A new project, Genealogy in the Media (GITM), has just launched and is looking for volunteers. A sub-project of the Global Community Outreach Project, the goal of the GITM Project is to document the profiles of people featured in all kinds of genealogical shows and programs from across the globe, to raise their profiles to a high standard, and to connect them and their families to the global tree.

If this is something you'd like to be a part of then we'd love to have you. Please add GITM as a tag and answer the post below and we can get you signed up.

Thanks,

Susie :-)

Hi Clarissa,

I'll send you a PM.

Thanks!

Susie
Hi Susie

I've was working on the WDYTYA project with Leisa. I believe Andrew turned over the work he had done to your group. I am interested in joining. Are you are still working on the WDYTYA shows?

Thanks

Amanda
I'm going to hazzard a guess? "Who do you think you are"? "Why don't you try your ancestors"? "We died young then you arrived"?

This is why WikiTree tends to avoid confusing shortened forms.
Is this new genealogy in the media about genealogy shows? because if it is I believe I have a case for them.
The project I was working on was the Australian Version. Unfortunately one of my colleagues went ahead and created the initial profiles for some of the celebrities that were featured and then turned them over to this group. With the new privacy laws I don't want to create anyone else in case I double up. I'm not sure if this group is still active. My experience is mainly Australian, Irish and English records.

I used the name of the sub group in my post
Hi Amanda. You'll need to contact Maria Maxwell. With the GDPR living celebrity profiles have gone unlisted so the project has gone quiet and I am no longer leading it. Maria has stayed there though so you could try her.

Susie
Hi Amanda  - I'll have a look at this for you.    UK has recently started a new series 15 of WDYTYA so this project is on my "to do" list for this week !!
Thank you Maria and Susie

I'm happy to help as needed

Git'em?  MDR!  Now why do you want to get them?  What have they done to you?  And who are you, Anonymous Anonymous?

But seriously, dump the acronym habit.  (MDR = morte de rire = died of laughter) laugh

With the change to allow Living Notables if they meet certain criteria to be viewable once more - is there any chance this project would be revitalised?

Patsy Kensit is my 5th cousin. I have done a lot of research into Kensit family and Patsy in particular. I'd like to be part of the project.

Love both these shows of WDYTYA and Finding your roots! I am currently working through watching all the old episodes for the US, UK and Australian versions of WDYTYA.

Would love to join this group and help out where I can.

Very nice C. You and I are probably cousins too! Were you wanting to join the GITM project?

I love Finding Your Roots!  I would like to see more of WDYTYA, too, but I'm happy to work on the FYR team.  Some of the featured celebs are distant cousins of mine.  Most of the episodes are available online, one way or another, as are some of the basic trees, aren't they?

They are Jaki, and we can always help each other out finding primary sources and good secondary ones. Thanks for signing up, a PM is on its way!

Much prefer the rich and famous driving themselves to their homeland and then off backward stumbling onto their ancestor's migration route, into former habitats, getting one clue at a time on site from now famous, rich and ambitious researchers OVER "This is your life; turn the page please."  But, whichever format, I would dearly love to slip the ribbon from my ornate family tree scroll to see how we go on back to John Lackland like most all the Presidents.  <http://www.abroadintheyard.com/presidents-who-descend-from-king-john-of-england-why-you-do-too/>

Hi Ronald, can I assume you'd like to join the WDYTYA team?

Susie :-)
You bet I would!
Great Ronald. I'll PM you. :-)

WDYTYA is my favorite show, of the two. Though FYR has the best host --what a personality!

So many times when I've been watching one of the many genealogy shows I've thought "Man, I hope someone is making sure this research makes it onto WikiTree."   I would think that the show's producers would want to share the research, too, just for the marketing opportunity it would provide to involve the WikiTree community.  But so far I haven't seen that happen.  I wonder if AJ Jacobs could help provide the contacts needed to collaborate with the show producers for FYR and WDYTYA.

We're doing our own research on the profiles. We're just cataloging that they appeared on the shows. The shows themselves are a launch pad and inspiration for us to feature certain people and places on WikiTree. Would you like to join us?

Susie :-)
Let me just say that I'll keep an eye on the project without committing to join for now.  I go through phases in my genealogy work that last around 6 months, so maybe in a few months I'll catch the bug and do some work on these celebrities.

i would like to try to match with those who have mtDNA which is rare n the African American data base, M7c3c.  Some of those tested had this haplogroup.

That sounds really interesting Annette. I wonder if this might be something better suited to the DNA Project? You'd be most welcome to join us at GITM if you'd like to work on the profiles of those who have appeared on the shows :-)

Would definitely love to help when and where I can.

I'd like to be included in the project, and work as a connector for the WDYTYA team in the UK. I've just managed to connect Jeremy Clarkson, and worked on Amanda Redman a couple of months ago.

Fantastic Carol! I'll send you a PM. :-)

I'm not volunteering for the project, but I want to let you know that after I stumbled on a profile -- https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Trowbridge-9 -- that had a link to a G2G question about one of these shows, I added the gitm tag to several G2G questions that expressed some sort of interest in connecting these shows to WikiTree. GITM leaders might want to recruit the members who posted those questions.
by Ellen Smith G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
Thanks for the heads up Ellen :-)

Hi Susie, a few of us in Wikitree in Australia Facebook group are working on Who Do You Think You Are Australia celebrities. The leader Leisa Kelly created a project page, https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Space:WDYTYA&public=1 and advertised for volunteers on G2G. Between us we ran a few of the people who have featured through the New Person search and didn't get any matching profiles, so I thought I'd start with the most recent episode I'd seen. One of your existing project members did an excellent job with some of the earlier Australian episodes - I thought her efforts merited me awarding her the Community Star badge. It will be rather sad when the newer generations of these trees go Unlisted meaning there's potential for doubling up of the existing work/research. I'd like to join the GITM project please.
by Andrew Hunter G2G4 (4.6k points)
Hi Andrew,

I'm excited that you'd all like to work on WDYTYA (Aus) Profiles. We already have a team working on these profiles as part of the GITM Project so the best thing is for you all to join us there so you can liaise with others. I'll send you a PM. I'll also contact Lisa and the others.

Thanks, Andrew,

Susie :-)
Hi Susie. If you PM'ed me, I never received it.
I just sent you another one. Can you let me know if you don't get it?

Thanks, Andrew,

Susie :-)

Something that might help. Most Tv shows have published transcripts. query for tv show transcripts to list of sites with show transcripts.  Sure beats starting and stopping video.  Transcripts may contain sources. Not said on the show.  They may show the source but not give volume or page while transcripts may have the full source
