The Irish Roots Project co-ordinates the efforts of Wikitreers who have Irish ancestry and/or would like to improve the profiles of Irish people and the Irish diaspora on Wikitree.

There has been an explosion of free Irish genealogical records in the last few years and there has never been a better time to bust those brick walls and improve the Irish profiles on Wikitree.

If you would like to join the project we would love to have you.  Please post an answer below (including your research interests and what you would like to work on) and follow the instructions on the project page.

Hi Amanda and welcome to the Irish Roots Project.
I would love to join the Irish Roots Project.  My Grandparents came here to U.S. from Ireland in the early 1900's.  I have spent hours tracing my Irish Roots and just recently found (part of) my great-great grandparents names.  (McKinley)

Hi Bob and welcome to the Irish Roots Project.
I would be very grateful to be able to work on this project.  My specific interest is locating and sharing source material regarding the Scottish and English migration waves to the North of Ireland...I would like to find ships used and manifest documents.  However, I am happy to help where I would be the most useful.
I would be very grateful for any help I can get.Joseph McConnell, born 1801 in Ireland, we have no idea of the parish, came to Canada, was married here in 1831.  Haven't been able to find the passage here.  Thank you for any help or ideas you may have.

Hi,

I would love to join your project.  My Irish connection is my Great Great Grandfather, William O'Rourke who came to Canada, from Ireland, in about 1834.
I have relatives on both sides of the family from ireland. One side meath county  the other side kerry county. Would love to join
Hi Lorraine and Lexi  - welcome to the Irish Roots Project.
Can I join please

I am researching the Mulligans, Gallagher's and Cahill's of County Mayo and the Grant's and Ryans of Tipperary
Hi Peter, you most certainly can.   Welcome to the Irish Roots Project and good luck with your research.
I'd love to join & assist. I'm researching Irish roots on both sides, I believe largely centered around Ulster.
Hi Christopher and welcome to the Irish Roots Project.
I'm excited to join this project. My maternal line has surnames Buchanan and Quinn that lived in County Tyrone. They lived in Corcreevy and Gortmore and were members of the Church of Ireland in Fivemiletown. It was passed down that the Buchanans came to Northern Ireland from Scotland but I've been unable to get beyond my 2xGGF. He was born in 1845 but place of birth is unknown. He lived in the Fivemiletown area until 1883 when he emigrated to the United States with his children. If I'm able to find information on him, his brother or father, it would open up much information about Buchanan roots in Northern Ireland.
Hi Tom and welcome to the Irish Roots Project.  Good luck with your research.
I am interested in the Irish Roots Project.  My family names are McConnell, McKelvey, and Potter  among others.  The Potters are from Caledon, Tyrone County.

Hi Sharon, Thanks for your interest in Irish Roots. I added you to the County Tyrone Project Maria will be giving you the Irish Roots badge soon.

HI Sharon and welcome to the Irish Roots Project.  Good luck with your research.
Hi! I have a few Irish ancestors on both sides. Right now, I'm researching the last names, Crozier and Scott. I'd love to join the Irish Roots Project!
Hi Anna and welcome to the Irish Roots Project.
I would like to join the Irish Roots project. I have Irish both sides of my tree. Thanks Pam
Hi Pamela and welcome to the Irish Roots Project.
My paternal last name (my maiden name) is Hill and I have Irish roots.   There is also a grandparent on my mothers side who is from Ireland.   I would like to join the Irish Roots project as well.
Hi Connie and welcome to the Irish Roots Project.
Hello,

I am interested in this project since I have Irish ancestors on both sides of my family and like many here have some brick walls.  Surnames of Grace, Skahan, Bustin/Busteed and Casey hailed from County Cork.  Cleary and Kelly from Offaly.  The remaining are a mystery as to birth location but many were in Cork after marriage. McCarty, Murphy, Desmond, Ahern and Foley. Sharing of information is always welcome.
Hi Vickie,   Unfortunately it seems you were not signed in to WikiTree when you posted your request.   I'm also having difficulty finding you on WikiTree.    Can I ask you to confirm your WikiTree ID or if you are not currently a member to join us @ Wikitree.com.  Thanks.
Hi, I would like to join the Irish roots project.  Tyrone please. My names are Mayne, and Campbell.. I am not sure if I have joined already..
Hello Raewyn, Welcome to Irish Roots. I've added you to the Tyrone project and Maria will be giving you the Irish Roots badge very soon.
Hi Raewyn (and thanks Richard) welcome to the Irish Roots Project.
Hi, I would like to join the Irish Roots Project. Am trying to break through a brick wall to find more on my GGGrandparents & beyond, surname Mates. My leads are pointing to County Wicklow & Dublin, but possibly other areas.
Hi Richard,  thanks for adding me.. Can I ask how do I attach the Badge to my Irish profiles....please
Thank you Maria, I look forward to the group

Mulligan-986
Peter Mulligan...my 3x great aunt Eliza or Elizabeth Buchanan married James Mulligan in Fivemiletown, County Tyrone in 1868. Could you be related to this line? Have you done in DNA testing?
Hi Peter sorry for delay.    I'm afraid I have an ocean of e-mails still to action !!   That's you in now.
Hi Tom

If I am related to James Mulligan line, it's beyond my knowledge.

My Great Grandfather was from Mayo, I'm unsure where his father came from but I'd suspect either Mayo or Sligo.

My family myth if you like is that we originated in Donnegal which is next to Tyrone but we were forced to move during the Plantation of Ulster.

Sorry I can't give you more info
Love Irish research . Lots of confusion when it comes to ancestors . I am looking for info prior to 1850 on the Kenney/ Riley side and Kenney /Walsh side . I would love to scour archives and local parishes for records
Hi Amber welcome to WikiTree and to the Irish Roots Project.    Good luck with your research.
My last name is Leary - I'm interested in tracing my Irish roots.
Hello Jack and welcome to the Irish Roots Project.    Good luck with your research.
Hello, I'm interested in joining Irish Roots Project as the majority of my ancestors are from Ireland.Callaghan,Kane,Kennedy,Canavan  and and my wifes name is Fitzpatrick.
Hi, I'm interested in this project.  My paternal line goes back to Martin/Swain from County Wexford.  It has been very difficult to find any information on them at all.  I'm also doing abit of a one name study (for lack of a better term) on Swayne/Swaine/Swain in Ireland. I'm slowly adding profiles from this personal project to wikitree.

I would like to join. I am Newport Mayo OMalley, Hannigan, Gilmartin, Manning, Masterson, Bracken (for a friend), Fitzgerald just for starters! So many brick walls in Ireland. I have imported a GEDCOM from Ancestry but am just starting to find my way around WIKITREE. I added a few unsourced in the source-a-thon. But had to go back and watch the videos again to remember how to do it. And happy to help with orphans, too.

Hi Beth,  Sorry for the delay in picking up your post.   Welcome to the Irish Roots Project.
Hi Melanie and welcome to the Irish Roots Project.
Hi,

I would like to join and give whatever help that I can. I have Irish Roots being born, reared and still living in Northern Ireland.

Thanks, Jill.
Hi Jill welcome to the Irish Roots Project and thanks for your offer of help !!  Most appreciated.    There are always questions on G2G from WikiTreers seeking advice.   Perhaps you could help with some of these.

Also we have to change our current county categories over to free space projects.   Would you like to do this for one (or two !!)  of the NI counties. you are interested in ?
I a just back from Ireland where I looked U usefully for my g g grandfather Patrick Morrissey. He was born around 1803 and was a hero in the Carrickshick Incivent in 1837. He came to Newfoundland, Canada nd lived to be 80

I'm so jealous, Hope you had a great time and congrats on finding Patrick. It got me looking and the Tithe_War_1831-1836 category wasn't created yet, so I made one. The Carrickshock Incident was part of it. You can add Patrick to it. I'm interested to see his story.

I would like to join the Irish Roots project. I have Irish roots on both my maternal and paternal lines, including surnames Carroll, Corcoran, O’Brien, McLaughlin, Lane/Lean, and Barrett; and a special interest in Counties Cork and Kilkenny.
Hi Kathy,  sorry for the delay in picking up your post !    Welcome to the Irish Roots Project and good luck with your research.
I would love to help with the Irish roots project.  I have researched family in the counties of Galway and Kerry. Irish is everywhere in my family on my Dad's side.  Some of the many family members are Shea, Cullen, Burke, Joyce, Grealis, Hilliard, and Casey.  So whatever you need me to do I will gladly help.

Donna L: Lewis
Hi Donna,   sorry for delay in picking up your post !    Welcome to the Irish Roots Project.    Perhaps you could have a look at our County sub projects and see if you would like to look after/manage one !!
I would like to join the irish_roots project, My GG-Grandfather was from Donegal. Ironically, my wife chose a house in the Sacred Heart/St. Patrick parish in our city. As I am also a Shamrock wearing volunteer firefighter, it all must be a sign to go deeper into my roots of the Emerald Isle.

Hi Daryl, and welcome to the Irish Roots Project. I've added your name to the Donegal Sub Group and Maria will be giving you an Irish Roots Badge shortly.

You may be interested in some of our other Projects. They're listed on a time line at Time Line of Irish History

Hi Daryl and welcome from me too,  to the Irish Roots Project.
My name is Annette von Brughan, South Africa. My paternal grandmother's line comes from Ireland. Our progenitor was Michael Goss who was recruited in Wicklow, and sailed from Cork, Ireland to South Africa with the 1820 settlers. Some records indicate that his parents were James Goss and Anne or Nanny Dorey. I have not been able to find any source documents for these relationships.

I have mentioned before about my interest in the Goss line but most of the alerts I received were for the Goss line in USA.

If there is anyone out there with information of the the South African Goss line, or who can link Michael Goss to his parents, please let me know.
I would love to join .

We have traced our paternal line back to 1773 to my 7x great grandparents Patrick Joyce and Catherine Fitzgerald in Fethard Tipperary.

We would love to get further back but seem to have hit a brick wall regarding their parentage

Marie Joyce
Hi Annette and Marie.   Welcome to the Irish Roots Project.   Good luck with your research.
Hello, would like to participate. Born in Ireland and have ancestral links to County Mayo & County Antrim. Currently reside in County Down.

Many thanks, Lucy.
Please add me to the project. My maternal lineage surnames: Adair, Jamison, Kinnear, Little, and Martin. All were living in County Down in the early to mid-1800s. The came to the US in 1856 and settled in Oakland, Garrett, MD. I'd enjoy tracking back their ancestry, meeting cousins, sharing information, etc. Also, I wonder if 'my' Adair, Little, and Martin family are connected to those who came to America in the 1700s and eventually settled in Laurens County, SC. If so, they were neighbors of my paternal lineage (Bell, Bourland, Odell, and Prather).  Thanks so much!
Hi Lucy,  sorry for the delay in picking up your post.   Welcome to the Irish Roots Project.  Good luck with your research.
Hi Beth and welcome to the Irish Roots Project.   Good luck with your research in 2019.
thanks so much (again)!
Hello, my name is Jessica Moylan from the United States, I have ancestors that came from Ireland but I am not quite sure as to how many generations ago. If anyone has any information please let me know
Hi Jessica and welcome to WikiTree.    Please see the note I've posted on your profile.
Hi, I am Irish on my mum's side but one of my unties did a dna test and it said we could have an Irish ancestor who was alive about 1775 who possibly lived in Munster but I don't know who he is because my tree somewhat stops around 1833 at Emerson-2390(John Emerson) can someone please help me thanks:)
Hi Lochlan

I have an Emerson [[William Emerson|Emerson-3305]] in my family line (my fourth great grandfather) who born c. 1737 and lived in Waterford, Ireland (part of Munster). So far, I have only identified his three daughters. His youngest daughter Martha Emerson married Thomas Shearman and our family is descended from that line. My information is rather sketchy & haven't been able to take it further back. There were other Emersons in the Waterford and surrounding areas at this time.

Jeanette O'Hagan
Hi Jeanette,  thanks for this.   Are you interested in joining the Ireland Project ?

Lochlan - welcome to WikiTree.

According to my DNA test I'm 55% Irish but I haven't found any documentation to connect me with Ireland other than some of my surnames that appear on those Irish Surname maps. Perhaps this project will shed some light on my Irish roots.

Kind regards,

Sometimes death certs and census returns in the "new" country are a good source of info re where in Ireland your ancestors came from.  Look to see where their neighbours came from for a possible hint too.    Good luck with your research.

I have Irish Roots! I have a family genealogy book that was published in 1984 that traces back to 1780 and County Tyronne, Ireland. I just got on Wikitree and have a ton of data entry to do. But the facts are in the book and I hope to prove more with updated pictures and proof. (The author just died in September but I hope to continue the work.)
by Christie Buckley G2G1 (1.0k points)

Do you have any connections to the Buchanan surname in County Tyrone?
+10 votes
My name is Frank Walsh. I have 100% Irish ancestry. I have traced my ancestors back to County Kilkenny, Ireland but I cannot find any birth records since there are none in the particular parish in question for the years of interest. I am interested in researching Irish records for a number of surnames in Ireland.
by Frank Walsh G2G3 (3.3k points)
Hi Frank and welcome to the Irish Roots Project.  Good luck with your research.
100% would be unusual, I think. Did you have your DNA tested?
Yes, YDNA67 and atDNA of my daughter and sister. When I say 100% Irish I refer to my family's (Walsh) line from The Rower parish, County Kilkenny and Carrick on Suir, County Waterford. I don't pay much heed to FTDNA's origins estimates.
Your way ahead of me in determining your Irish roots. I'm stalled at my great-grandparents, Dennis Sullivan and Elizabeth (Malone) Sullivan. I know that they were both born in Ireland, but I have no idea where.

Based on my Ancestor.com DNA, I'm 47% Ireland/Scotland/Wales.and 17% Europe West.
No not way ahead, just lucky. Family tradition has it that my Great Great grandparents were buried "near the fence" in Belvedere Cemetry in St. John's. After many searches I found the gravestone of Patrick and Mary Walsh with approprriate dates and County origins. Subsequent searches of the RC Basilica marriage and baptismal records gave me their native Parishes and children. As I said, just lucky.

I am specifically interested in the surname Parnell, and I have tons of information that could be added, with good sources.  I am fairly new, so I'm trying to do things properly, and not step on any toes, however, I do see many errors and poor source links.  Also, I'll add that most of what I have is pre-1900.  Is there anyone else working on Parnell lines in Ireland?  I also have the jump across from England pre-1700, for the famous Parnell line, (poet Thomas, Sir John, CSP, etc.) and I will be pursuing that, but I guess that's a different project.

Thanks, Cliff

I am the second great-grandson of Dennis Sullivan and Elizabeth Malone who were born in Ireland in the early 1800's.  I don't know where they lived in Ireland, so this is a brick wall I'm trying to break.  Also, my Ancestor.com DNA testing shows that I'm 47% Ireland/Scotland/Wales ancestry.

Hello everyone, I'm from the province of Québec, Canada, and am very proud of my Irish roots on my maternal side (according to AncestryDNA, I'm 32 % Irish). I know that my Irish ancestor (John McCaughan) came to Montréal from Co. Antrim in 1820, but have had so far no luck in finding his family in Ireland. Hope I will be able to make some progress.

Hi all, I would like to be included in the Irish Roots project. I have a deep connection on my paternal side. And a mystery on a possible surname change sometime around 1820. Hi all!

I've been proven to be 59% Irish, which coincides with all the Golden, Lynch, Lee, Barry, Fitzgerald, Keegan, Flanagan, Nolan, O'Brien, Dease, Plunkett, Nangle, Nugents running around my family tree!

I'm descended from Earls and Barons and Baronets and Knights in Co. Meath, Westmeath and Kildare as well as lots of plain ol' commoners in the same areas as well as Roscommon and Cork and who knows where else.

Patrick Golden and wife, Mary McDonough immigrants from Boyle, Roscommon, Ireland.

Edward Lee, son of immigrants from Co. Cork, Ireland to Ontario, Canada. He emigrated from Ontario to New Haven, Indiana in 1850

So I'd definitely like to join the Irish Roots Project!

Liz

Hello, I'd like to join.  My main focus is the Maharees, Castlegregory, County Kerry (but I work on the whole Dingle Peninsula too!), and Courtmachserry & Timoleague/Clonakilty, County Cork (and the surrounds).  The surnames in particular are McCarthy (landowners) and O'Driscoll (pirates!).

Thank you,

Sheila (McCarthy-2108)
by Sheila McCarthy G2G2 (2.5k points)
Good morning Sheila,   I see Maggie has sorted your badge.   A warm welcome to the Irish Roots Project.
Hi Sheila, I know your comment is from a couple of years ago, but I wanted to say hi. I’m also researching The O’Driscolls from County Kerry, and one line of them in particular (Patrick and his wife Mary Mason). They were born circa 1810, and I’ve not been able to go back further than that. Not sure if my line connects with the O’Driscolla you’re researching - would be interesting!

Many thanks

Caroline

Actually, my McCarthys are from The Maharees, Castlegregory, County Kerry (and having tested my father's y-chromosome, I know that we are among only about 30% of McCarthys who are paternal descendants of the eponymous Cárthach (d. 1045) (i.e., about 70% of those with the surname McCarthy do NOT descend from Cárthach)).

My O'Driscolls were from Courtmacsherry, County Cork, and having tested my O'Driscoll uncle's y-chromosome, I know that we are also O'Driscoll from when surnames began (as I was told, "I descend from a long line of faithful O'Driscoll wives".  hahaha)
