My 15 yr brick wall - my great grandmother, Indiana Raney. Anyone want to put eyeballs on it for me?

Question

Indiana Raney, born 21 May 1851 in Tennessee, died 8 Sep 1895 in Norwood, Wright, Missouri, is my great grandmother. I have been searching for her parents for over 15 years. I need fresh eyes.

I have put all that I know about her and possible connections on her profile. I am hoping someone is feeling like playing detective and lending me some thoughts!

Being a relative newbie to WikiTree, I have to say this is the most giving, collaborative place I have encountered! Yes, I am using flattery as motivation... ;-)

I am a descendent of Aaron & Levi Raney from Missouri. I would be happy to compare information about the Raney family.

At one point, there were 4 "Con's" (Con Rads and Con Rods) & 3 Aaron Raney's all living in the Wright Co, Missouri area. Some were related and some were not.

I disagree with G. Bartomeo's suggestion to tell someone to stuff it. That would put them on the defense and they would be less likely to work with you. I find you get more flies with honey than vinegar. :)

Which I know has information on Rainey families in Virginia among others, but doesn't look like it can be browsed unless you are on site at a FHL location.

For my money that young lady's entry does read as "Indiana" rather than Judiann but there's not a poll option. ;)

Thanks for confirming that name for me Dina! I was reading all the Raney's in Arkansas because her name wasn't coming up. Back on the hunt!

One is listed 1860 Census,Tennessee,this born abt 1857.

Have you tried looking through her uncle Conrad? You have him in the 1880 Census for her, her living with him. While it doesn't give you Indiana's father's name or mother's name, it might give you the rest of her father's line.

Conrad was living in 1860 with a woman named Jane Rainey (Raney, maybe?) who was 30 years older than him.

Jane, in turn, was living with her husband Archibald Raney in 1850 at Division Number One, Pulaski County, Kentucky. Ancestry has Jane (Jenny Strader) marrying Archibald on 25 Dec 1811 in Logan County, Kentucky. (Source Ancestry: Ancestry.com. Kentucky, Compiled Marriages, 1802-1850 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 1997. Source Original: Dodd, Jordan, Comp.. Kentucky Marriages to 1850. Electronic transcription of marriage records held by the individual counties in Kentucky.) This one family tree on Ancestry lists some of their children.

Look it over, I think it might be the right path.

Thanks, G., but I don't have an Ancestry account. I had at one point got looking into Conrad, but was told by some Raney "authorities" that this was a different Conrad than the one in Missouri. I am going to start following Conrad's path. I just downloaded all the Conrad Raney death certificates form Wright County, Missouri, There are several.

In my opinion, unless these Raney "authorities" can show you sourced proof or direct you to it, they should stuff it and you should pursue any leads you can.

The information from the marriage record on Ancestry:

• Groom: Archibald Raney
• Bride: Jenny Strader
• Marriage Date: 25 Dec 1811
• Marriage Place: Logan, Kentucky, USA

The tree information may be incorrect, but there's usually a kernel of truth in these even if they're mostly wrong. The information from a different family tree I linked on Ancestry, listing the children of Jane "Jenny" Strader (daughter of Conrad/Konrad Strader and Nancy Laurence/Lawrence) and Archibald Raney (son of James Ryan Raney and Lydia ?):

• James Raney (b. 1814, d. ?)
• Levi Raney (b. 1822, d. 1875)
• Rodon Raney (b. 1824, d. 1840)
• Aaron Raney (b. 1826, d. 1889)
• Elizabeth Raney (b. 1827, d. ?)
• Mary Ann Raney (b. 1836, d. 1858)

Thanks for the info, G. I have long believed there is a connection with Conrad, the uncle, and the Archibald Raney family. Conrad is enumerated in 1880 between the sons, Aaron and Levi. And Aaron and Levi both name sons variations of Conrad (Con Rod, Con). The search continues!

a 1970 census with a 17 year old female M I Rainy (I've had lots of records flip the first and middle names)

You have her birth year as 1851, but if that's her 1860 record, she's 3 in 1860. That means she'd be born in about 1857, which may be throwing your search off. I also agree it looks like Indiana written.
