Looking for genealogy assistance in Tennessee

+4 votes
I am looking for a G2G partner that is living in Tennessee.  I have relatives that were located in Tennessee...mostly in the NW part of the state (i.e. Weakley county)

At this point, I am unwilling to pay Ancestry for access to records.  Tennessee residents can access Tennessee records with a free (no subscription needed) Ancestry account.

As I am not a Tennessee resident, I cannot access those online records.  Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried Family Search? https://www.familysearch.org/
I have exhausted that resource already.  The people I'm seeking were born in the 1800s.

familysearch.org indicates their relationship to ancestors from the late 1800s and early 1900s but does not indicate any details (birth, census, death) about the ones born in the early/ mid-1800s.

Tennessee does have the information available to Tennessee residents for free.  But I'm not a Tennessee resident.
Hi Wayne,

Thanks very much for the assistance.  The two people I'm looking at are:

Will Ellis - probably William Ellis
Fannie Snyder

Death records from Weakley County, Tennessee suggest they are the parents of Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Lee Onie (Ellis) Gallimore, and Birch Wood Ellis.

I was unable to identify a recorded marriage (might have been common law based on their names??), birth or death information, or any census data.

I appreciate the offer of assistance very much.

If you go to your local library they may have access to the Library Edition of Ancestry.com that would be free for a Library participant. Contact you local library for information.

Best of Luck
Hi Steve,
Thanks for that pointer.  I will check that out.

edit to add:  I have confirmed that my local library does have the library edition available. So I will be making use of that.  Thanks to everyone for the pointers!

US Social Security Applications and Claims Index on Ancestry shows a "Grover Cleveland Ellis" born 10 Jan 1885 in Dresden Weak, Tennessee.  On the death certificate, it lists his parents as "Willie Ellis" and "Francis Snider."

I am originally from Tennessee and my brother still lives there.  I use his address to access Tennessee records.  Tell me what you need and I'll do my best to get you the answers you need.

Hi Doug,

Thanks very much.  I received a pile of good info via email due to this request.  I still need to process all of it before I trouble anyone for more info.

If you don't mind, I'll just hang onto this message and contact you if/when I need more help.  I very much appreciate the offer.
