Hi All

Looking for any connections to a young relative born about 1840 and possibly died young in child birth. McCoy-5073 She is the daughter of my G,G,Grandfather John McCoy and Mary Gadys/ McCoy. Arriving in Carleton County Ontario Canada around 1838 from N. Ireland. I believe she married a Lackey/Lackie possibly Charles. The family lived two farms away from the McCoy family. They adopted Eliza Jane Lackey. She is in the 1851 census some times spelt as McKoy. And appears again in the 1861 census as Jane Lackey at home with the McCoy's then all records are lost? I am at a brick wall with most of the records of the time not available to the public?? Any help would be appreciated.

My G-G-G Lackey was the Lackey (father of Charles, whom you have mentioned) that lived 2 farms away. My records indicate that Charles may have been married twice, the second time in 1881. You state that Mary Jane may have died in child birth.

I would like to suggest an unsubstantiated  theory that perhaps Charles and Mary Jane were married and she died as you say in childbirth, Charles remarrying later in life.

As for why she was at her parents during the Census of 1861, if she was expecting a baby, she may have gone to her parents house so that her mother could help with the birth. This was a common practice at that time if your parents lived nearby. Charles might not have been there at the time for various reasons. I know that this was the case in the birth of my own mother 70 some years later.

I also noticed that the 1861 Census form was blank under the headings of married / widowed.

Mary Jane McCoy, Born aug 22 1825 Married 15 December 1846 to Alexander T Gieger. This is what our family has on her. But I have John McCoy born in 1763 in PA and Mary Eberman born in 1771 in PA as parents with her born in what is now known as Boutbon and Nicholas Kentucky.

am I contributing to the wrong Mary Jane McCoy with the wrong father John?
