Who was the William Stevenson who lived in Greene County,Tennessee in 1786?
In his ''Autobiography of the Reverend William Stevenson'', which is on line, first published in the ''New Orleans Christian Advocate'' in 1857,mentions that in 1792, he went with his cousin Stevenson Fowler to visit relatives he had never seen before who lived on the Nolichucky River which flows through Greene and Washington Counties,Tennessee. Unfortunately he doesn't mention the names of his relatives.There was a Robert Stevenson who there in 1782. A Robert Stevenson of Woodford County,Kentucky sold land to a James Guthery in Greene County,Tennessee in 1795. Robert's parents were John Stevenson and Martha Warwick who lived in Augusta County, Virginia. Another Stephenson in Greene County,Tennesse was Captain James Stephenson who also went by the surnames of "Stevenson" and "Stinson." James' military record has him born in Lancaster County,Pennsylvania in 1754.Before the war James Stephenson lived in Washington County,Tennessee and after the war, he lived in Greene County,Tennessee. He served as sheriff and county clerk. A James Stevenson was the county clerk on the document of Robert Stevenson of Woodford County,Kentucky selling land to James Guthery
The Reverend William Stevenson was born 1768 in South Carolina near a fort called Ninety-Six. His parents were James Stephenson and Elizabeth Fowler. He moved to York County,South Carolina where his grandfather David Stephenson had settled on Turkey Creek in the 1760's. My John Stephenson settled on Bullocks Creek in York County,South Carolina in 1760's. It is believed that David Stephenson was the David Stephenson who lived in Augusta County,Virginia. I believe my John Stephenson came from Augusta County,Virginia,but I have not proved that. The Reverend William Stevenson married Jane Campbell in Greene County,Tennessee in 1795.
