Spring has sprung in the Midwest, which means tornado season isn't far behind. To celebrate the warming days, our team, the "Tidying Tornadoes," is participating in a three-day "Clean-a-Thon"  April 21 - April 23, 2018. This is WikiTree's second annual "Clean-a-Thon".

Welcome to those who volunteered to help and have been assigned to our team! We look forward to blowing away all the debris that clutters our ancestors and leaving a clean and tidy swath of beautiful profiles in our wake.

This G2G question and answer thread  is our team's place to ask questions, give advice, see updates and cheer each other on. I'm serving as our team captain with Amanda Frank as our #1 cheerleader and Tornado wrangler.

Just a tip before we start. Add the Clean_A_Thon and Tidying_Tornadoes tags to your followed tags so you don’t miss any of the posts =)
Your tornadoes look fierce--like they mean business and are ready to clean up some seriously messy profiles!! :-D
Thanks Emma. I’m proud of our batch of tornadoes and we haven’t even started yet! I have a good feeling that we are going to surpass last years totals and ranking =D
Where can I find the live chats?
where can we see our scores? or can we?  am i doing it right?  hate to spend all this time for this and not be on your count?  I did all of my Taylor-25258  anything that had my handle on it.  but now I am doing the unsourced.
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Spring_Clean-a-Thon

Just do a search (CTRL+F) for your user name, you'll see your name inside the team and you can check on ours and all of the other team's scores.

Wow, pretty impressive, you're up to 139 so far today!

You are at 155 so you are doing it right. The link is here.

Here is a link where you can see everyone's scores up to date:

So sorry team, but I'm on the road and won't be able to help to much this time. I've got some family business to attend to.
That's okay John. I just hope everything is okay.
nice, thank you.
Thank you for the update John. I was wondering where you were. I hope you are doing well.
Everything is fine now. Had a funeral in Southern Illinois and on to Northwest Indiana for a visit with our children. Thanks for the kind words.

Go Team!!

Thanks for the introduction Karen. I love the title of Tornado Wrangler by the way =)

I’ll be on here as often as anybody wants really before the Clean-a-Thon starts. When it starts I’ll still be on here but I’ll also most likely be in the live chats too along with cleaning up our states so it’s a good thing that I always need to multitask. I’ll let you all in on a little secret before the first YouTube livechat, I’ll be under winsky1989 there not Amanda Frank ;-)

I look forward to talking and working with all you guys.

I'm happy tbe joining the Tornado team! My goal has been to make the Wisconsin profiles squeaky clean. I'm slow, but when I'm done I hope things sparkle.
by Dana Johnson G2G6 Mach 3 (32.0k points)
As a Wisconsinite, I thank you for it. I’ll probably, okay most likely, be working in the Wisconsin errors during CAT. We can sort it out closer to start if you want. In regards to you thinking your slow, anything helps in the long haul. Also “Slow and steady wins the race” or in this case the Clean-a-Thon =D

We would love to have you Sandra. If you go here (https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/581587/will-you-participate-in-our-2018-spring-clean-a-thon-current) and tell them that you will then officially be apart of the team.

Hello group! This is my first clean-a-thon. I have read over the help page and getting ready. (Here is the link for anyone else who is new. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Spring_Clean-a-Thon#Video_chats)

I am really exited to participate. I do work on Saturday and Monday so Sunday will be my main day. My goal will be mainly working on Minnesota. Also I would gladly take any advice from the veterans.

Thanks for adding me to the team!

by Kaylinn Stormo G2G6 Mach 1 (19.7k points)
That was my strategy for last year except it was Wisconsin. I was jumping back and forth between the errors so much. This time I need to force myself not to do that so much lol.

One tip I can give you is if you find yourself going down on of those “rabbit holes” just bookmark the profile or write it down somewhere and that way you can keep going with the errors and work on the profile after the CAT. Also if you find somebody interesting and they are an orphaned profile feel free to adopt them. I adopted part of a family just because their last name was Grimm =) Another thing is that you can always find the profiles you worked on during the CAT in your Contributions list in case you want to go back and do more on the profiles later too.

So those are just my tips and I’m free to any advice and tips too.

PS We are glad to have you Kaylinn

We say spring has sprung but for me it decided to hop back away and let winter blow back in. Here where I live in Wisconsin we got 5.9” of snow Tuesday and are now back in the 30s. There is also a pretty good chance of snow again on Sunday. I can agree that storm season will be upon us in a few short weeks just by proir experience and the knowledge that the statewide tornado drill is next week, lol. Have any of you been experiencing weird weather lately?
by Amanda Frank G2G6 Mach 5 (55.4k points)
Since this post we have had a major snowstorm that dropped over 11” of snow and a good amount of ice. It was even worse north of me where in Green Bay they got 24” making it the 2nd worst snowstorm in the city’s history.

it's coming back to me... we make a list of the profiles we "clean-up" on this G2G as which comment or answer?  right??? starting as soon as I turn on wiki and pull up a profile, the naughty (error)  list has changed now.  which list do I use to clean? THX
by Carole Taylor G2G6 Mach 7 (73.5k points)

You don’t have to tell us which exact profiles you are working on. It might help to know which state(s) you are planning on or are working on. It also fun to share any funny, ridiculous or interesting errors you run into while working like Mr. Died During Civil War.

The “naughty lists” have changed slightly this time round and have gotten more ways to be naughty. The easiest way to find our lists is on our team page and go from there. If you have items on your own naughty list, under suggestions in the my wikitree drop down menu, feel free to tackle those first. I hope I answered your question.

PS My phone was being naughty and kept erasing everything on me so this took 54 minutes to type. Naughty naughty phone

My first cleanathon - looking forward to helping.
by SJ Baty G2G Astronaut (1.2m points)
Hey SJ, Welcome! What are you focusing during the Clean-a-thon?
I hadn't fully decided yet.  I just recently started the Baty/Beaty/Beatty name study projects and looking at the list of all 3 surnames I see a lot of cleaning that needs to be done.  Most of the Beatties are from the mid-west.

thoughts?

Welcome again SJ and I am glad you choose us.

I see two possible options that you might like. The first would to just stick with working with your Baty/Beaty/Beatty surnames by working on errors in those names. For example by going to here and by then clicking on suggestions you will find 24 right now. So that was the Baty. The Beaty is here and the Beatty is here.

The second would be to work on the state that you seems to be the one that you find is the most common for your ancestors. This way not only can you refine your skills on working on that state but you may in the end find an unknown ancestor. You can work on more than one state if you want too.

Sounds great; I'll do both.

Mothership 1 for our Baty family is Iowa.
Perfect! =D
sorry I didn't ask earlier but how can I find errors for Iowa?
thanks!

Hello,Tornadoes Team, I see that several of you will be working on Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri. I've never lived in the Midwest, but my immediate roots are in Kansas (three generations before me), so I'll be working on that state. Looks like a lot to do!
by June Higgins G2G5 (5.3k points)
Well I’m glad I snatched it up for you than June. I’m planning on going between Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois.

So we are 2 hours into this, how is everyone doing?

I got mixed up with the times and started an hour late so I'm playing catch up.
by Amanda Frank G2G6 Mach 5 (55.4k points)
a ha!  I just posted this same thing and now only checking the other comments - I'm about 45 mins in and up to 8 - first two took me 1/2 that time and now I've knocked out 3 in 12 mins - so I'm learning :-)

Team: Welcome to the start line.

How is everyone doing?  I was at work and only got started about 12 hours into the competition.  This is my first try at this ~ I've not worked with errors before.  After about a 40 minute learning curve, I'm starting to knock them out - I'm up to 8 now.

How are you doing?
by SJ Baty G2G Astronaut (1.2m points)
Well I've been up working on this since Midnight central time, got mixed up with the times. I'm in a battle with Jim for first in the team. And I'm starting to run on fumes so a nap might be in the future =D
You are at 70 now!!!! You must have gotten the hang of it. I got here late so I'm just getting started. I feel like I am going soooo slow.
You'll get the hang of it Kaylinn. And some errors you'll find can be done faster than others.
I'm sure that in time I'll get faster - to get to 70 I spent waaaaay more time than I should have.  Bit by bit, just poured my after breakfast coffee, going to knock out a few more.

On the sunny side, I just got a thank you email from a profile I notified.
Thats awesome SJ. I've been chugging away all night at these stupid missing <references /> in Michigan. I've finally hit the V's so hopefully I'll be done soon.
I know it's not a source-a-thon but I really like making the profile as complete as I can before I move on. I know it slows me down, but it also makes me feel better.
There is nothing wrong with with that Kaylinn.
And here you are now Kaylinn at this moment about to break 200 any moment and sitting in 7th in our team rankings. =D

803 - Almost Empty Profile for WISCONSIN is complete. (And my mousing arm hasn't fallen off yet.)
by Dana Johnson G2G6 Mach 3 (32.0k points)
Go you Dana!
802 - Empty Profile for WISCONSIN -- DONE!! Time for a break.
You deserve it! You are a rockstar!! I better get my butt in gear if I even want to stay in 3rd in the team ranking lol.

Doozies in Michigan...Cause of Death-Dropsy/Albee, Saginaw, Michigan, United States and 4 Find-A-Graves in Location of Deaths,

by Amanda Frank G2G6 Mach 5 (55.4k points)
We also have certain that the location of death is Unknown *facepalm*
HA! That's great.
You have to watch out that your Saginaw doesn't flare up on you!  Plenty of rest and vitamins!

Just got my first feedback:

"Thanks for pointing out the discrepancy, S.J.

Find A Grave is wrong and I have just pointed that out to them..."

That was very gratifying ;-)

We are now a few hours more than 24 into this. How is everyone doing?

For me, well I'm tired but that's nothing some Pepsi, sugar, and good music can't help fix. =D
by Amanda Frank G2G6 Mach 5 (55.4k points)
I'm at 78 - getting faster at it; I come back every 1/2 hour or so and do one or two - was up late last night and I can only get away with that one night per weekend ;-)

I've starting to realize what the codes mean and how to best fix them.  I think by next Clean A-Thon I'll be a snap at this.

I also read the Data Doctors code and have tried to apply the principals.  I've also cleaned up a lot of citations, organized a few bios and labeled (quite a few) profiles {{Unsourced}}.

We just got bumped from 4th place to 5th place.

I'll try and get in a few after lunch.

Lets try to get our 4th place position back!

by SJ Baty G2G Astronaut (1.2m points)
Ah - its the Kiwis who passed us.  They're all awake and the US folks are in bed.  I'll try to keep the lead close until you all wake up ;-)
They are going to bed now and most of us should be waking up, I was awake but my laptop was acting up causing my progress to decline sharply. A reboot later and all seems to be looking better.
