Multiple profiles claiming to be President Jackson's grandfather

+5 votes

I just noticed that there are two profiles claiming to be the paternal grandfather of Andrew Jackson, 7th President of the United States.  Here they are:

The former is linked as the grandfather from President Jackson's profile, but the latter seems at least as well sourced.  I'd think at a minimum, if there were two credible theories, both would be mentioned on President Jackson's page and in the two profiles listed above.  But that is not so.

I presume many professional genealogists have combed through all known data with the utmost meticulousness and have pretty well-established the credibility of these theories already.  Does anyone know of a masterful analysis to resolve what should be said here?

Interestingly, the profile that appears to be well sourced....well, the sources don't seem to provide anything but additional opinion, still no primary sources, just another theory.

That said, it is on the list of "things to do" for the US Presidents Project.

Haha, yes, that's why I chose the language "at least as well-sourced" rather than just "well-sourced".  I don't suppose it will ever be possible to provide primary sources that document his ancestry.  I notice that the Hermitage currently doesn't list anyone before his father in their "genealogy report".  But below I linked to a page that appears to have copied an earlier version of this report that included earlier generations.  It is careful to say that the father and siblings of Andrew Senior are disputed.

(Search down the page for "linen" to find the apparent excerpt from the old Hermitage report.)
