When you need a bit of advice on G2G a bit more info for us is always helpful, is that Doncaster, Yorkshire, England? Was her mother married with the surname Redfern but you don't know her husband's name or was she a single mother? I had a quick look for you and there are a number of possible sources :)

hi my grandmothers name was susan redfern yes she was married to my grandmothers father i just dont have his name my great gran sue died around 1975 i believe she lived as a gypsy at thercroft caravan site in doncaster after leaving great grandad redfern and going to live with a gypsy named blackwell i am trying to trace siblings of my grandmother and also a name for my great grandad thank you

Humm, its a tough one, its more unusual and difficult when you only have the one surname to deal with. I cannot find a birth in Doncaster in 1920 +/- 5 years for an Ellen Redfern, though there are a few possibles in Yorkshire within 5 years either side (people moved with the industrial changes at the turn of the century).

If we knew Susans maiden name it could help if you have any records? In most circumstances we don't have the maiden name of the mother but do have the name of the father. One or the other makes it much more likely to find a record. The only Susan I can find marrying a Redfern is in 1935 in Doncaster, and they don't have a record for an Ellen born 1920 (15 years before their marriage) so I'm a bit stumped! Sorry. There is a Martha marrying a Redfern within your timescales in Doncaster?

hi thinga are a bit muddled lol my grandma ellen was born about 1902 her mother susan about 1880 susan died at the age of 99 at a gypsy caraven site in thurcroft owned by bill blackwell who she had ran off with my nan married ralph chambers in 1923 in doncaster my nan had 11 gypsy half siblings i cant find a birth for my nan thank you
