Drawing the characters was pretty easy. For Brody, I "see and hear" Richard Dean
Anderson as he was on Stargate SG1. Keith, the maybe angel has to be beautiful
and larger than life. For him, I see and hear Brad Johnson.

Mrs Radcliffe has to be a strong woman so I see Marg Helgenberger from CSI

And what started this you wonder? Ha! Eddie's weird brain!
I was watching on of my favorite movies LEFT BEHIND starring Brad Johnson and Kirk Cameron.
Then I saw the CSI episode where Brad guest-starred with Marg. (they were also in the Spielberg movie ALWAYS)
And I was cruising Langston Hughes - GOD GAVE NOAH THE RAINBOW SIGN. NO MORE WATER, THE FIRE NEXT TIME.
Then the Daily Bread lesson was
Revelations 6:12-17King James Version (KJV)

12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great
earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became
as blood;

13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her
untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.

14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every
mountain and island were moved out of their places.

15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the
chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid
themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;

16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of
him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

Nothing much exciting going on in Kentucky this week. Worked on a few projects in WT (those were fun), tried to figure out how I was related to some of the GEDmatch peeps, stayed in as much as possible and stayed warm.

Temps were fluctuating here. Our snow from last week:

Kentucky Snow

Luckily, it is warming up going into the weekend - and the snow is gone. But - the freezing temps broke a gas line at mom's house next door, and they had to shut it off until Tuesday :(   And the generator, as it's tied into it. Thank goodness they have alternate ways to heat (though the house is still pretty chilly) and cook. I told her to come over and hang out when she wants - so we've had a couple of extra visits since then <3

Oh - and those tracks on the left... those were from deer walking through the yard. The more delightful ones were the rabbit tracks in mom's back yard. Those little guys really romped around!

Thank you David for hosting. And I hope that everyone has an awesome weekend!

I need to change my "Nothing much exciting going on" to a "WooHoo!"

I just noticed my G2G points - (100,400 points)

I really do love WikiTree, and the people here... I'm glad it shows!

Hi Mindy, WOW! Look at all the snow. Sure glad we do not have that snow. Congratulations on reaching the 100,000 + points. You're awesome!!!!

Thanks David!
That is a good picture of your snow. We haven't had that much snow in about 3 or more years here in Loudon, Tennessee. Also Congratulattions on reaching the 100,400 points I have more than that. You're awesome. So this week was awesome for me because of that. Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
We actually didn't have as much as usual, for Kentucky. I guess, as a Nevada girl, I'm just not used to it ;)

Thank you regarding points Linda. I'm glad you have more... it means that you love WikiTree also. I haven't been here for long, so it was nice to reach a personal milestone.

I'm still trying to get 'cousins' from Ancestry to join WikiTree AND GEDmatch. The world would be a better place, if it were all joined :D

I did find a new Ancestry cousin this week... fingers crossed, that I find the actual connection!
Hey Mindy, Congrats on the points!  It is so much fun to see people who are always trying to help get rewarded!
I am in several genealogy forums and sing the praises of WikiTree in all of them.  A day without WikiTree is dull and dreary!

Tonight I cooked dinner for my long time girlfriend, over 20 years, I made her Stuffed Pork Chops and Green Beans. I know that it is a long time to be in a relationship without getting married but it is complicated.
by Dale Byers G2G Astronaut (1.7m points)
Ah.... a soulmate. Nothing wrong with that. And YUM to stuffed pork chops. Haven't made those in ages, now that my girls are out on their own. How lucky is she?!
Pork chops and green beans sound good, My wife has a big pot of beef stew cooking for tomorrows lunch. Had homemade cheeseburgers for lunch today.
You're making me hungry Dale.
Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
Yum.   Lucky girlfriend.  Complicated.  That just means you are alive!

Sad week in Kentucky and Tennessee!!

A student opened fire at a rural southwestern Kentucky high school Tuesday morning, near Fort Campbell, killing two people and injuring 17 more, state authorities said.

The shooting suspect, a 15-year-old boy who attends Marshall County High School in Benton, was arrested at the scene, said Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin.

The boy, whom authorities have not yet identified, will be charged with two counts of murder and multiple counts of attempted murder.

Five who were wounded — all males ages 15-18,  were taken by five medical helicopters to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, TN mid-morning.

In the wake of tragedy, residents of Marshall County and surrounding areas have organized vigils and prayer services in honor of the victims involved in the Marshall County High School mass shooting on Tuesday. They continued though the week and a major gathering will continue through the weekend. https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/2018/01/23/one-dead-multiple-injured-kentucky-high-school-school-shooting/1057156001/

In addition, a massive fire damaged an apartment complex displacing about 80 people in Bellevue, near Nashville, about 30 minutes from me. The fire burned 24 units and destroyed the apartment building, the fire department reported Tuesday. Then to top that off a huge fire happened today at a local address down the street from me. One person was killed and another person was injured.  My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of all involved and especially for the 1st responders who did their best during this great time of need.

On a lighter side....

Weather wise, NO SNOW. Temperatures were up and down all week. I have been doing my WikiTree duties everyday, and staying warm inside.  I do want to thank whomever nominated me to be among the candidates for 3 out of 11 categories for the first annual WikiTreer Awards! I was totally surprised to see my name on the list and hope they will reveal who did the nominating so I can thank them personally. The final results I understand will be announced on youtube during the lst annual WikiTree awards show 10 Feb, 2018 at 3pm. https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/547687/1st-annual-wikitree-awards-show. Congratulations to all the nominees and can't wait to hear and see the end results!!

by Dorothy Barry G2G Astronaut (2.7m points)
Thank you, Dorothy, for the update on what has happened in your area. It is heartbreaking news anytime there is a school shooting resulting in injury or death. See you at the WikiTree Awards Show!
Yes thank you Dorothy for those updates I did not know about over near your though but I knew about Kentucky High School shooting. Will the put a list of the winners on G2G for those who don't look at youtube stuff. I agree with David. Congrualations on election of 3 awards out of 11.  Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.

Thanks David and Linda. It is heartbreaking and the healing will take a long time to come for all involved, including family friends and even the school system. Clarification though Linda, I just got "nominated", not elected for 3 awards. (But that is an honor in itself).  I still am in competition with 4 others to actually win, in each of those!!

I've been following that Dorothy. It's sad, the state that the current generation is in. My heartfelt prayers for the families...

From Kentucky.
Sending loads of prayers to your state and those in it.

Dorothy you are a shining light.  You and your can do attitude and strong moral core will help your community get through this.  When there is darkness bring some light.
Thank you Laura for your compliment!! Actually it takes one to know one and you are also a shining light and a good friend!
Thanks Dorothy!   Hugs and good wishes coming your way!

I am here this week has been more calmer than last week. I am glad. I might be moving this year or next year up to my sisters old house beside her new one on their property. Been a crazy month. I've had contact with 4 cousins, my half brother, and found out my paternal grandmother died on Nov 20, 2016 from a cousin today. Oddly enough I am not the PM of my grandmother and had to petition him to have it opened.

Add this to finding my uncle on google 6 months after he died and my father on Ancestry 3 years after he died. What a family.
by Steven Tibbetts G2G6 Pilot (409k points)
Wow! With all the difficulties you have had with your family... I'm so glad you found those cousins! And the half brother. So sorry for the loss of the grandmother.
Steven so sorry they have not had the privilege as we have of getting to know you and like you!   Families can be complicated.
Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat. Laura I agree with you about families can be complicated.

Today is....

NATIONAL SEED SWAP DAY

The seed swap is a fundamental part of human history. Seeds were one of the first commodities valued and traded. Today, modern gardeners collect and exchange seeds for many reasons ranging from cultivating rare, heirloom varieties to basic thrift. The exchange of seeds perpetuates biodiversity. It is an act of giving and the ultimate form of recycling.

HISTORY

The first annual Washington Gardener Magazine Seed Exchange was held in Washington, DC, on January 26, 2006. Kathy Jentz, the editor/publisher of the magazine had the last Saturday of January named an official holiday and National Seed Swap Day was born. After that event’s success, seed swaps in other cities across the nation have joined in celebrating National Seed Swap Day each year on (or around*) the last Saturday in January.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Exchange seeds with friends, attend a local seed swap or help organize one. Here are all the Seed Swaps/Seed Exchanges taking place on or around National Seed Swap Day in 2018:  http://seedswapday.blogspot.com/

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
My wife saves the seeds from flowers, plants in our yard and recycles them into new flowers and plants in the spring.
Wow what a great idea!
David, I do too, but now my garage has many envelopes and small containers, usually with the common name hastily labeling it. I'd be no one to steward seeds, but I love putting them in the earth to see what comes up. Some have been there for a coupla decades.

My plans for today is to organize the files of sources I have for the genealogy program I am starting Tuesday, Monday is busy. I am also planning on getting  one of the "new" computers working better on the internet, it is on my new desk.
by Dale Byers G2G Astronaut (1.7m points)
Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat. I wish your luck.
Good luck Dale! Hope your organising has been going well and the new genealogy program goes even better. Sounds like you'll be all set up!

Wow, time to take a break from today's source-athon!!! My head is swimming. There are reasons some of the unsourced are leftovers. Some profiles are easy, just do a family search. Some are crazy mixed up profiles, nothing matches. Even the easy ones I sometimes try to go further and connect to trees. Since I started by looking at unsourced in family names, of course making sure they are linked comes up, no credit for that.

23 and me offered an upgrade to the health reports for around 69 dollars about half the normal price. The previous deals were over 100. So of course, how can you resist. It was actually interesting. I was happy they didn't find Alzheimers or Parkinson's, but they did find the lactose intolerance. They did find a couple things, one was something my father had, oops.
by Sue Hall G2G6 Pilot (168k points)
Thank you, Sue, for sourcing unsourced profiles.
Sue for about $5 or $7 (I can't remember which) you can upload your raw DNA to Promethease  Here is an article with the link

https://dna-explained.com/2013/12/30/promethease-genetic-health-information-alternative/

I found it to be very interesting.  Mine was good news a whole lot of good and just a small amount of possible issues and so far none of those have really materialized in a medically relevant way.

I love finding sources.  Unfortunately I was in sales tax Hell for the past month and could not do some of the fun WikiTree things I like to do.

My Aunt who is 86 keeps telling me the only things you have to do is pay taxes and die...  everything else is negotiable!
Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat. Ditto to what David said Sue.
I wish Id been amongst the crew. I will get brave someday about things I don't know how to do yet, quite.
