How can I merge the "orphaned" David Fruits-15 into David Fruits-16 in my tree?

I have proposed the merge of Fruit-16 into Fruit-15. Let us know here if you run into any problems completing it.

Merges need to go from the higher number to the lower. The merge process allows the carry-over of information from both profiles into the final profile. Start the merge process (Add tab > Matches & Merges) then list Fruits-16 in the top space and Fruits-15 in the bottom. Since that is an orphaned profile the merge should proceed right away.

I think you have to adopt David Fruits-15 before you can merge his profile.
