Civil War regiments were called by number and/or by commander, so sometimes the same unit would be (Smith's) at the start of the war, then (Jones') by the end, other times the unit would be captured, and a new unit with same name would be created, and then another case would be the 1st Regiment was raised in one part of the state, and in another, a different 1st Regiment would be created, so it can be confusing....he shows up in a roster specifying 10th (Diamonds) so that is the place to put him
if all you had was 10th Cavalry, you would have to look at the ones that exist and determine by his enlistment against the unit start/end service, list of battles, where formed, etc to deterime which is correct of
