Hear ye, hear ye!

If you are interested in people who are famous, notable, noted, significant, important, historic, heroic, or otherwise fascinating, then the Notables Project might be for you!

The idea behind this post is for anyone who needs help with connecting Notables to the tree to post and ask for help.

Or if you just want to tell us whom you have successfully connected up.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Notables

Above is the Notables Project page where you can find unconnected Notables who have profiles and who need to be connected to the tree.

No theme this month - just any Notables who have a Wikipedia page.

You should be answering this on the August 2018 Notables thread....

https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/655727/notables-august-2018
I would like to help with notables project because we go back to royal lines of England and royal lines of Norway and Denmark according to thirty generations search. So I have been collecting books on our notable family members and read historical books on royal lines. Anne of Denmark is a cousin, Blanche of  Artois is my 21st great grandmother and her mother  is my 22nd great grandmother through a Queen Elizabeth Woodville.

Thanks,

Jennifer M. Brayton

Hello everyone, I have just taken over the management of the page of Thomas Collins, 8th President of Delaware, as he is in my family tree.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Collins-9226

I am hoping to start with him and fill in some early Delaware history.

Would love to join the Noteables team!

Thanks for the reminder!!

I am interested in this project
I am  interested  in joining  the  notable  project  Thank  You
Would like to join the Notables Project in order to contribute to the Slocum/Slocomb/Slocumbe family genealogy. My grandsons are descendants.  thanks!
Hello,

I would like to join the notables project to work at least at first specifically with Carroll Hall Shelby (Shelby-735) who was quite a renowned auto engineer and race driver responsible for cars like the Shelby Cobra.

Hi!

I'd like to join the Notable project so that I can contribute to several profiles that are ancestors of mine.  These include William Maclay and Samuel Maclay.

I'm not clear whether it's appropriate to apply for membership in this thread, or in the Sept-2018 thread, so I'll do both.  Hope that doesn't cause confusion.

Thank you!

David Potter

Hello! I'd like to join this project. I'm the profile manager for notable Hardy-170 (Samuel Hardy) and would love to build it out further with more sources.

Well - usually we have a separate Oscars question, but maybe we'll just put it in here, considering it's happening this weekend. Here are the nominees:

Laurie Metcalf (no current profile)

Octavia Spencer https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Spencer-8197 (Not Connected)

Profiles (if we have them) are listed above. If I've missed any profiles or you create one, please add them to the answer. Plenty of opportunities here to create new Notables or improve existing ones. If by the end of the ceremonies we don't have the winners connected, we can work on those to have all 4 winners connected to the tree. Thanks!

Great work Scott, and Thank you.

It's Oscar day tomorrow? Oh wow, I had no idea.

I don't watch TV any more. I watch Netflix and Youtube!!
They're believing that Allison Janney will win tonight, so it would be nice if we can get a profile spun up for her. If someone doesn't get it started before this afternoon or tonight, I'll get to it later.
Wow - both women - Frances McDormand is the other predicted winner. I'll see if I can't help out later. Got to run to church soon and won't have time before.
Allison Janney added and connected.
And Sam Rockwell is the first winner announced from these categories. He has a current profile and is connected to the tree, so +1 for us. :)
Added Frances McDormand, but she was adopted at a young age and does not know the names of her birth parents. Will see if a connection is possible through her husband, Joel Coen.
Allison Janney has won the best supporting actress Oscar for her role in "I, Tonya."
Frances McDormand and Gary Oldman were the other winners.

Frances will be near impossible to connect as she does not know her birth parents. I couldn't find any concrete information on her husband, who is one of the Coen Brothers.

Gary is not connected to the tree, but I'll take a look and see what I can come up with.
Do we want to cover directors, too?
That's a sorta yes sorta no question.

Yes - anyone who has won an Academy Award should be recognized for their award - there's no doubt about that. From the Special Effects Team, to Director, to anyone else who participated in making it. However...

No - I'm not currently or intentionally putting directors on my list, as the list is already pretty long and it would involve having to make it challenging to edit (it's already getting pretty big) or less meaningful where it currently shows mostly actors and a few others.

I've considered adding directors in the past and at the moment, I don't have all the actor categories covered from the beginning of the awards presentations, so my thought was until the actors category is nearly complete I probably won't make any other additions. But if we come across Directors, Sound, Special Effects, Writers, etc. who have won an Academy Award then we definitely should note it on their profiles and they'll show up in the appropriate category.

I've been thinking that I should go back through these Notables Monthly threads, and see how much progress has happened on the notables who have been mentioned. As it happens, Scott first suggested the idea a year ago this month, so it's been a year since these people were first discussed in this context. So here's a look at the notables who were discussed last year, and what needs to be done to raise each to the next level.

Notable Level Needed to Move to Next Level
Majel Barrett-Roddenberry Bronze Privacy set to be open, link to Wikidata added, more categories added.
Frank Sinatra Silver There are two census records mentioned (not linked), and his Find A Grave entry, but no birth record and no marriage records.
Harry Chapin Bronze Link to Wikidata added, categories added.
Hillary Clinton Bronze Notables project added as manager, link to Wikidata added, more categories added.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg Bronze Notables project added as manager, link to Wikidata added, categories added.

Barry Bonds Bronze Notables project added as manager, link to Wikidata added, categories added.

Is there any definition of the bronze and silver levels?
Majel will NOT be set to open. Scott and I have discussed this and the matter is settled

Robynne, the descriptions of the requirements for each level are on the Notables Project page, but in short:

Iron (People In Need of a WikiTree Profile) is for people who don't yet have a WikiTree profile. If you find somebody in this section who has a profile, please move them to the Bronze section.

Bronze (Notable Profiles in need of Notables Project markers) is for people who have a profile, but don't have the basics in place yet. If you find somebody in this section who has the Notables template applied, privacy set to Open if they're deceased, or Public if they're living (and has the Notables Project set as a profile manager if they're living), has links to both their Wikipedia and Wikidata entries (and Wikidata has their WikiTree ID added), and applicable categories applied, please move them to the Silver section.

Silver (Notable Profiles in need of Improvement) is for people whose profiles are more developed, but still not complete. If you find somebody in this section who has a narrative biography, multiple sources (especially birth, marriage, death, or census records, not just Wikipedia entries), at least one image, and they're connected to the main tree, please move them to the Gold section.

Gold (Notable Profiles - Connected!) is for profiles that are essentially complete. I haven't finished working all the way through the table yet, so if you find a profile here which is lacking something that's required for a lower level, please move them to the appropriate level so others know that there's some more work required.

Thanks Greg...
Had a quick look at the French notables listed there and needing a profile... It would be good to start profiles for Yves Saint-Laurent and the Michelin brothers. On the other hand, until Jean Dujardin hooks up with the offspring of a famous family, there is zero chance of connecting him. He's too young. I found no information on his parents, or on either of his notable wife and companion, or on Alexandra Lamy's past significant others.

I set up a tab on the WikiTree spreadsheet I created to keep track of this but I never got info or direction on how to set it up. Feel free to contact me.

Notables Tab

He's had 3 children, 2 spouses, and a partner. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_Dujardin

Or is this the wrong guy???

After attending high school, he went to work for the construction company of his father, Jacques Dujardin.

Oh yes, this is the right Jean Dujardin and I do have this info. However just the name and job of his father is not enough to start a profile IMO.

Jean - only have the first name of his father

His ex-wife, Gaëlle - no other info

His ex-wife, Alexandra Lamy - she has a notable sister, Audrey, and cousin (or their father's cousin - I'm not even sure) but without information on the parents I could only connect them together artificially; Alexandra has another notable ex-spouse, Thomas Jouannet, but I haven't found any info on his family.

Jean's current partner, Nathalie - i know she has siblings including a twin, but no info on parents.

So all we've got basically is a string of X was married to Y who was married to Z who is the sister of W who is in a relationship witth V. These people are all young enough that the information on their parents (who I guess are all alive) and even on their grand-parents is private. They may be notable but their birth families are completely private. So, not much genealogy to do.
So yeah. Tab for tracking notables? anyone in charge of this actually want to hit me up???

I've started Yves Saint Laurent, so he may be moved out of the iron section. No image yet as his Wikipedia page does not offer a portrait photograph free of rights, so one of the portrait drawings will have to used. Not connected yet but I'm working on it.

Steven, what is it exactly that you want to tracked? Is it something that can't be tracked on the existing notables page?

Thank you, Isabelle. I have moved Yves Saint Laurent to the Copper section.

I was told that one wasn't being updated anymore. And I have no clue how to add notables to it yet. I just figured a spreadsheet would be easier.

For example, Isaac Newton is listed as needing a profile but. Newton-17 is already there. So either it all needs to be updated or something. I'd be willing to help but I need to figure it out first.
Yves Saint Laurent is connected now.

Granted, I'm not updating the Notables Project page as often as people make changes in notable profiles (pesky little things like earning my pay, sleeping, and eating keep getting in the way -- if I could just break myself of the habits of eating, sleeping, and not freezing, there's no telling how much I could achieve), but yes, I am updating it when I can, and other people can and do update it, too.

The syntax for that page is the same as the syntax on any profile on WikiTree (although, granted, most profiles probably don't have tables on them), so you don't need to wait for me to make a change. I'm not sure what the permissions are on that page though. It's editable for me, but that might be because I'm a Notables Project member. If it's not editable for you, try asking for the badge.

Notables in the news recently:

  1. Yes, I do understand the absurdity of talking about a girl who died at the age of 2 having "descendants". Don't blame me, blame whatever editor at the Post who wrote such a fatuous headline.

I mentioned Lewis Gilbert a few days ago in the Feb Notables thread..
David Ogden Stiers of MASH fame also passed away this past week. Sad news - he was only 75 if I remember correctly.
Yes my husband spotted that on facebook and told me that yesterday. I was shocked, I would have hoped that he could have lived longer.

Charles Winchester III deserved to live longer!!  LOL

May he RIP - both David and Charles.

I have been working on Arthur Michell Ransome - the Author of The Swallows and Amazons Childrens Book series - for some months now - and today I was finally able to connect him to the global tree. The connection should go through tonight.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ransome-173

The connection is through Arthurs great uncle - Joseph Atkinson Ransome.

I have lots more siblings and family members to add, but the basic connection is now done!!

If perhaps someone can move him from the Not Connected section of the Notables project to the connected - but needs work section?? LOL

Thanks

I have moved Arthur Ransome from the Iron section down to the Silver Section. His biography could do with more work. He was accused of being a SPY at one point, just because he travelled around the USSR and married a Russian girl.
Woot! Good job!

Following up on a discussion with Eddie back in January (Weekend chat), Farrah Fawcett is finally connected. If we could have John McEnroe's profile liked to ex-wife Tatum O'Neal, he would be connected as well.

There's a notable I would dearly love to get some help with. Grace May North (who also used the pen name Carol Norton) wrote a bunch of books in the first half of the 20th century. (My personal favourite is Bobs, A Girl Detective. It's so much fun, I think somebody should turn it into a TV series.) I've tried for months to connect her to the main tree, but every lead I've followed turned into a brick wall. Maybe some fresh eyes on the problem would help.

Thanks, Eddie. Since I don't have a paid ancestry account, they won't let me see those documents, but I have tried hunting up "Northrup" in New York and still came up dry, so I don't know what's going on. It may require a trip to Utica and New York city to access the records in person.
Most libraries have the free library edition of Ancestry and when you find a source, on the bottom right, you see SEND DOCUMENT HOME. You can email yourself a copy, then open the doc at home in your own computer.

When there's an actual image, top right corner, green button SAVE, and you can email it to yourself.

The library ladies are very nice and helpful. Get your notes etc together, have a couple bucks in your pocket for lunch and soda pop.

French writer and feminist Simone de Beauvoir is now connected to the global tree.  Connecting her to the global tree was quite easy, as her great-great grandfather, Alexis Brasseur, already had a connected profile.  Most French notables are much more difficult to connect!  The connection actually runs through Belgium and Luxembourg, where the surname is common.

I'd like to thank Kyla H. for beginning the Brasseur lineage that led back to Alexis.  I had previously looked into Sartre's background (still not connected-the two were partners but never married), but apparently hadn't checked Simone's background until recently.

I would like to join the Notables Project as I'm trying to start project Finland and as a part of that decided to add profiles of all Finnish prsidents starting with President Sauli Niinistö.

That said, I wonder how to treat the wife of President CGE Mannerheim? She is from a high ranking family in Russia but was due to a divorce never first lady of Finland. Her Russian Wikipedia page says her father was prime minister of Russia. Shall I try to write her name and birth place (Moscow) in cyrillic letters and death location (Paris) in latin letters? I don't think she would meet the {{Notables}} criteria though.

by Juha Soini G2G6 Pilot (118k points)
I've awarded the badge to you for the project.

I also took a look at President CGE Mannerheim - it does not appear that his wife was "notable" for anything other than being his wife, so that would not typically make her a Notable. Some wives of high ranking officials or Notables become known for certain philanthropist activities, activist activities, or their own Notable behavior that can be used to justify their own notability, but at this point in time, I don't see any evidence of that for her. If you happen to come across any, please feel free to present it and we'll go from there.

As far as her name and birth place goes, we tend to be a mostly English speaking group, so while the use of Cyrillic is not a bad thing, we generally prefer to have English represented on the profile alongside any non-English information so that it can be easily interpreted by everyone around. As it relates to place names, since there's no way to put both in the field, I'd recommend English and you can perhaps do a dual English and Cyrillic (either full translation of all or just parts, like the place and people names) in the biography. Note these are just recommendations, as we are a collaborative group and try to find ways to enhance collaboration between each other as best we can.
I was merely thinking about the rule to use what they would have used themselves when I asked about the cyrillic alphabet. Will be glad to do it all in English as I don't know Russian at all. I agree that she is not notable by herself, and will have a normal profile when I get around to make one.
No worries - actually adding in some Cyrillic makes for a more authentic profile, so I'd encourage it if you can. When we were working on Tesla's profile and his family's profiles, we tried to add Cyrillic where we could to help show original naming conventions. In fact, the family tree we eventually found online was all in Cyrillic and I had to translate, even though I have about zero clue about how to interpret. Google was my best friend and helped me get through it.
I was thinking of repeating the name in cyrillic within the bio instead.

          Edit:typos
Sounds like a great approach, Juha!

I need help connecting the Crane family to the tree.  Sir Walter Crane https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Crane-5185, his sister Lucy and father Thomas were all notable artists in Art Deco England. I’m trying to find their connection to my family as the legend in our family is that they are related somehow. I remember my grandmother telling me this as well as my mother and aunts and uncles. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks.

by Deborah Talbot G2G6 Mach 6 (70.0k points)
According to your ancestry, your mothers Crane family comes from Lancashire. The artist Crane's family comes from Cheshire.

It may have just been wishful thinking on the part of one of your ancestors to be related to them.

As of now on Wikitree, I cannot see any ancestors in common - either by name or by location.

THat does not mean to say there is no connection. Just that I cannot see any right now.
That has been my thoughts too. I’ve been looking for 30 years and so far zip. Every time a relation asks if I’ve found the link I say no. Just thought I’d get another set of eyes looking for me. It’s not something I put a lot of effort on but the Walter, Lucy and Thomas Cranes should be documented because they are notable.
I’ve had another look at the Notable Cranes and the 1851 and 1861 census show Walter, Thomas and Lucy all born in Liverpool, Lancashire, which is where my Cranes are from. Their mother was from Cheshire and their siblings were born in Devon. So it looks like they moved around a bit.  Even if we are not related I intend to go through all the census records and fill out their biographies.
          Good luck with that!!

Are you in the Notables project? If no then request a badge - either send a PM to Scott Fulkerson (his name link is all over this thread so he should be easy for you to find him) - or ask in this thread. Then ask Scott Fulkerson to be put onto the trusted list for Christina, and you should be all set to go.
Not sure who is the manager of that profile, but you'll have to ask to be put onto the trusted list. If it's Notables, then I can add you to the trusted list. Sometimes it's not, and you'll have to work with whoever the current PM is for that profile. Let us know if you need assistance.
Sorry - wore out and didn't look. It's Notables - just ask to be put on the trusted list and it will be unlocked for you. All living Notables you have to ask to be added to the trusted list, since living Notables can't be fully open.
Thank  you Scott. I will do that.  I think while I'm at it I will just apply for a Notables badge since I do a lot of work on my own with notables.

Christina Aguilera is my Cousin on her Mother's side of the Family. I can help fill in any gaps if any help is needed.

Soon I believe that Malcolm Young of AC/DC needs too win a profile of the week he just died in November and. I think it would pop up high on search engines because he still only died so recently 11/18/2017. Just a thought , like why not popular profile view from someone who was and still is incredibly famous in publicity. XD

Academy Award winning actor Broderick Crawford should be connected to the global tree tonight once the links update. I couldn't find a good connection in his line, but was able to find one through his second wife, actress Joan Tabor. He was married to three different actresses, so this will connect all of them up at one time.

His was an interesting tree, as his LNAB was Pendergast, but Wikipedia didn't catch that and had me chasing rabbit holes. Once I figured this part out, the rest was just regular research. Kind of the same for Joan Tabor. Wikipedia showed her as just Joan Tabor, but records show her as Marilyn J Tabor, so it was a bit challenging to track her and her parents down. Once I got past those little details, I was fortunate to run into a piece of a tree that connected everything nicely (thank you Kay Sands!!). And only one goof on my part of a duplicate profile, but a merger should take care of that nicely.

I have FINALLY been able to connect Karen Carpenter to the Global tree. Her island was getting quite big - more than 50 profiles.

          Karen Carpenter

Carol Keeling sent me a path to follow - but that would not have happened if I had not added all the other family members first. Thank you Carol.

The connection will be through the wife of a second cousin to Karen and her brother Richard!! The connection should go through overnight.
