I believe I have learned more by working with this project than I would have by myself.

With the weekly challenges, one concentrates on one particular suggestion which gives one the opportunity to truly figure out what to look for when making corrections. By the end of the week, one has the knowledge and confidence to make a huge difference towards the health of our shared tree.

I have made mistakes on gender when entering persons. Many have been "corrected" by data doctors trying to help. However seldom do the people doing the "fixing" bother to edit the biography to reflect the gender correction.

I would rather have them left for me to correct if the job is done incompletely. It would be great if the "data doctors" received proper training prior to being set loose.

To keep the data doctors away, you can go to the drop down, Suggestions, and correct all the mistakes in your tree yourself.

So, how are Data Doctors different from Sourcing?

When I am making these corrections I avoid tampering with the bio, especially if it appears to be thoughtfully done.  It's one thing to change a gender in a box. It's another to edit someone's work.

The bio should be checked before making a gender change or anything else, since there can be notes to indicate why a gender is set one way.  If no notes, the bio should still be checked when gender is changed, so it doesn’t say ‘he’ or ‘she’ which is now opposite of gender.

May I join the Data Doctors?  A few times each week, for the past several weeks, I've been clearing (mostly) simpler errors in the "suggestions for relatives" list.  I've mainly worked on orphaned profiles; when there is a profile manager, I'm treading very carefully, trying to follow protocol and not ruffle feathers.  With time and experience, I hope to be able to work on more challenging errors.   ~ Karen
