First, it is important to note that GEDCOM 'uploads' are no longer supported in WikiTree rather they now go through the GEDCOMpare process, where each individual record would need to be matched or rejected to suggested profiles. This task can be quite and undertaking, especially if you are not familiar with the data, the data file is large (many individual profiles), or you are new to WikiTree in general.
Next, is the general issue with Ancestry.com trees, especially if they are an amalgamation of multiple user contributed trees. Ancestry trees are generally unsourced (at least not efficiently) and rarely carry over sustainable data that would align with WikiTree goals (re: sourcing) - Feel free to ask me how I know...
With that information out of the way, and if you would like to continue, the following information is important to keep in mind on the GEDCOMpare process:
- Compare your tree with our shared tree. We show you the most likely matches. This can be used by itself — a handy way to see if anyone in your family is already on WikiTree.
- Add & edit profiles on our shared tree using your GEDCOM. You add people one at a time after confirming or rejecting suggested matches.
Once this is done, the WikiTree software will prepare a GEDCOMpare report that will determine if any suggested matches are made with existing profiles. Once the report is ready, you will receive an email notification with a link to the GEDCOMpare report, where you can review the suggested matches, either marking them as matches or rejecting the matches if they represent different people.
Once this process is completed for every individual, you will enable the 'Add' button on the table. This will allow you to add each individual to WikiTree.
