Sometimes when I get stuck on a person, I move on to others in the family.  You mention a census - if you start researching siblings or children, you may come upon a document with the info you are looking for. It may be just a simple misspelling of a name. Are you using familysearch.org?  I have been pleasantly surprised at what comes up when working on a family and finding info on parents through the children or siblings.  Don't give up, keep searching!  :-)
