Seeking Chapman help

Question

My nearest brick walls are in my Chapman line, but I've seen family trees online that seem to have much less doubt on the subject, so I'm rather hoping there's some information out there that I've missed. Can anyone make any headway with the parents of George Chapman (Chapman-11324) or his possible grandfather John Chapman (Chapman-11439)? Thanks for any help!

Ooh thanks, that's encouraging. "St Ives Union" means he was born in the workhouse, I suppose? It seems likely economic disaster struck when Joseph's parents died.

Heh, I just decided to expand my comment to an answer and hide it. Sorry for the confusion. No, many registration districts had union in their names.

I think your identification of his parents as Joseph and Emma Breed is correct. I took his age at death of 39 (given in the GRO index) as correct which implies a birth in Q4 1867 - Q4 1868. The only qualifying George Chapman in Cambridgeshire was:

CHAPMAN, GEORGE	BREED
GRO Reference: 1868  D Quarter in SAINT IVES UNION Volume 03B  Page 264

 

I checked that the St. Ives registration district covered Over. This birth also fits perfectly with the ages of 2 and 12 in the censuses.

No it's free but you need to register. It's the same dataset as the FreeBMD index but they include mothers' maiden names and death ages from the start. https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp
