Is there a category for Civil War Service in the Confederate Army?

Question

Is there a category for individuals who served in the confederate army in the U. S. Civil War? [[Mead-3671 | Lemuel MEAD]] has a tombstone picture on his find a grave site (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/155537107 ) that says he served in Company A of the 10th Kentucky Calvary in the Confederate Army during the civil war. [Note: the mother linked to the find a grave memorial is not his mother as she was born after Lemuel's birth. I sent a message to the manager of the memorial on 12 March 2018 to inform them of this error.]

Anyways, I was researching individuals in the family of [[Hamilton-1018 | Craig HAMILTON]] in the HAMILTON line that I was working on and found that his son, [[Hamilton-17092 | Squire HAMILTON]] had married a [[Mead-3670 | Martha Ellen MEAD]] and that hits back into my MEAD / MEADE family on a sideline so I made up Martha's father, Lemuel MEAD's profile to link it into the existing profiles in that line. I was researching Lemuel MEAD further and found the Find a Grave listing with the tombstone picture. When I saw the tombstone it made me wonder if there was a category already established for confederate service that I needed to add to the profile.

Yes there are civil war categories!

Go up to Find in the upper right corner and drop down the list. Click SEARCH. Scroll down to "Search for  Any Text" and click the radio button for Categories. Type in Kentucky, Civil War and then click GO.

A new page will open, and at the top of the list (this is under a line in the middle of the page) you will see a Category: Kentucky (Confederate), United States Civil War. Click that. Some Regiments are set up already.

There are three for the 10th Calvary though. Further research should reveal which one to attach him to.

the problem I am having now is finding a list of the regiment to tell me which of the three to put him under. There seems to have been one for the Union and two for the confederates... it is very confusing to me.

sorry, yeah, what she said...  I did not notice you said confederate Kentucky....

Civil War regiments were called by number and/or by commander, so sometimes the same unit would be (Smith's) at the start of the war, then (Jones') by the end, other times the unit would be captured, and a new unit with same name would be created, and then another case would be the 1st Regiment was raised in one part of the state, and in another, a different 1st Regiment would be created, so it can be confusing....he shows up in a roster specifying 10th (Diamonds) so that is the place to put him

if all you had was 10th Cavalry, you would have to look at the ones that exist and determine by his enlistment against the unit start/end service, list of battles, where formed, etc to deterime which is correct of 

10th Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry (Diamond's) (Confederate)

10th Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry (Johnson's) (Confederate) - 10th Partisan Rangers

10th Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry (Confederate)

I was looking at the NPS site and am not finding him or any of the 10th. Must be a database problem there.

from there, he is listed with surname MEED instead of MEAD, found him by searching on first name Lemuel, but would have found him just from paging thru all of the unit member listing...
