Hello! Betsey Ann Weeden and Robert H Phillips are my gg-grandparents. i think family stories are very important. i would love to hear your story. about Robert being a runaway slave. DNA suggests that story might be true..Who's family do you belong to? Thank You!
I am also a decendant of Robert H Phillips and Betsey Ann Weeden. I have reserached on ancestry.com but have hit a stop at both. THey are my 4th great grandparents. I have a DNA profile on ancestry that shows both african and native american DNA. I would love to hear more about the stories passed down to you. Do you have any more names of relatives of either?
Hello cousin Jennifer! I have a tree on Ancestry.com that you can look at. It's under campbellt90. I was able to find a twin brother for Robert and on his marriage record a name for their parents Betsey and Albert from Claverack, Ny. This is where I get stuck. I was told by my grandfather that both his grandparents came from the Narragansett reservation. He said the Phillips land had water on two sides. In the early nineties my father and I found an old map of the reservation and is was exactly as he told us. I can't find out how and when they left. I know someone had the deed to the land and lost it. They said that the land was there if the family wanted it, but they were never going back. The land was sold as public land which mean they didn't sell it. They were listed as Mulatto one year on the census and Black the next. They were mixed. I don't know if Betsey was native and Robert was mixed. They both maybe were mixed with everything! lol! All I know is my DNA says the same. Our family is that way also, and I think it's great. If you have any stories that the older people may have passed down to you I would love to hear them. They may help us put their story together. Thanks!
Oh sorry! Robert's twin was also named Albert. He married a woman that lived with Robert for a short while probably after her husband died. Her name is Adaline Holland, and she was married Three times as far as I can tell. Adaline Hoffey became Root, Holland, then Phillips. I can't find out anything about them except the marriage record.

Hello, Where are you getting your information that Besty was "disowned" by the Narragansett tribe? Is there something in writing the ties her to the tribe or disowning her?
