Hi Ken through scottish and English Select index I found Thomas 1626 son James 1651 gson George 1702 ggson Edward who lived in and married a Isabell Franridge1766 in Cumberland so there is a connection and there could be others.
Many Thanks Alan that is very interesting his son was James "Long Gun: Harkness Captain and John Harkness also his son John Harkness born in Dalgarno in Dumfries-shire, Scotland 1664 and died in Massachusetts USA in 1664 that is where my DNA connection comes in with the decedents of the family in the USA, looks like I am going to do some more work on this side I will keep working to match up the DNA to the family tree.

Many Thanks for your help.

Ken

Ken,

Did you have more information on your family line in the US?  I have a number of Harkness that came to the US in 1911.  Let me know.

Hi Ken, My branch of the Harkness family lived in Kirkandrews on Esk.  My great grandfather was James Harkness (1832 - 1882).  His siblings were Janet, Jane, Margaret and John - and I have visited their graves.  John was married in Kirkandrews on Esk and James was a witness at the wedding.  Many researchers are unaware of James's existence. Their father was Andrew Harkness who died in 1836 at the age of 47, leaving a pauper widow and young family who were then (it seems certain) split up. Andrew is buried in the same grave as his parents at Old Kirkconnel churchyard on Springkells estate near Annan.  Thomas was his father (born 1744) and his father in turn was George, son of Captain James.  George is buried at Tower of Sark which is only 5 or 6 miles from Kirkandrews on Esk. I have visited all these locations. I hope this helps.

Hello,

My mother's family, the Wrights, also came from Kirkandrews on Esk also and my g-g-grandmother was Jane Harkness, born 1820.
