Hi Rodney.     Yes there is a lot written and established about her said brother George Buchanan born 1506 especially through the Buchanan Society.    I will endeavour to get my files out soon and re examine all the information I have on this family which portrays George as one of 5 brothers and 3 sisters.     It would be so helpful too if someone could unearth some ancient records of the Nicolls family and John Nicolls who it is said had lived on his long standing paternal estate.     Will post more soon hopefully.

Hi Lynda   I was hoping to find clues to this mystery with members on here as I have more or less exhausted areas of research available to myself.   Anyone who can visit Edinburgh and do more intense searches of older records might be able to discover something that would throw some light on these Buchanan links and the Nicolls.       Regards George Buchanan born 1506 he was one of 5 sons and 3 daughters born to Thomas and Agnes (nee Heriott)    The girls were given as Lady Bonull (Lindsay),, Lady Billikinrain (Napier) and Lady Knockdory.    The source for this info is taken fro Extracts from I.D. McFarlanes Biography of Buchanan.   Maybe this could help us find the Christian names of these daughters if there are any records in Lindsay or Napier historical documents of if anyone knows to whom Lady Knockdory relates.  Yes factual errors must abound with so many Buchanans and all the inter marriages between them and notable families.

Check what everyone's thinking. 1. 54 years, breeding? A possible. I believe somewhere I read the max possible is in the early 60's.

2 more likely, a transcription error ot a similar named daughter or parent. For the before or after. I would look more closely at the husband's again,  that may be the deciding factor,

But, then again, father's and first sons in that time period also, names followed a style, pattern.

Thank you for feedback James.     I will do more detective work but there is so little to go on and all channels seem exhausted but I continue to look for clues.    Maybe a member in Edinburgh could access more ancient records and find some answers.

In this case George Buchanans father Thomas died just before or in 1513 ("of stones" according to George)  so his children had to be born before that date and he and wife Agnes (Herriot) had 5 sons and 3 daughters.   There were so many Buchanans and lots of inter marrying between families and although we cannot find or prove a source to confirm Fanny Buchanans marriage to John Nicolls, I feel that the answer is out there somewhere waiting to be found and where exactly she fitted into the Buchanan clan and relationship to George.    very possibly transcription errors as the genealogical tree of Jasper Nicolls that she is on is very correct in other aspects!!!!

ODNB says George's father was Thomas who died about 1512. Fanny should be disconnected. Leave a link to the supposed brother until she can be properly sourced?

Yes I agree but Jaspers Nicolls genealogical tree with her and John Nicolls on is very correct in other aspects following on from them.    It would be good if some member could check this out again at the Society of Genealogists where a copy of the diary with family tree is and search for more Nicolls information to discover more about where their estates were in Scotland.   As George's father died 1513 or just before, then obviously his 4 brothers and 3 sisters had to be born beforehand.
