Union 54th Massachusetts regiment: 3 Companies done, 7 to go

+7 votes
I completed the initial profiles for all of the enlisted men of Company B of the 54th Massachusetts regiment today. Three companies down, seven to go, plus commissioned and non-commissioned officers.

Some highlights from my initial research:

* Private Charles B. Wentworth of Company B was the father of Private Charles B. Wentworth of Company K; also notable: Charles Jr.'s ancestry on his mother's side tracks all the way back to Fortune Little who was kidnapped from Africa (or Siam, depending on the source), enslaved in Massachusetts and eventually freed to become a free person of color and land owner in New Hampshire and, later, Vermont

* A beautiful public domain photograph of Private Edward Augustus Croslear in his golden years

* Interracial marriage and the subjective race field in census records for Private Edward H. Mero and his children
