My heritage is Caddo, Choctaw, and Chickasaw. A grandmother walked the Trail of Tears and lost a child along the way. They were held in stockades and sustained by the renegade Apache hunters throwing game over the walls at night. Although we were given traditional names, we were discouraged from learning the language, and encouraged to assimilate by our grandmother because “the future is the way of the white man.” I have my grandfater’s Allotment document although the land has passed out of family hands. Grandma may have been right, that the future belonged to the way of the white man, but I wish I had been allowed to understand more of the ways of our tribes. I will add what I know of my family (too little) and our tribes. I may not be able to contribute much, but I will contribute what I can. I would love to be a part of all the Project activities as muc as possible. As soon as I am able to have the allotment scanned, I will post it, if anyone is interested. My children are registered with my deceased husband’s tribe, Mashantucket Pequot and are quite knowledgeable about Pequot and other nearby tribes. I live inSan Diego, CA and have many friends in this area who are Kumeyaay and Yaqui. I am happy to help with any research I can on many tribes in SoCal/Mexico, OK, TX, LA, CT, RI, and other New England tribes.
