The Native Americans Project is working to identify and add Native American profiles to WikiTree, weed out the mythological profiles that are already on WikiTree and accurately source existing profiles using tribal narratives and traditional genealogical sources.

Please join us! The Native American Project, associated with The First Peoples Project.

What can you do to help? Add your lines back and connect them to existing lines. You can also add yourself to the Project Tasks list and jump in with both feet!

Hello,

I'm interested in joining this project. Supposedly, I am part Cherokee on my mothers side.  Was told that her father was born on the reservation but have not been able to find documentation.
I am also interested in joining group. I am of native descent albeit way back but still resonates deep within my heart
Shirley, how can I best nominate profiles to be handled by the project?  There are some from Acadia that are candidates.
Hi. I would like to join your project.  My Grandfather has some type of Native American line and I can't find them.
I recognize the Womack name from families in Stilwell, Adair County, Ok
My Grandfather is on one of those Mythical Lines.  He lining up on Big Oak Cornstalk. Please read his profile and let me know what you think.  I removed Big Oak from father of John Woodall.

First time on the site and love it.  Would like to join this project.  I have a brick wall with a potential Wampanoag direct descendent.  Willing to help others with tribes in Massachusetts, New England and Rhode Island.  Can someone please help me with what I am supposed to do next.  A lot of information is out here and its hard to figure out where to go next

To anyone in this thread still interested but not yet badged for the Native Americans project, please see this new thread:

https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/926943/are-you-researching-native-americans

I found a story about Native Americans I put story in profile but might want to put under a subject matter like personal stories. My research shows a connection to sizemores they were denied access to Cherokee but there are some evidence that shows they may have been from a different tribe and had error in the tribes filed. It controversial. Some are sure they natives others say no. I do know family goes to man named Chief Goldenhawk Sizemore. Some of this family did get tribal rights.

Thanks, Billie.  Just be sure to provide source information so that others reading your text can find the source themselves. Thanks so much.

(ref #4) **Written in French- so someone who can translate to English really should try to help with this if they can, simple words translated wrong can make a huge difference in meanings.

*(this Thesis involves some of the originally named as Acadian Families (by Acadian type organizations and groups around the net)  pgs. 72,73,74 table shows many of 1st who arrived and who they married, weren't "French"  just giving as another resource aid, may answer questions for some who have't been able to find their children/Ancestors within Dictionaires of Acadians, if they married non-french many were not listed within these books, and there are genealogists that refuse to connect these children who married outside of French to their actual families...NOT SAYING this is Happening on Wikitree...Just saying have had this happen myself elsewhere and others have as well.

Hi. I just found the Woodall name in Alabama under the tribal pages. Close to the same years as my grandfather and same area.  I will be checking deeper into this.

Thank you very much

Howdy! I'm interested to join this group and help find my connection to the Cherokee tribe. My mother says it's either her great-grandmother or great-great grandmother on her father's side. I hope I can help with other profiles as well.

Hi, I am new here and was looking for Hadleys with Indian connections and I just found my first one here ...
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Stuart-_Hollinger-1

I have put the info I have found so far on the profile. Can you please tell me if or how we mark they profile as having Indian connections?

Also can I please get a Native American project badge ? Thanks
by N Gauthier G2G6 Pilot (293k points)
I have awarded you the Native Americans Project Badge, Your best bet for getting acknowledgment of the Native American ancestry for Carolina Stuart-Hollinger is to document her parents, grandparents, etc., to see if they link up.

Welcome!

Can someone add me to the Native Americans project?  I’ve been working in the background for quite a while and have recently come back to Wikitree.  I am a citizen of Cherokee Nation, but I live in Virginia and also have interest in Virginia tribes.

has anyone found any info. of native american heritage from the ogle or rogers family line?
by Billy Ogle G2G Crew (320 points)
We’d need a lot more information to answer that question.  The best thing to do is keep building your tree back as far as you can document.  Then, if someone lived at a time and place where there were Native Americans living, you start looking for connections.

I am apparently a direct descendant of Grace Springer of the Powhatan (Pocahontas' sister) and

John William Vaughan (1596-1664)

Grace and Pocahontas were apparently the daughters of Chief Wahunsunacawh, who has ancestors born as early as 1389 listed on my family tree at FamilySearch.org I'm curious about the sources of information for such early Americans.
by Living Vaughan G2G6 Mach 2 (27.5k points)
I’m sorry, but Grace appears to be a mishmash of myths, born in Pennsylvania, named “Powhatan,”  claimed as Cherokee. None of those are correct.   Pocahontas has only one possible sister, a woman recorded by the English as “Cleopatra.”  The Powhatan lived in Virginia, the Cherokee hundreds of miles away across the Great Smoky Mountains.    It looks like her profile needs a lot of help. The John Vaughn who came to Jamestown in 1619 is not recorded with a wife named Grace or any children.
So I'm correct in assuming that stone-age savages in the 1600s had no way of knowing who their ancestors were in the 1300s?
That’s correct.  There are no records of family connections for any southeastern tribes before European arrival.   Europeans weren’t particularly interested in native familes or relationships so usually only mentioned prominent men.  Many southeastern tribes practiced matrilineal descent and associated by clans, not fathers, and many avoided any mention of someone who had died.

There is an incredible amount of mythical ‘Native American genealogy’ on the Internet.  There’s also the fact that everybody in Virginia in 1907 wanted to claim Pocahontas as their ancestor and a lot of bogus genealogies were created then to oblige them.

While Grace is certainly interesting, it's Grace's mother Nonoma that takes the cake, and prizes for records broken, and deserves a special memorial!

Just look at her accomplishments:

  • 69 children!  Wow!  And in only her 47 years!
  • No slouch here - she started before she was even born, had 17 children before her own birth!
  • A busy childhood - she bare 10 more children!
  • Then she went on a tear, with 17 children in a 5 year period!  Got to be a record!
  • She went on to have many more children, before she died, wore out.
  • But she still had enough energy to have one more 12 years after she died!  A chief no less!
To see her 'accomplishments', see John and Grace's page on FamilySearch, and check her mother Nonoma.
She even gave birth to her own husband!  I thought the lady I found with 26 children was an overachiever, but she doesn’t even make the JV team by these standards.  Fortunately for all of us, although there are two Nonomas on Wikitree, she is marked as nonexistent and has only one child.

I am interested in joining this project. Per Ancestry, April Tikami Hop is my 7th Great Grandmother. I am interested in Native American colonial ties and connections in Georgia, SC, NC and Virginia. Thank you.

April Tikami Hop (1686 - 1744)
7th great-grandmother
Sibbel Barnes Barns (1700 - 1779)
Daughter of April Tikami Hop
Richard Kirkland (1765 - 1804)
Son of Elizabeth Sibbell 'Choctow' 'Grosse' Odom
by Laura Harris Gascogne G2G1 (1.0k points)
Laura, you might want to do some more research on those ancestors.  “April Hop” is mythical and there is no evidence that either Sybil or Elizabeth had any Native American connection.

I would like to join this group please.  I have recently discovered that [[Manitouabeouich-9|Marie Manitouabeouich]] is my 8th g-grandmother.  I also have purchased the downloaded versions of the Gail Morin First Families books (only 1, 2, 3), Unfortunately this means i can only work one profile at a time as working on readers is not easy.  So may as well put this work to good use.

Good morning.

I've around 4.4%, perhaps more, of native american heredity coming from my maternal and paternal branchs. The greatest percentage come from my paternal branch. I want to know what are my native american origins.

Friendly.

by Manuel Mahé G2G3 (3.3k points)
Hi Manuel,

That's interesting.  Your pedigree chart looks very very French.  You might want to start a separate thread asking for specific help in understanding your DNA results. Be sure to add tags DNA and Native_Americans.
You seem not interested about native american lines outdoor. I'm not interested about your mentality.

Good luck.

manuel
My apologies if I miscommunicated. Let me try to be clearer: I looked at your pedigree chart here on Wikitree and noticed how many French ancestors you have-- and didn't see an obvious place for Native American DNA to come into it. So, yes, you have an interesting challenge.

Since you posted here to the Native American project thread, I assumed you were seeking help in figuring out where that DNA might enter your tree. I suggested that you start a separate g2g thread so you could get better attention to your question (if indeed you have one).

But if I misunderstood, my apologies.
In the side from my father, I've just less 0.4% of french origins and in the side from my mother only 0.1%. It's just that I've seeking help for to know where that native american DNA might enter in my tree. I don't like the term "frenchie". I don't feel french with my heredity. I've been vexed about your answer because we have  a lot of problems to be with those origins because people don't know the pride to be somewhere not like all people. Where I live, was some militaries of the western company and the mentality is staying through the centuries towards the native americans. What's the program of professional reintegration in France? Just to do some places like reservations!

I accept your appologies.

I would love to find more information on a possible ancestor named Robin Moytoy Judd. Cherokee daughter of a chief.

Robin Ostenaco "Ostenaco, Do Yo Sti" Judd formerly Moytoy akaCherokee

by Jewli Judd G2G1 (1.7k points)
Jewli, her profile is here:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Moytoy-116

She appears to be fictional. The chief had no such daughter and there is no proof that Rowland Judd had a Native American wife.  See his profile and the g2g discussion attached to it:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Judd-64
SORRY but the Moytoy name is a myth and from many researchers state it may have been a title given to the Tribal leaders or the men by the Europeans.

My wife is 1/64th Cherokee and I can easily see that when she is angry at me. wink I think my daughter is 1/128th Cherokee, and they both have their blue tribal citizenship cards.

I find the research in this area both difficult and very interesting. Her ancestor is Nancy Ward.

by Billy Dunn G2G6 (9.4k points)
David Hampton’s books are excellent sources for Nancy Ward’s descendants.  Everything is documented.
Are you interested in joining the Native Americans Project? If so, let me know and I'll award you the badge.
Yes I am. And I think I may have a brick wall according to family stories. Finding my wife’s link to Nancy Ward was probably far easier than many others due to her notoriety. This one might be a challenge. Thank you!
Welcome to the project! The more researchers, the more information we get.

Hello,

I would like to join the project. I have found one line of Native American Ancestors on my paternal side but i am looking for possibly two other on my maternal side. The stories passed down are that my great grandmother Daisy Womack was possibly half Native American and so was her husband Buster Crigg. I can not find anything relating to her mother who was said to be Sarah Reed who married Robert Polk Womack. I do not know the names of Buster's parents and have yet to find any sources that would give me this information. Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

William, thanks for your interest in the Native Americans project. What aspect are you interested in? We have many sub areas of interest -- for example, regional ones like New England tribes, Virginia tribes, etc. or specific tribes such as Shawnee or Cherokee, etc.  We also have a cross-cutting area that deals with mosty 20th/21st-century/Internet-introduced myths about Native American genealogy.

What's your particular interest?

My heritage is Caddo, Choctaw, and Chickasaw. A grandmother walked the Trail of Tears and lost a child along the way. They were held in stockades and sustained by the renegade Apache hunters throwing game over the walls at night. Although we were given traditional names, we were discouraged from learning the language, and encouraged to assimilate by our grandmother because “the future is the way of the white man.” I have my grandfater’s Allotment document although the land has passed out of family hands. Grandma may have been right, that the future belonged to the way of the white man, but I wish I had been allowed to understand more of the ways of our tribes. I will add what I know of my family (too little) and our tribes. I may not be able to contribute much, but I will contribute what I can. I would love to be a part of all the Project activities as muc as possible. As soon as I am able to have the allotment scanned, I will post it, if anyone is interested. My children are registered with my deceased husband’s tribe, Mashantucket Pequot and are quite knowledgeable about Pequot and other nearby tribes. I live inSan Diego, CA and have many friends in this area who are Kumeyaay and Yaqui. I am happy to help with any research I can on many tribes in SoCal/Mexico, OK, TX, LA, CT, RI, and other New England tribes.

I’m sorry, I’m not intending to spam the thread. I’ve answered this post a couple of times, I’ve added Native American Peoples to my followed tags, but I still don’t have a badge. I believe I’ve responded under two different e-mail addresses and wonder if that is why I haven’t received a badge? I’m not often able to post on here as genealogy is a real “rabbit hole” for me and so I have to limit my time pretty much to vacation times, but Retirement is coming up soon and then you won’t be able to beat me away with a stick!

Hi Pam, I'm sorry no one has gotten back to you sooner on this. There are certain requirements that must be met before you can be awarded the Native Americans Badge. You can find those requirements on the Native Americans Project Page. They include having made at least 100 contributions to the WikiTree database and successfully completed the Pre-1700 Quiz. Once you meet all the requirements, I will be happy to award you the Native Americans Badge.

Currently I'm working on many of the Metis Scrip Records, mainly NWT archival records) have been adding them to pages for the last few days, hope it helps

oh ya, I'm using Archives and Library Canada to find the records, but last night while bouncing around on some of my own Families i was in BAnQ Archives Quebec, and did a random search using just "mariages sauvages" and it brought up quite a few records as well from late 1600s and into 1700s involving French m. N8v, not sure if these links will work in here but this is where I'm at

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/lac-bac/results/arch?form=arch_adv&lang=eng&FormName=MIKAN+Advanced+Search&PageNum=1&SortSpec=score+desc&HighLightFields=title%2Cname&Language=eng&QueryParser=lac_mikan&Sources=mikan&Archives=&ShowForm=show&SearchIn_1=&SearchInText_1=Scrip&Operator_1=AND&SearchIn_2=&SearchInText_2=&Operator_2=AND&SearchIn_3=&SearchInText_3=&Media%5B%5D=&Level=&MaterialDateOperator=after&MaterialDate=&DigitalImages=&Source=&cainInd=&ResultCount=10

BAnQ- http://numerique.banq.qc.ca/resultats  (search as "tout" & "mariages sauvages")
Really helps a lot, Arora. The more sources we have for Native Americans and Canadian First Peoples, the better. Thanks for all your hard work.

I and my family are of the First People's aka Sauvage/Savage of Accadia et al, and Native Americans aka American Indians of the United States. I will be working on many profiles which fall under this category. Both sides of the border. My children are also of the Choctaw, through their father, Dennis Joseph Smedley of the line of Patriarch Reverend Joseph Smedley of the Choctaw. He is Enshrined in the Choctaw Constitution and the Oklahoma Baptist Hall of Fame. He built the Five Churches and Schools, and the First Black Congregation Church for his fellow Slaves and Indentured Servants.

I look forward to seeing the rest of you in the trees...

Yes I am, from what I've read in the link you have sent me, I fall into the category of Mythological.  I put this up awhile back but have edited it.  If you read you will understand what is going on.  I also have a space page that I've started on him now it is posted on his profile.  It shows Native DNA distribution in the family, so I am trying to trace it.  Although he wouldn't talk much when people were around, he would tell me stories when I was young, I didn't understand all of it. I'd like to know more about what he was talking about then
