I completely missed the rollover to 17,000,000. Thanks for the update John! Christmas for 16,000,000. Easter for the next million. What holiday do we have coming up next? :-D
Do we have a guess how many are fictional, mythical, questionable?

Thanks Emma, for your crystal ball, I suppose we should aim for 17.5 for Commonwealth Day, 24th May, Queen Victoria's birthday (but it has had various dates since the first in 1902) - - then 18.0 , for Wimbledon finals, about the 4th July Holiday  - - - cheers ja.

Fantastic John :-D  It is a goal to aim for!

Congratulations, you wonderfully kind, diverse, dedicated, collaborative WikiTreers at adding 500,000 profiles between Valentines Day and Easter this year--WOW!

This figure got me to wondering how many people have so far been alive on Earth--potential WikiTree profilees--and I found this interesting article on the subject from the Population Reference Bureau:

https://www.prb.org/howmanypeoplehaveeverlivedonearth/

This estimates there have been about 108 billion people living on Earth so far, with about 14 times more people now dead than currently alive. And these are just estimates--since the figures start in these estimates in the year 50,000 which may not be accurate. But it's certainly interesting!

Now I wonder how it would affect the study if they put the "2" in say 6,000 B.C..?

Just to show the other side.
We put sources on our profiles. So although there is an estimate of 68 billion people born by 1650, I'm guessing over 99.9% won't have any documentary evidence.

Still there are plenty to go at in the available censuses and BMD records. Perhaps when we have more wiki genealogists, we could do a big project on a census and adopt some families each and document them with their known lives. In 1850 there were under 24 million people in the US. In 1851 there were just under 18 million people in the UK. I don't know how many of us have roots in those areas, but it may be about 140 ancestors in that time per genealogist at the moment.

I think an interesting figure to watch will be the proportion of profiles in the global tree. As our older ancestors become more and more documented it will be increasingly hard for a new genealogist not to bump into the global tree somewhere as they document more than a few generations back.

Wikitree: Over 17 million served and only billions of more profiles to make. Get to work on those Joe Jones and Samantha Smiths, people!

Congrats, Wikitree!

Smith-36646 is supposed to be the same as

https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LZZY-WMW?1=1&spouse=LDFQ-H18 with 3 wives and 26 children. Obviously there ARE errors.

Is that SMITH enough? LOL
Is it wrong that I want to set that tree on fire? Cleansing fire. ALL OF THE FIRE!
Unfortunately burning that tree would tend to wipe out millions of innocent people. LOL So, I'd guess wrong??????
Suddenly seeing millions of people fading out in pictures like in Back to the Future....

Surgery would be best, I guess. LOL
Once something starts to burn it is often difficult to put it out. What if you burn the whole tree? No Humans on Earth. Or what if you catch YOUR branch on fire? You light the branch on fire, it burns, you vanish, nobody was there to light the branch, you re-appear. Repeat forever??? LOL Like Groundhog Day.

Or commit suicide by going back in time and killing your grandfather on your father's side. And then when you are still alive you find Gramma cheated? OOPS. LOL
Great Scott....

Well, it could be worse.  Go back in time and be your own grandpa. Happened in Futurama.
Rather like a Bishop's Mitre , Chris - but I would have a large watering can and a big bag of animal dung to blend into the roots of mine - - - ja
Sure. With the right ingredients a tree will flourish. Just gotta make sure the dung doesn't spread. Know what I mean? =)
