meaning of S.H.

while reviewing a map of new york in 1866 i found several abbreveations S.H. with a number following. ex: S.H. 15. official map abbreveations it means a summer house. would these be like shelters on hiking trails today?

My assumption is that this is a country house owned by a city dweller and used by their family during the summer months.

If this is a map of New York City,  then my guess is it stands for School House #15. Public schools are still numbered rather than named in NYC but now it would be P.S 15 (Public School #15), for example, instead of S.H..

this map is in the Town of Broome in Schoharie County, New York. Southwest of the capital of Albany. It was and still is hilly and very rural.
Exactly the kind of place where 19th-century city dwellers with financial wherewithal might have maintained a summer house.
