How to correct an incorrect surname when the real surname is unknown

There has been a myth that a Jacob Harley, earl of oxford was the common law partner of Mary Adkins. I have researched the Harley family and I have not found a Jacob Harley ever existed. The Harley's title was Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer which began with Robert Harley. There is new YDNA evidence to also disprove the Harley name. Additional DNA evidence is needed to confirm the true family line. I had been hoping to have the true identification before changing the information. I;m still waiting to learn of the real identification. How is the best way to handle this?
