The date of 1770 is incorrect. It comes from Ancestry Data Collection Records, which are just a summary of the family trees on Ancestry.

These sources list the marriage 10 years later: (listed on Libby's FindAGrave memorial).

If you have established that the dates are correct, then it is highly possible. The age of marriage was lower in some places and at some times in history. I have the sister of an ancestor of mine in colonial New South Wales, who married at 12. To us, it is horrific, but then some of our practices would be equally abhorrent to them.

In the UK, males were allowed to marry at 14 and females at 12 right up until 1929.
That's a good point Susan! I almost never trust birth years on marriage certificates without other documentation, because people often lied about their ages. My grandmother was born in 1907 and married at 15 -- she fudged her birth year on her marriage certificate. Also, my aunt was born in 1945 and married at 14 -- again she fudged her birth year. Both of these instances were in Ohio.
