Can someone who is Pre-1500 Certified merge these two profiles?

I think you should add the tag Sweden, Norway and EuroAristo to your question as well.

As I have run into this specific gedcom importer (of Persson-516) before I know that they many, many, many times are just ancestry trees linked to each others with no research at all, sometimes it is just all rubbish with places that don't exist.

Therefore I adopted the profile and will go ahead and do the merge but what to do with the parents of the other profile? In the Swedish text under "note" there is some reference of him paying taxes from 1405 and after. It also says that nothing is known about his parents/heritage. Checking Swedish Wikipedia confirms that fact, no new researchs seems to be known.

I will simply remove the link to the parents and make a note in the profile of doing so and why if no-one else suggests anything else.

I also guess he should be Norwegian.. at this time in history the province Jämtland would have belonged to Norway I think.

Something odd happened during the merge though...

I marked his parents as uncertain and they were not linked to the new profile anymore???

I thought they would remain as his parents, but marked as uncertain, it was not my intent to disconnect them at this stage. I'm so afraid of losing information with this new merge system I usually don't edit the text at all until afterwards, then I know it will be found under changes.

Looks to me that Per Nilsson could be the missing link between Nils Hallsteinsson and Karl Persson. And, as stated in WikiPedia et cetera, these older generations are disputed, Karl being the first one whose existence experts agree on.

Maggie, You probably merged into the profile that did not have parents. You have to change the bullets for different facts if you want some info from the profile that is being merged away to be used in the profile that will stay.

Yes, that was probably what happened. It's only the big text field that gets info from both merger profiles.

Quite frankly, I'm not in the mood to sort this family out at this moment and will leave it as it is to let the managers take responsibility for editing it.

Thanks, I will be extra careful in the future... Not fond of the new system where errors is so easily made, no note in the changes either that the parents had been disconnected.

Oh, Hov in Århus Denmark or Hov in Hackås Jämtland - what does that matter to an ancestor collector like W-A, clicking on all green leaves at Ancestry and trusting all Auto-fill suggestions for the location fields.

But I can very well see that you don't need another mess, made by others, to clean up.

The further back you go, the harder it is to find original sources or definitive proof, as you put it. It is about knowing the history and reliability of the publications you use.

That is why you should never make changes in pre-1500 profiles without knowing the particular era and area.
