My great-great grandmother was a Cotterell from Ireland. I am not sure of the Cotterell spelling. She married a sea-captain, a Paul (?) Moore, and as a result was expelled from the family, who cut off all links. She moved to either Manchester or Bolton, where she worked in the cotton mills and married a Mulherrin. (My great grandmother was born May Mulherrin around 1885). Can anyone give me a clue as to where I could start looking in Ireland? The Cotterells were apparantly quite well-to-do, involved with horses, and also teachers. They were Catholics (we presume - the family on that side certainly were/are in later generations).
