What's the best way to reach from America to Alsace-Lorraine to research the ancestry of surname "Hullar" or "Houlard"?

How do I best extend my search from America to Europe using WikiTree? What other free online resources, besides WikiTree might help with the specific tags enclosed?

You can go to Geneanet, a major European family tree site and do a name search, (use various spellings?) which will bring up any families with those names and where they are located. You might even find your own direct ancestor that someone has in their family tree.  All of the parish registers in the Bas-Rhin department (northern Alsace) are now digitized online at www.archives.bas-rhin.fr/registres-paroissiaux-et-documents-d-etat-civil/
Thank you so much Daniel, I'll check it out.

Here is the URL to a site that has trees and physical records for Alsace Lorraine Genealogy.

http://crhf.net/fr/index.php?t=bases&d=bases%2Fbiographies&c=biographies&f=selection&p=&order=uid&order2=1&motcle=&lieux=&nom1=Houllard&prenom1=&nom2=&prenom2=&ansup=&aninf=&motcle=    to run a query you need to have a first (prenom) and Last (patrynom or nomen)

I have placed a rosetta type stone of genealogical terms into the puzzle folder we use during the Weekend Chat with a translation of normal words seen in 8 languages.   Go to  https://www.dropbox.com/sh/rqo8mt2eobujwgd/AAAzB3IGNHqNKXBfdE985NBZa?dl=0

This will help you navigate records in French or any of the other languages.

You can also if running Chrome right click and select translate this page.

I checked 4 databases so far and while I found some similar names they were not Houllard or Hullar. I could not check the one above without more info.

This is the URL to the physical birth, marriage and death records for Moselle but you need to know the town.  Otherwise you are drilling through each town.    http://www.archives57.com/
I've also seen reference to sea-faring folk ("Hull"="Ship"-maybe even pirates!).
Thanks for all the helpful info. Now I need to carve out enough time, or delegate, to dive into some fun research!!!

Assuming you know the location in Alsace-Lorraine try the French Departmental Archive for the province.

Thank you George, I'll follow up on that.

There is a family Houlard, changed in US to Hullar, from Epping in the department Moselle. Although I imported this family in 2014 I have to admit that I have not gotten around to clean up this import. But starting with Epping you might be able to connect. www.archives57.com/index.php/recherches/archives-en-ligne

These are beautiful David...are they from church books in Epping(er)?
yes, the baptism record of your ancestor Jean Gaspar HOULAR comes from the church books of Epping (Eppingen is the German name).
