Can an old published book from a family member be a source for info for a profile?

I cited a reference in a Family book that was published years ago, it gave helpful information for my tree.Another family member that is also working on this tree, who I don't know says I can not do that.It is not a source. So she took it off. When I give good sources she still complains or removes them, and tells me I don't know what I'm doing. It makes me want to stop using wiki tree. Please help.

Hello Teresa.

Of course the book is a source:

"A source is the identification of where you obtained information."

Communication between members is very important:

Please see also:

I use two folders in my research...Documents and Resources.  What I have and where I got it.  KISS!  it works for me at seventy three!

It's definitely a source, it just may not be a very good one: it depends on whether there is reason to suppose the author had solid grounds for their assertions, either because they themselves cited sources or because they were in a position to know.

For example if an author informed you of their own mother's maiden name, their claim would be pretty good evidence for her maiden name. If they said they had conclusive evidence that the family descended from Odin, it would not.

I think if the book in question cites credible, (and if possible verifiable) sources, it should be acceptable.

The flysheet of a Family bible that I have access to, holds valuable details of family events over many years and by a number of family member. It includes noting an earthquake at 4am; apparently the windows shook. This is an 1700 through 1800 document.(On Wikitree) This bible sheet provides more information than records. In my opinion this flysheet is a valid source and compliments other sources.

The book you hold seems to be a comparison of my family bible; if it affirms the record sources you have, then your book only adds value to your contributions.

Record your sources, including this book.

Now if you are the manager of the profile that is being obstructed, then  protect and tell your family member why.

You keep going, don't stop using Wikitree

Yes, it can.  Books of this type vary widely in quality.  Even a low quality source should not be removed until/unless replaced by a higher quality source that supports the same fact(s).  If you truly believe that this relative is removing legitimate sources, then you should probably review Help:Problems with Members.
